someday Ilya will reframe it like itâs a knee injury that never really goes away and canât be operated on that is a constant sort of worry and Shane will understand. oh! like a hockey injury but for the brain! but you can still play hockey if you manage it, unlike a concussion. I have to assume heâs somewhat familiar with what is possible to happen with a bad concussion that takes a player off the ice and maybe cte if itâs framed like that Shaneâs going to be trying to drag him up to say 10 sets of 4 nice things about himself in the mirror every day like physical therapy. wow itâs like unphysical therapy or something.
obvs i donât think theyâre like hopeless doomed to agony that would be. well ok that would still be my thing but thatâs not what i think in this case. but i DO think shane loves to decide what reality is and then just like hammer the world into that shape. so ilyaâs being like âno listen. i am asking you: if this ever actually is worst case scenario, if someday treatment fails, if this is terminal, do you still want this?â and shane (mr. if i do not acknowledge uncomfortable truths they cannot hurt me) is like âbabe we got this we can totally win this thingâ and ilyaâs like âokay at this point iâm not sure you understand what a hypothetical isâ
because itâs not like i donât think shane understands mental illness like heâs not stupid or even particularly emotionally stunted, he gets it. he could understand therapy or medication or whatever. but i just think shane doesnât have room in his belief system for âtrying really hard at something and doing everything you could literally possibly do then still losingâ because also if thatâs true then shaneâs whole life is a lie.
tldr: I'm gonna be hella picky with threads, if I reply at all, for the next little while bc depression is depressioning hard
so I haven't been doing well. I'm really not in a good place and, as of last night, I'm finally admitting that to myself. I'm trying to get in touch with my doctor about a med change, but that honestly might not be until the end of July. until then, and until I find something that works and my mood stabilizes, idk how much or what all I'll be getting done here and in just general. I'm struggling, and things are not bringing me joy, but I don't want to just drop everything because of it. I'm hopeful that I'll get muse again for most things once I'm feeling better, but until then, I'm most likely going to focus just on a few specific threads. you can still reply to stuff, I'd still love to see it, I just can't promise the same in return right now.
if you're not okay with the wait, I understand and wish you the best. soft block me if you need to, do what's best for you and all that. but I do hope to see you all on the other side of this.
I'm still always around to talk ooc, if you ever want to chat about whatever, I just might be quiet sometimes.
don't worry about me though. I have a good support system, both here and irl, and I'm not thinking dangerous thoughts. I'm not okay right now, but I will be eventually, and I can't wait to get back into the swing of things once I am.
thank you for reading this and for being a part of my life, whether we're old friends or new mutuals. <3
New year, same bullshit. Iâm sorry Iâve been so MIA, friends, but I hope you accept this drabble as an explanation of sorts. Love you all â¤ď¸
âShould I be worried?â
Grantaireâs eyes flicker up to Enjolrasâs, his cereal spoon halfway to his mouth. âDo you mean, like, in general?â he asks. âBecause I mean, like, itâs 2025. And weâre all fucked. So.â
He sticks his spoon in his mouth and shrugs. Enjolras doesnât smile. âThatâs on me for not being more specific, I guess,â he says, scrubbing a hand across his mouth before crossing his arms in front of his chest. âYouâre not painting.â
Grantaire swallows. âWell, no,â he allows, âmainly because Iâm eating breakfast at the moment.â
âBe serious.â
Grantaireâs lips twitch. âItâs somewhat less funny when you know itâs coming.â
Enjolras arches an eyebrow. âAnd yet thatâs never stopped you before.â
âFair.â Grantaire twirls his spoon between his fingers before pronouncing, like the well-worn, inside joke it had become, âI am wild.â
Almost certainly despite himself, Enjolras smiles, just slightly. âYeah, you are,â he agrees. âBut youâre also not painting.â
Grantaireâs answering smile fades. âCould be,â he says, a little sullenly. âItâs not like youâre around enough to know.â
Itâs a low blow and he knows it, but Enjolras doesnât flinch. âMaybe not but we live in a late capitalist surveillance state so I have my ways of finding out.â
âWell, well, well, typical white man, complaining about the system except for when it directly benefits you.â
âYep,â Enjolras says. âAre you going to keep deflecting? Because I can do this all day.â
For a moment, Grantaireâs tempted to take him up on it, to see just how long heâll actually allow this to drag on. Itâd almost certainly be good fun, and it isnât like Grantaireâs got anything better to do.
But he can also see that Enjolras is genuinely worried, can see it in the tightness of his shoulders and the lines at the corners of his eyes that he tries to claim arenât crowâs feet because heâs not old enough to have crowâs feet. And considering Grantaireâs previous point about all of the other things that are almost certainly more worth Enjolrasâs worry, he supposes he owes him at least a semblance of the truth.
âYes, I havenât been painting,â he says, dipping his spoon in his bowl of cereal and stirring it, mostly to give himself something to do with his hands. âNo, you shouldnât be worried.â
Enjolras nods like he didnât really expect a different answer. âAre you depressed again?â
Enjolrasâs bluntness, characteristic though it may be, still startles a laugh from Grantaire. He sighs and looks down at his cereal bowl. âThereâs not really a way to say this that wonât worry you.â
When he sneaks a glance at him, Enjolras meets his eyes evenly. âTry me.â
Grantaire jerks a shrug. âIâve never really not been depressed,â he admits, which isnât really a dirty secret so heâs not entirely sure why heâs saying it like it is.
Maybe because he really doesnât want Enjolras to worry. They donât talk about this, really, other than for Enjolras to reiterate more times than Grantaire can count that heâs always there to listen if ever Grantaire wants or needs to talk.
He knows that Grantaireâs in therapy, and takes meds, and had some very low lows previously, but Grantaireâs never felt the need to fill him in on the specifics.
It was depressing enough living it the first time.
He made that joke, such as it was, to his therapist, who didnât laugh. âDo you frequently feel like youâre a burden to your loved ones?â she asked in response.
Of course Grantaire does, but again, he wonât tell Enjolras that.
Enjolras taps his fingers on the table, the way he does when heâs deciding on the best plan of attack or how to most effectively dismantle whatever asinine argument Grantaireâs brought up. âI thought you were doing better,â he says hesitantly after a moment.
He doesnât pitch it as a question but Grantaire still nods. âI was.â
âWhat happened?â Enjolras asks, before pausing and asking, âDid something happen?â
Grantaire sighs and crosses his arms in front of his chest. âIt doesnât always work that way,â he says. âItâs not always triggered by something happening.â
Enjolrasâs brow furrows. âRight,â he says shortly, something like disappointment flitting across his expression.
It took Grantaire a very long time when they got together to realize that this kind of disappointment isnât aimed at him, but at a problem Enjolras canât fix, an enemy he canât fight.
At least, not directly.
He clears his throat. âBut in this case, I think probably everything over the past few months played at least a contributory role, shall we say.â
True though it is, he mostly says it for Enjolrasâs sake. Enjolras just nods slowly. âAre you not painting because your depression is bad again?â
Grantaire exhales sharply. âIâve painted a lot while depressed.â
Grantaire barks a laugh and scrubs both hands across his face. âYou know me too fucking well.â
âOr just well enough.â
Grantaire lowers his hands and sighs again. He doesnât quite meet Enjolrasâs eyes as he says, âEvery time I go try to paintâŚitâs like I canât see it anymore, you know?â Enjolras almost certainly doesnât know, but heâs struggling to put it into words in a way he can understand. âLike I canât picture it in my mind, how I want it to look, or how to get there. Itâsâ itâs like trying to paint in fog.â
Itâs not an exact metaphor, but itâll do.
Enjolras nods slowly. âBut I donât need to be worried.â
âNo,â Grantaire says, before wrinkling his nose. âYes? I never know what the correct response is.â Enjolras just gives him a look, and Grantaire tells him, âNo, you donât need to be worried.â He pauses, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth before telling Enjolras with an almost tired conviction, âItâll come back. It always has.â
âAnd if it doesnât?â Enjolras asks.
Grantaire cracks a smile. âThen you can worry.â
Enjolras takes a deep breath. âOk,â he says simply.
Grantaire eyes him resignedly. âYouâre going to worry anyway, arenât you?â
A smile twitches at the corners of Enjolrasâs mouth. âNewsflash, asshole, Iâve been worried this whole time,â he says dryly, and Grantaireâs smile widens at the quote.
âIâm sorry,â he says, and Enjolrasâs smile disappears.
âWhat? Why?â
Grantaire shakes his head, mostly because he knows Enjolras wonât like his explanation. âBecause you shouldnât have toââ
Sure enough, Enjolras cuts him off with a scowl, though his voice is gentle as he tells him, âThat ship Iâm pretty sure sailed when I fell in love with you. Or, frankly, probably a good deal sooner than that.â
There are so many things that Grantaire wants to say that, but he canât bring himself to. Instead, he stretches his hand across the table and tells Enjolras, sincerely, âI love you.â
Enjolras takes his hand, lacing their fingers together. âI know,â he says softly. âI love you, too.â He squeezes Grantaireâs hand before adding, âI hope it comes back soon.â

request: How can I foreshadow or hint that my character has severe depression? I want to make the reveal a big deal when it happens and catch readers off guard
Feel free to use and reblog!
having other characters associate the person's mood with their character traits ("they're always grumpy")
masking their depression really well but being absolutely drained and a lot worse as soon as they're alone
appearing as a 'neutral' person, when their neutral mood actually indicates the emptiness they feel inside
their growing passivity makes them fade into the background
the more excited other people get the more downcast the person becomes (they get perceived as a killjoy)
they don't accept invitations anymore
they always say they're busy but can't answer the question what exactly they're doing
they show no emotional reaction in a fight
everyone says about the person that they have such a hard shell
they usually have been very caring and sensitive to everyone around them but suddenly they seem like they couldn't care less

honestly it ticks me off that my burnout month has been july for, what, the past 3 years? like, my first year of artfight i did so many attacks and it was so much fun. and then i struggled so hard the next couple of years until this year, where i've done a single revenge and can't bring myself to do anything more than that.
i thought i'd be okay this year because june was also a burnout month for me, like i'd get over it by now, right? wrong! i'm gonna have to put my comic on hiatus soon because i'm running out of buffer pages. i've been working on a single page for two months.
it makes me so mad. i sit around and do nothing for hours and feel incredibly bored the whole time, but i can't do anything. i have 3? 4? outstanding commissions and i just can't bring myself to work on them. UGH. i'm the worst.
like i understand what's going on. i tapered off abilify in may and started taking latuda instead, which turned on the creativity drive for a bit (which is why i drew 14 pages of a comic in a few weeks, when i'd been in a creative slump basically since i started taking it) but also turned off my ability to not be horribly depressed. and sure, we added wellbutrin to the mix, but that hasn't done much to help anything either. right now i'm in this sort of in between state where we figure out dosages and if the meds are helping or not and what to change them to if not.
i will also say, there's a lot of Stuff going on too. my house has got some issues, there are money issues, my dad got his foot amputated, and i know my sister is struggling too. i keep worrying that the cats are going to die, since we lost three cats to cancer in the span of one year not that long ago, but they're fine and healthy, for the most part.
anyway, i can't be on abilify again because it made me suddenly gain 30 lbs and get diabetes, which is more dangerous than depression (looks at my dad who keeps having to get more and more of his feet removed with each passing year). thankfully, though, treating the diabetes aggressively and going off the abilify saw me lose the 30 lbs again and not be diabetic anymore. which is great and all, but it did help with the depression, even if it made me stagnate creatively.
at any rate, i'm not wholly sure the latuda and/or the wellbutrin aren't doing the same thing to my creative drive. but that might be the depression too. who knows!
