Particularly obsessed with the fact that he bothered to incorporate the book’s infamously long, dry, rambling ruminations on things like whale anatomy, which are my most beloved chapters, they’re so weird and interesting and good, and managed to do so in a way that reviewers described as shockingly entertaining and innovative.

And immensely over the moon to have discovered that he filled it so chock-full with authentic folk songs and sea shanties (including “Lady Franklin’s Lament”! boy was making Terror allusions years in advance) that it’s been described as a “sing-along” or “almost a musical,” cause I love musicals, and EVERYTHING should contain more sea shanties.

Where did you find find them singing? I would love to hear them!

A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.

B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I’m in the right mood.

C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead.

D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won’t necessarily put me off reading something.
