First, in the past four years, Dazai had left WITHOUT telling a single word to Chuuya. That alone changes everything what “celebration” even means. that night, Chuuya was really worried. Asagiri spelled it out that Dazai hasn’t been found. CHUUYA WAS LOOKING FOR HIM, he literally SEARCHED for him until he was certain that Dazai was dead because of his suicidal tendencies.

Remember when Chuuya didn't know Dazai was the one who blew up his car? normally he would immediately think that it was Dazai, but because he thought he had gone away, he didn't suspect him. He just thought about his “death” and that's what Chuuya thought he wanted, and says he’d celebrated it.

But BONES hadn’t animated his somber expression, which parallels Dazai’s own expression during his farewell and Asagiri has also confirmed uncertainty about whether Chuuya was truly a vampire btw.

Chuuya does call Dazai when drunk, and deseperatly wants him to pick up. So if he was that sick of him and went to drink for celebration, then he probably still tried to call Dazai and wanted him to pick up the call that night, huh? And Chuuya probably only calls dazai his ex-partner not because he’s a traitor but bc he thought he’s dead. dazai is also mentioned being his "ex best friend" :)

Plus, Dazai talks about knowing Chuuya for seven years (they’ve only been partners for 3 years). and out of all the things Chuuya complains about (like how Dazai calls him short, or the constant annoyance). so how did Chuuya celebrate how great it was to not be dazai’s partener anymore when he never rejects the framing of still being called Dazai’s partner and knowing each-others for seven years???

chuuya's inner monologue: "wtf since when does this idiot have glasses? how did that happen? why does he look kinda ho- NO! but why is he so cu- STOP RIGHT THERE!" *gay panics*

they’re not together, but they remain partners even after he left the mafia

a quick reminder, dazai and chuuya were partners in the mafia for 3 YEARS, and apart for 4 years. and even though they’ve spent more time separated, they still consider each other partners

partnership is one of the main themes in bsd. in dazai’s understanding, partnership means knowing evrythng abt your partner, down to the smallest details. he openly says he knows all of chuuya’s habits like the back of his hand, and even knows his breathing patterns. isn’t that insane???

even after 4 years, dazai still recognizes chuuya as his partner and he still calls him that and note that there is nothing around them in this frame. it’s a moment just for the two of them

and i reeeally love fyodor’s line. he devalues soukoku as partners, but in doing so, paradoxically highlights what makes them special (since he ultimately turned out to be wrong)

only they truly know each other and accept each other as they are. that’s a very important part of their relationship. even if they present it as “hate”
