Ok, ok.

I passed my boards and I got hired as an intern. 

Sounds more like maybe shine some sunlight through those clouds.

Well if you pretend you don’t know me, I’ll probably still talk to you.

That’s what I’m trying to tell you. I’m already having a good day. 

You’re too cutthroat for it not to be.

I’ve been good. The kids are all on track, we’ve got a functional system now. I’d say we’re on the uphill climb.

That is one of the things I have going for me. Finally, one of my negative traits being a positive. 

Every city, every town, has its problems. I believe in this city, or more, I believe in its people. Especially at the local level, there’s so much going on here that matters. I want to make sure the good work that’s already happening keeps going and gets amplified.

And why would we have to do that?

Woah there, no need to break out the campaign speech on me. You’re going to rain on my parade.

Of course. We’re excited to have you. Your sister and the professors we spoke to spoke very highly of you.

We’ll assign you to assist several partners and junior partners so you can get a taste of the different type of cases and attorney styles, but if there’s anything you take a particular liking to, just give me a holler.

My sister did, I’m not surprised but it’s still weird to hear, we used to butt heads a lot in our teenager years. You know how teenage girls get. I’m glad we grew out of it and can work in the same place now. 

How are you settling in?

I’m settling in great. Thanks for being so accommodating, I feel at home and comfortable. 

No, but it’s good not to be overconfident.

And I do work and live in this area so, come around enough times and you’ll see me plenty.

I don’t know why you even want to run for office for this city, it’s a mess. I would just give up and go someplace better if I was you. 

These polls are…..something.

Getting nervous, Prince? 

I’m gonna give it my all.

The wedding at least will be pretty cheap. I found a dress, we’re just gonna go to the courthouse in the afternoon and then go out to dinner. I’ve already called our aunt and uncle.

I see, well in that case.. what color dress should I wear? 

I know it’s fast, but it feels right.

And if it all blows up…. I know a good divorce lawyer. Several, actually.

As long as you’re happy, I guess. 

Ok, this conversation went…..somewhere.

Not everyone wants to just get in your pants, Vanessa. Some of us actually like the opportunity to get to know you…again. So I’ll see you around, maybe. You have a good night.

Because of all the regular reasons people get married.

But also because I’m pregnant.

I’m getting married. To Nate. On Saturday.

You have no idea? I didn’t take you to be one to sell yourself short. I like you, Vanessa. Always have. I wasn’t happy with how we drifted apart, and it seems life’s provided the opportunity to reconnect.

Unless you “guess” you’re good with not doing that.

You don’t know me know though. You just want to sleep with me and you’re using your past memories of me to justify it. Or maybe what you said is true, at the end of the day, I don’t think I’m wrong.
