III. Background
Hector Dominguez arrived in this world as something of a surprise, born to a mother and a father who still felt too young and too unprepared to welcome him. The couple was hurriedly married by their respective families (which were already longtime friends and thus perhaps more amenable to what was happening). And while the apartment into which they moved to start their new lives was cramped, there was, nevertheless, expansive and genuine familial warmth on which to lay a foundation.
Hector grew up in his grandmotherâs restaurant, a small but popular establishment in Queens, surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins, constantly coming and going. He himself took on responsibilities in the business from a young age, taking orders in both English and Spanish over the phone or doing nearby deliveries via bike. Â
Still, the jobs to be done only seemed to multiply as he got older. His parents had two more children, each an attempt to preserve a rocky marriage, and his grandmother started to wind down as the years went by. By the time Hector was a teenager, there were days were he was playing waiter, busboy, and chef on his own,Â
For this reason, he rebelled in high school, grades declining as he fell in with a crowd of troublemakers. While he was never quite the ringleader, he did not stop the others from bullying smaller classmates, and he earned some popularity for having a place from which to easily steal food and alcohol. Hector fought often with his father at this time, and even now, he blames the man for the divorce which soon came, although it was perhaps long overdue.
Hector graduated with few prospects, his former friends all going their separate ways, and returned to work in the restaurant. With his dadâs absence, the rest of the family rallied around him, his mother, and his brother and sister. And for the first time, Hector discovered some proper inner confidence. He could run the place and run it well, while still figuring out how to lead a proper life outside it. Thus, for the next few years, he blossomed into himself until old debts, bad bookkeeping, and rising rent closed the business down in an expected but still devastating blow.Â
Still living at home, Hector bounced from job to job: retail, warehouse work, and restaurants. A girlfriend found herself pregnant, and while they agreed to co-parent, Hector would not hurry like his own mother and father did into a marriage doomed to fail.
An older co-worker mentioned to Hector that the MTA was offering the Train Operator Exam that year, and together, the pair of them prepared and drilled material for hours, allured by the promise of a âdamn good salaryâ and benefits. This man became an unlikely best friend, and Hector made him his sonâs godfather when the boy was born.
Maybe even to his own surprise, Hector passed the test, and six months later, was traveling to Brooklyn for processing and training. He was working the late subway runs in early 2022, commuting between the boroughs in the early hours of the morning. When he stopped his out-of-service train in a lonely stretch of tunnel to await entry into the depot, he was lured, against his better judgement, out of the car by a voice crying out.
In the dark, Hector was attacked by a rabid vampire who had been hiding in the subway system, dazed by tainted blood. However, because the vampire was, by then, a few days starved, Hector was able to put up a genuine fight using his flashlight.Â
The fact that he was able to draw blood, though, his assailant's healing capabilities hampered by weakness, allowed Hector to be turned. His own wounds, to which he succumbed a few minutes later, were infected in the scuffle, and he awoke changed.
It has only been three weeks since that day, and by now, Hector is known to the clan, although he has not yet formally joined. He is not adjusting well to vampiric life, but his mysterious sire is still in the city, driving an urge for revenge.Â
IV: Possible Connections
Hector is open to any and all plots and connections, but below are some potential ideas to kick off brainstorming.
The Mentor: Hector is overwhelmed right now not only by what he has become, but by the curtain having been lifted on the supernatural world. This person will help him navigate his way through this cataclysm.
The Old Friend: This person knew Hector before he turned, and now, he finds he has to face them again. Have they always been non-human? How do they feel about his circumstances now?Â
The Old Flame: Maybe a one night stand, maybe a short-lived romance, maybe the one that got away. Hector has had his share of relationships across New York City.
The Customer: A holdover from better days. Maybe they ate in Hectorâs family restaurant, or maybe he delivered food to their place on the regular. How does one bridge the gap between the past and the future?
The Spectator: Hector went a little overboard and got physical at a bar when he could no longer suppress his hunger for the first time. That incident brought him to the clanâs attention, and this person may have been present for it. What did they do? How did they react?
