Wikipedia is a donated misinfo source of internet btw. I'm not also defending ai, but you cannot trust Wikipedia either ESPECIALLY when it comes to politics, anything that includes sensitive stuff. Do you know how much their moderators get paid to spread misinformation there?
Wikipedia is insanely important even if some topics on it are untrustworthy. It’s one of the largest and most publicly accessible sources of information ever. Even if you don’t trust the Wikipedia article itself there are strict guidelines about siting sources so you can use it to find more reliable sources, and if the guidelines aren’t met it will tell you. It’s obviously going to be less reliable about subjective topics like politics, but in terms of objective information it’s pretty damn useful. If you use it for math and science it’s incredibly useful.
Not to mention how much information you find on the internet is itself sourced from Wikipedia without giving credit.
Also it runs on donations because it’s a free resource that doesn’t make any money, similar in concept to Ao3. Which also runs on donations. Because it’s free. If Wikipedia didn’t run on donations it would either cost money to access or be privately funded. A lot of Wikipedia’s donations come from regular people who use it and believe it’s a resource that has value to society, and they’ve been struggling lately because of people spreading and believing misleading stories like this. If Wikipedia dies the greatest database of publicly accessible information does too. Killing Wikipedia would only benefit people who want to keep the masses ignorant.
I’m not saying you have to use it or trust it implicitly but at least recognize the immense value it holds in encouraging curiosity and learning.
