You can say that I did have a rebellious phase. I was real close and intimate with my parents until the end of my elementary school, so much so that I could confidently tell myself “There’s no way I’ll have a rebellious phase”. But as I neared the end of my 1st year in middle school, I started to ignore what parents tell me and even started to snap back at them.
I am extremely horrible at waking in the morning. I will always wake up 30 minutes earlier even though I’m very confident that I can get ready in 3 minutes. Time is very important to me so I don’t want to waste any bit of it when awake. My mother will always goes for my weak spots by saying things like “I won’t make breakfast for you” or “I won’t help you out with HKT48” as I try to stay under the sheets. Most of those are usually ignored but I’ll wake up after her 3rd blow. My father on the other hand, is always dealt with a “GET OUT!” when he tries to get me up.
There was a day I was working around the region, my mother messaged me on LINE saying “I love you so please come back to Fukuoka as soon as possible” and “I miss you”. But I was really stressed out that day and ignored her messages, only to come back to a spam of stamps once I checked. Agitated, I replied “What the hell Mama! Stop messaging me!” Then my father came into the conversation “What’s with that tone!” I couldn’t figure out how my father joined in but what I replied was “Don’t butt in! It’s not like you get it!”
I didn’t know what came over me. So as I slept alone at night wrapped under my blankets, I cried, reflecting on the actions that I did. Perhaps I just wanted them to know more about who I am and not treat me as a kid.
But between my parents, I would say that I’ve gotten more distant from my father.
After getting in HKT48, I moved over to Fukuoka with my mother and grandmother. My father stayed in Kumamoto. Every time he comes over to Fukuoka, he’ll ask me “How was your day Miku?” but for some reason I would be too shy to answer him so I’ll just ignore it and coop up in my room. Whenever I go to the countryside, he’ll send me messages like “Good morning” or “Do your best!” but all he sees is a “read” marker. I really do love my father but I just can’t say what I really feel.
When the first quake hit Kumamoto, my father was in Fukuoka. We felt a very strong wave and my father rushed over to hug my mother and I, sheltering us from any harm. “Are you both alright?” We’re almost always fighting with each other and I know that I’m a brat to him. But I was shocked and touched to find out that despite all those, he still cared for me dearly.
Come to think of it, he treasures my mother and I. Even after fights and spouting horrible words at him, he is the kind of person who will even hug me tightly saying “I’m so glad to have Miku as my kid” when we make up.
The night the second quake hit, I was in Tokyo. Worried, I phoned my father. “Hello, Dad? Are you okay?” “I’m alright dear. Thank you for your concern. Miku phoning me, it’s unbelievable.” My father sounded lively on the phone but I found out afterwards that a lot of our furniture in the house had been turned over.
My father was not the only person in Kumamoto, I have a lot of friends in Kumamoto too. The next few days were plagued with constant worrying. Watching the damage that my family and friends are engulfed in on the news pained me. There were so many in trouble. There is no guarantee that peace will last forever. I have to treasure the present, and treat everyone with kindness and love starting with my own parents.
I will be a high schooler come next year. I hope that I’ll be able to grow out of my rebellious phase before then. At least I’ve started to argue less with my parents lately. I want them to be happy and to see smiles on their faces.
The rebellious phase is a trying period for both the child and the parents. The child honestly loves the parents but finds it very hard to be true to it. As for the parents, they have gone through the phase themselves but once their children enter this phase, most are at a loss at what to do.
As for Tanaka Miku, who is nearing her end of her rebellion, and for children who are rebelling against their parents, the approach that parents should take is “to trust”.
Middle schoolers are stressed with the onslaught of their examinations and club activities. Tanaka Miku is too, juggling with both her activities as an idol and student. Parents pay close attention to their children out of concern and show their support as well, but it may just have a reverse effect on them. “I have my thoughts so I want you to respect and trust in me. There are days where I will be stretched thin but it would be gratifying if you were to leave me to my own.” But with that said, it’s not to be taken as that it’s better to leave them to fend for their own. “I am grateful for when you show me your consideration and love”
Through the Kumamoto earthquakes, Tanaka Miku learnt to look at relationships in a new angle after having worried for her father and friends for days. It was an opportunity for her to reflect on what she could do for others as an idol.
April 28th. During the shonichi stage performance held at their new operations center in the Nishitetsu Hall she said, “I believe that the only thing we are able to do at this moment is to help others smile again” At 14 years old, she has become an indispensable member in HKT48. Her goal this General Elections in June is to rank in the top 80. Based on the fans’ opinions, it’s very probable that it might just be possible.
