How are we liking the new Valyrian script?
High Valyrian
Valerian for cheers?
Maybe Biarver aōt!
And this is how we know how to say “Cheers!” In High Valyrian.
Hi, David! Just curious do you have the historical linguistics for Meereenese Valyrian by any chance.
I’m just going to copy and paste from my own grammar. Some of this is just reminder stuff to me; some of it is incomplete and I just know in my head what the rest of it is. Good luck!
Palatalization: h, s > sh, z > j, t > ch, d > dj, n > ny / _{i, y, e}
Many sounds become palatalized before front vowels.
Spirantization: p > f, t > th, ch > sh, k, q > kh, s > sh / V_V, _C[+stop], _#
Voiceless stops spontaneously spirantized in between vowels and before other non-identical stops (i.e. geminates remain) and at the end of a word.
Gliding: v > w, j > y, i > ye, u > wa / #_; oa, ua > wa; oe, ue > we
These fricatives became glides at the beginning of a word. Also, generally, v became w many places.
Lenition Chain: dh, gh, h > Ø; d > dh, dj > j, b > v, g > gh
A second round of lenition deleted a number of consonants present in Astapori Valyrian. (Though dh and gh were not deleted at the beginning of a word.)
Nasal Degradation: n, m > ng / _#
Occurred in all paradigms.
Degemination (Mutation): nn > ny, ll > ly, vv > w, zz > r
Ubiquitous sound change.
Degemination (Other): CC > C
Ubiquitous sound change.
Devoicing: C > [-voice] / #_, _#
Radical devoicing affected the edges of words.
Vowel Loss: V > Ø / C[+fric]_C[-cont], C[+obs]_C[+glide], _#; y > i
This will include nasals and liquids. Single syllable words were left in tact (i.e. their vowels will not be deleted). (Note: Where complex clusters would be left, the vowel instead reduced to schwa.)
Lateralization/Rhoticization: r > l / _#, l > r / #_
Ubiquitous sound change.
Vowel Lowering: u > o; i, y > e; o, e, a > ǝ / _#
Affects those remaining vowels.
Some historical linguistics for Meereenese Valyrian.

In proper classical High Valyrian the vowel «y» was probably pronounced like the u in French ‘lune’. However, many modern speakers just pronounce it like «i», as in the ‘ee’ of English “meet”.
Rytsas arlī! Hope all is fine I havea question would I be able to say gūrēnilaksir mēre to mean lesson 1
Nah, I’d say Gūrēnilaksir Ēlior.
Hello! Out of curiosity, how would one say 'kingslayer' in High Valyrian? Thanks!
Probably dāroti sentys.
What would be some phrases to introduce oneself in High Valyrian? I'm big fan of your work. Thank you.
You could always say Rytsas! ____ iksan. Very direct. I like that for High Valyrian.
Also featured in the Duolingo course, literally: Greetings! I’m ____.
Always a classic.
Hey, David! I just wanted to know, is it possible for you to share the phonology of the Skroth language? Thanks!
Here you go:
The Valyrian language and the language of the Dothraki are not the only ones David Peterson worked on. A look at a less well-known one: Skroth’s phonology.

Reblog and follow if you are studying the Duolingo Valyrian course!
For some silly reason I decided it would be fun to learn high valyrian on duolingo and I’m finding it quite challenging. See its not like Spanish (the only language besides English with which I have any experience) where words are either male or female, and the female versions of things are basically the same as the male versions (as far as actual gendered words like boy and girl or adjectives describing gendered words) but with an A on the end. Nope. Not at all. Actually it kind of reminds me of English in the sense that our words aren’t gendered like that. Nevertheless, I won’t abandon my lessons. I already spend all my spare time in fictional worlds, I might as well speak a fictional language ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Defintiely not gendered like Spanish. High Valyrian does have grammatical gender, but it does not correlate to masculine and feminine, but rather something else. The genders in High Valyrian are four: solar, lunar, terrestrial and aquatic. For instance, ‘man’ is of the lunar gender, but doesn’t stop it from meaning ‘man’. In fact, both the words for ‘man’, vala, and ‘woman’, ābra, are of the same gender, lunar.

Dear David! How would we say 'fire resistant' in High Valyrian?
Probably perzo bē ȳgha. It’s not going to be one word.
A good thing to have in mind when dragons are a possibility!
How would you suggest creating big declension systems akin to that of High Valyrian in a way which looks naturalistic? Also, what are some ways to create adjective-noun agreement with gender? I also have a question on how the gender endings present in High Valyrian evolved.
I did a video on this here. I hope that was useful enough!
