“The Brick House was one of the toughest joints I ever played in … Guys would drink and fight one another like circle saws. Bottles would come flying over the bandstand like crazy and there was lots of plain common shooting and cutting. But somehow all that jive didn’t faze me at all. The Specials helped transform ska from a Jamaican dance rhythm into the urgent soundtrack of late-1970s Britain. Mixing sharp suits, punk energy and socially observant lyrics, they gave voice to a country troubled by unemployment, racism and urban decline. Their 2 Tone movement also brought Black and white musicians together onstage, making racial unity part of the band’s image as well as its politics. Their influence can still be heard in British indie, punk, reggae and protest music, wherever wit, rhythm and social conscience meet.
