Notes on: radical aloneness
Last fall, I presented a paper on relationship anarchy. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term (or concept), it can loosely be understood as a style of interpersonal relationships that doesnât prioritize or hierarchialize relationships with others based on what takes place within them, at least a priori. In short, thereâs a uniqueness to each relationship which makes their translation between relationships difficult to gatherââa kind of ineffability that gets lost or violated in the transition. So, for example, you may relate with someone in a way that tends to be more like friendship: perhaps you sometimes get together for coffee, talk about things that are going on with your life, go for walks, make dinner together sometimes, etcââbut, sometimes you mess around, not too often, but sometimes. Then, you may have another relationship that is a bit more weightyââfor one reason or another itâs got a trajectory that shoots out into the future, a place where you may see yourself growing vegetables and living together, sharing projects, intertwining intricately. And then, just to have more than two examples, you may have a friend that is more traditionally just a friend: you watch hockey together, talk about books youâve been reading, get a drink, whatever. Thereâs a complex calculus taking place in all of these relationships, a shifting definition, murky waters, not only interrelationship but intrarelationship, as wellââjust because you fucked around last time doesnât mean itâll definitely happen this time, just because you didnât hold one another last time doesnât mean you wonât this time, etc.Â
The point being is that, out of the gate, you canât prioritize based on the activities that go on within the relationshipââthe only thing that can be said is that the relationships differ. Now, in lived experience, you may want to spend more time with the person who you see yourself growing vegetables with (this is one of the miserable aporias of existence: love seems infinite, but time isnâtâŚ) but this isnât because you have sex or because you donât have sex, it isnât because theyâre âmore than a friendâ or whatever coarse terminology is hoisted upon itââitâs because thatâs the way that relationship goes, its particular modeââyou require more time with them for one reason or another: they ignite you, they unravel you beautifully, they support you unflinchingly, they catalyze splendid complexity and nuance. After I presented this paper, I spent some time with one of my former professors, a vibrant and shimmering man with a long philosophical history, but more importantly an insatiable thirst for life, gaiety, and joyââhis continuing project being resolutely existential and affirmative. As we rode the bus late at night, he said to me something to the effect of: I absolutely loved your paper, why would we ever want people to be with us who donât want to be with us? Why would we ever want to exercise power and control over loved ones, for that negates or corrodes love, rots it constitutionally. And then, in passing, right before I got on the bus I was transferring to without him, he said something to the effect of: what you need to be able to do relationship anarchy well is an incredible amount of radical aloneness. At the time, this comment slid right off me, it didnât stick for an instant longer than hearing it and offering a surface response without thinking, âYeah, youâre right, I think.â What does radical aloneness mean, anyway. To me, itâs some sort of commitment to your shit, what youâve got going on, a wellness and health that supports engagements with others, comes to the rescue when you want to lash out and heave at others, take people down because of your own insecurities. One who has cultivated an abundant radical aloneness can let the other be because theyâve got their own projects and projections, their own vital flow. If the one they love wants to be with others for whatever reason, they can be upset and bothered, even jealous of course, but on the whole everything is okay, for they are fecundity. You only know you havenât cultivated radical aloneness when itâs too late, when you need it, unfortunately. Radical aloneness shouldnât be equated with the singular or the individual eitherââsometimes radical aloneness means that you have fostered relationships with others that support you and supplement you. Other times radical aloneness means being actually alone, but alone is of course always populated by others as well, even if youâre alone in space at a given time. Events of late have lead to reflect upon the ways that I create, sustain, and tend to my sense of radical aloneness. I think that, in other circles, this would be taken up as self-care, but this is unfortunate, I think. Radical aloneness can encompass what is broadly construed as self-care, sure, but sometimes radical aloneness means fleeing the self, evacuating the selfâs rigid postures and habits, and setting out on unforeseen trailsââinstead of watching over the self, dismantling the self, letting the light shine in, opening up a window, cracking things up a bit. Maybe Iâm being too fine with distinctions, but I think thereâs a difference. Beyond that, I think that radical aloneness is the wellspring of being with others confidently and creatively: it is from this shimmering becoming that we can glow with others, connect with others in productive and dazzling ways. Radical aloneness as generative and combinatorial, experimental and stochastic, seeking to build and proliferate. Sometimes self-care is necessary to do this: sometimes you just need someone to make you an avocado sandwich, but an avocado sandwich isnât going to propel you into radiance, just get you into the position where you can once again have the opportunity to luxuriate. Maybe in subsequent posts I can explore the ways in which I cultivate this radical aloneness, or perhaps the times when it would have been immensely useful to have access to.Â
Game of Thrones â Rewatch & Summary
Season 1, Episode 02: The Kingsroad
Okay, before I get into this episode, hereâs a map. It helps if youâve got an idea where some of these places are. The major locations in the last episode were Winterfell (up north, above the wolf), the Wall (even further north, the border between the gray and the white), and Pentos, which is on this map because no one cares about anything east of the Narrow Sea.
So we open up this episode with Jorah telling a whiny Danaerys about her husbandâs culture, mostly to pacify her because her ass hurts from riding on horseback all the time. Oh, and we find out through a gross conversation with Viserys that Jorah was exiled from Westeros by Ned Stark because he sold some poachers into slavery. Honestly, Danaerysâ whole storyline is boring af until the latest seasons, with a few highlights for dragons.
Back in Winterfell! Tyrion slaps his insensitive nephew, and it is GLORIOUS! Here, have a gif.
Oh, and that guy behind the prince is THE HOUND. His real name is Sandor Clegane, but everyone calls him the Hound because heâs ugly and brutal.
Then we get an interesting breakfast with the Lannisters where Cersei and Jaime learn that Bran might survive his injuries, and Tyrion makes it super awkwardly obvious that he knows exactly what happened. (Oh, and weâre also introduced to MYRCELLA BARATHEON and TOMMEN BARATHEON, the younger princess and prince, but theyâre not important until way later.)
Cersei visits Catelyn and coma-induced Bran to offer sympathies and somehow manages to make it about herself!
The Starks are getting ready to part ways! The girls, Sansa and Arya, are going down to KINGâS LANDING (the capital) with Ned and Jonâs headed to the Wall to join the Nightâs Watch. Jon gives Arya a little sword she calls Needle as a farewell present. Thereâs some tension when Jon goes to say bye to Bran while Catelyn is by his bedside. Robb and Jon hug at the gate before Jon leaves!
Ned bids good-bye to Jon, and tells him that heâs a Stark by blood, even if not by name, and ITâS BEAUTIFUL OK. Jon asks his father about his mother, and Ned promises heâll finally tell him about her the next time they see each other.
On the Kingsroad, Ned and Robert talk about the good olâ days, but then they get into a fight when Robert proposes sending an assassin after Danaerys. Heâs got some wicked hate for all Targaryens because they killed the woman he loved (Nedâs sister Lyanna), and he insists Ned should hate them, too, for what they did to her and to his father and brother, but Ned wonât condone killing a child. This is gonna be an ongoing issue.
Tyrionâs going up to the Wall with Jon and Benjen because he just wants to see it, and he starts to pull the wool off Jonâs eyes about the Nightâs Watch. Itâs a form of punishment in the Kingdoms, so thereâs a lot of criminals up there that Jon now has to consider âbrothers.â
Back in Winterfell, Maester Luwin (heâs like their doctor and scribe combined) comes in to Branâs room to talk to Catelyn about running Winterfell while Nedâs gone, but she gets pissed, and Robb steps in to take over those responsibilities himself. As Robb starts scolding his mother for not taking care of the youngest Rickon, he sees a fire in one of the towers and goes off to help put it out. It turns out to be a distraction, though, because an assassin tries to kill Bran! Catelyn tries to stop him, but itâs Branâs pet direwolf that actually breaks down the door and rips out the guyâs throat. GOOD BOY!
Catelyn goes back to the âscene of the crimeâ to try to figure out how Bran fell and why tf someone would wanna assassinate a 10-year-old, and she finds a blonde hair in the tower he was pushed from. She conveys her suspicions to the maester and head guard and Robb and Theon, and they decide they have to tell Ned. She doesnât trust a raven with the news, so she and the head guard (Ser Rodrik) decide to go to Kingâs Landing themselves.
Danaerysâ scenes in this episode really just have to do with her learning how to fuck her husband so that she actually enjoys it.
Joffrey and Arya get into a fight. Aryaâs wolf, Nymeria, takes a bite out of Joffreyâs arm to protect her, and heâs nasty with Sansa when she tries to help. Arya tells Nymeria to run away because theyâll kill her for that.
When they find Arya, sheâs held before the king and queen to decide what to do for her âoffense.â After some he-said-she-said bull crap, the king decides that children should be disciplined by their parents, but the queen demands that a direwolf die for the crime. Since Nymeria is gone, Sansaâs wolf, Lady, is executed. Ned does it himself and sends her body back north where she belongs. Sansa is devastated, and combined with her lying in Joffreyâs favor, this will drive a deeper wedge between Sansa and Arya.
These episodes have the most cheerful endings, right? But hey, Bran woke up at the very end!
Game of Thrones -- Rewatch & Summary
Season 1, Episode 01: Winter is Coming
Alright, the episode opens up with an introduction to WHITE WALKERS (fuckinâ ice zombies) and the NIGHTâS WATCH (poor bastards sworn to protect the Seven Kingdoms from ice zombies). Three Nightâs Watchmen go up north of THE WALL (700 ft of ICE thatâs supposed to keep zombies out (yeah, Trump totally stole this idea)) and get attacked by zombies, but only one of them lives.
Then he gets caught by some guards of WINTERFELL, and weâre introduced to a fuck ton of characters at once.
EDDARDÂ âNEDâ STARKÂ -- Lord of Winterfell and the guy in charge of most of the people in the northern region of Westeros (thatâs the name of the continent). Heâs kind of our main character in season one.
CATELYN STARKÂ -- Nedâs wife and the mother of his five legitimate children. Sheâs a good mom and wife, sweet but firm and very level-headed.
ROBB STARKÂ -- The eldest Stark child, and the heir.
JON SNOWÂ -- Nedâs bastard. Heâs well kept and fed like nobility, but he canât hold titles or anything like that. Catelyn hates him.
THEON GREYJOYÂ -- Nedâs ward.
SANSA STARKÂ -- The eldest daughter, second eldest child. Good at needlework, very ladylike.
ARYA STARKÂ -- The second daughter, whoâs better at archery than her little brother and hates needlework.
BRAN STARKÂ -- The second son, who is ten and bad at archery. Good at climbing castle walls, though.
RICKON STARKÂ -- The youngest child, who is like seven and bad at everything.
So yeah, Ned goes to kill the deserter because thatâs his job and, âThe man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.â Heâs very dramatically honorable. Oh, and the guy tells Ned he saw White Walkers, but Ned says theyâve been dead for ages.
So then theyâre on their way back, and then find a dead stag and a dead direwolf, with puppies. Super weird because direwolves havenât been south of The Wall in centuries, but the Stark kids are gonna raise the puppies. Nedâs worried because the stag is the sigil of the royal family, and the direwolf is his house sigil, so if you believe in omens, this is a bad one.
We get like this brief scene of CERSEI LANNISTER (sheâs the queen, and sheâs married to ROBERT BARATHEON, but no one calls her Cersei Baratheon for some reason) and her twin brother JAIME LANNISTER talking about their deadly secret at the funeral of a guy who apparently found out about it. The dead guy is JON ARRYN, and he was sort of like a father to both the king and to Ned. He was the Hand of the King (the guy who basically does all the kingâs chores while the king just gets fat), so Robert needs a new one.
So the king and his entire fuckinâ family go up to Winterfell so Robert can ask Ned to be his Hand. This is also when we find out that not only were Robert and Ned raised together, but they should have been brothers-in-law because Robert was engaged to Nedâs sister Lyanna before she died. Robert decides theyâll join their houses by marrying his son JOFFREY BARATHEON to Nedâs daughter, Sansa, and Ned is quiet because king but heâs like *INTERNALLY SCREAMING* because this is a lot to take in, dude, slow down!
Oh, yeah, and we meet TYRION LANNISTERÂ in a brothel. Heâs the queenâs other brother, a dwarf. Heâs a lush, but heâs brilliant.
So then we get a scene in Pentos, which is across the Narrow Sea and not in King Robertâs lands. Here, weâre introduced to DANAERYS TARGARYEN, whose brother VISERYS TARGARYENÂ is preparing her to be wed to a savage Dothraki ruler, KHAL DROGO, like a brood mare basically so that Drogo will lend him an army to invade Westeros with. Viserys is a douchebag, and Danaerys is a quiet girl who doesnât want to marry a savage who doesnât even speak the same language. Theyâre the only survivors of House Targaryen, and their father, the Mad King Aerys, was the king before Robert usurped him and sent the Targaryens into exile.
Thereâs a feast in Winterfell for the king when Nedâs brother Benjen rides in. Benjenâs a Night Watchman, and he came to recruit, and Jon Snow wants to go. âTaking the blackâ (which is the slang term for joining the Nightâs Watch) is basically the most honorable thing a bastard can do. Benjen tries to discourage him because Nightâs Watchmen canât have families, but Jon doesnât care about that. Then Jon has an odd conversation with Tyrion about sons who arenât wanted (since they have that in common, as Tyrionâs a dwarf). Tyrion advises Jon to âownâ his status, to wear it like armor so it canât be used to hurt him.
Sansa gets a crush on Joffrey. Itâs gross because Joffreyâs an sadistic fuck, but we donât know that yet.
Catelyn gets a secret message from her sister, Jon Arrynâs wife, claiming that he was murdered by the Lannisters. Ned was indecisive about accepting the title before, but he feels compelled to investigate the claim and protect the king from his crazy in-laws.
So then we get Danaerysâ marriage to Drogo. The newlyweds just sit on a dais and watch, but itâs a pretty savage event. âA Dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair.â They get some weird ass gifts (like fuckinâ SNAKES?), but one guy who brings Danaerys books is JORAH MORMONT, and heâll become a translator and friend for her. Finally, sheâs presented with three dragon eggs. Theyâre assumed to be petrified after hundreds of years. Oh, and itâs important to note that the wife of a Khal (Dothraki ruler) is called KHALEESI, because thatâs how sheâll be known now. Drogoâs wedding present to her is a horse. Then they ride off into the sunset to consummate their marriage, and itâs sort of... well, you can definitely tell sheâs doing it because she has to. Drogoâs not brutal like she expected, though.
So then the king, Ned, and a bunch of the men go on a hunting trip back in Winterfell, and Bran goes climbing on the walls of the damn castle again like a total lunatic. Buuuut he accidentally catches the queen and her twin brother having sex... And yeah, to protect their secret, Jaime throws Bran out the window.
WHAT A WAY FOR AN EPISODE TO END.

Itâs an endless source of frustration for me how often the willingness to let go is confused for a lack of caring. The thing is, I donât want anyone to do anything for me that they donât want to do. That includes everything from favors to just having a conversation. If you donât want to talk or write with me, then I sincerely donât want you to. Itâs not passive aggressive, itâs not me cutting you off, itâs me genuinely wanting you to feel safe and healthy, no matter how much that includes or excludes me. Itâs also me not wanting to invest myself in a relationship that isnât wanted, so itâs not entirely selfless. Why would I want a relationship someone else doesnât?
It doesnât mean that I donât care. It means I care enough not to ask you for any more than youâre willing to give me. If youâre better off without me, then I wish you the best life has to offer, from the bottom of my heart. Just donât make me feel guilty about that.
