I wonder sometimes
I feel like Iâm chasing after ghosts
Seeing her pictures on the net
Such an eventful summer break
Bright smiles, limelight, friends old and new
While Iâm justÂ
me
Sheâs caring too, and smart
If he had met her
I think heâd had picked herÂ
insteady
of me
Most of them did
I wonder
will I ever stop being
a Plan B
Iâm tired of being
a safety net
a candle
Iâm not that strong
nor that luminous
I have my weak points
and dark sides
And it scares me
to be left behind
alone
when he finds out
I SHOULD KNOW BETTER
To not compare
To not judge
To just do my best
I am me
And she is her
We live two different lives
Perhaps in different worlds
Perhaps it will always be different
Still
I rise
Every day
Every moment
I fight this battle of angst inside me
I refuse
I will rise
I will not letÂ
myself
Be taken down by feelings of inferiority
No one can save me
But myself
He is him
And I am Me
We may be each otherâs laughter
But we are to carry our weight
Together
I refuse
I will rise
I will not letÂ
him
Take all the burden
alone
Alone we are fragile
Together we are strong
Help me up, my friend
And one day
Youâll be proud to have a friend
Such as I
And I to you

Blue Moon
Like a net of stars pulled towards a blue moon,
we found a way to destroy a diversity of distances
and inhabit each otherâs hearts.
With every jubilant marvel at Mother Montezuma
and her snowy steps, Storie Lake, silence
amongst covens of pines,
we fell deeper and deeper into her solace.
As the crickets chirp again and the sparrows
return to our home, weâre pulled back into the loop
of realityâs time, where our English teacher will age
and our rooms will be occupied by foreign souls.
We danced on the moon together in all our obsolescence
feeling the pull of our foreign, dark matter
and praying to the ravens and the lizards
that we might remain a little longer.
But deserts fall prey to winds and winds of time,
and if we have loved this desert we must love
its nature of evaporating and decaying and forgetting.
We shall say goodbye to discover
how to feed on land without red dustÂ
or the agonizing clarity of inky night.
Our moon remains in the sky,
our planet among our stars,
our home disappearing from us.

Pity
What if you donât fee like caring anymore?
if I were to give up, who would really care?
my roomies?
friends?
Leila?
Rene?
âŚPandie?
I cannot say that I have lost faith,
I still very well know why I came here,
I still know what I want to do
the ideal me lures up in the distance,
unreachable, chatting happily with everyone else
smiling, but not only smiling, but smiling for a reason
simply having a reason to smile
Giving up is too easy
It is difficult to decide whether I am miserable
or whether it is just that I am finally content with the way I really am
a miserable and pitiful blob of booger
not having the courage to speak up,
finding it difficult to find the need to rise out of bed
only to repeat the same mistakes again
only to be ever more miserable, and shy and disgusting and odd
and repulsive
I have come to accept all of this
I do not want it, but I do not fight against it
maybe it is not my role to shine in the world
maybe it is my duty to crawl in the muddy puddles of life
miserably clinging from one day to another not knowing where to go
yet still knowing it very well
hating yourself and pitying the very image you have in mind
just wanting to let go
wanting to not to care
to cradle in misery
being content with being me

Blood Moon Musings
I look around as we sit in the student center that looks like the garage of a high school rock band andÂ
Iâm in awe.
The beautiful people that surround me with all their quirks and smiles and habits and clothes and countries. I will never find them anywhere else.
The blood moon is out and we all crowd the steps to the castle to gaze at it. This eclipse wonât happen again for months, perhaps years. This joy of being with the people that have loved me the most in a place that has comforted me the most wonât happen again. For months. Perhaps years.
I think of the people that I love, all sprawled across the world like a net of stars tied together by a moon. That love doesnât change, despite the swirling sky, the swirling tide, the swirling emotions, the swirling time. Thereâs a piece of me carved out for those people, a chunk of flesh that wonât heal.
Iâm rejoicing in that scar.
I donât understand why weâre all here, why we move around and do work and try to rush all the time. I know that we cling to each other like the syrup my roomie used to put in her tea and thatâs all we know, all we can do. All the star dust laced in each person Iâm now discovering, I canât unsee it. I will never stop believing in the beauty of people, the beauty of my people.
I thank whatever universe or constellations or god or deity or force that brought me to this point of joy.
Iâm in love with life.

Plastic Hearts
No one to save me but a plastic heart,
no thing to heal me but a plastic lighter
as I recognize that demons gnash their
teeth when angels begin a chorus.
Watch the spiral and chaos of it all,
the harmonized decay of sincerity
as we all dodge each other and our
silly musings, thoughts not worth enough
the effort it takes to vocalize them.
See why I canât love you? Itâs too
much of her and me and you, too
much uncertainty to be reckless again.
The problem with possessing plastic
is that it scratches easily, breaks under
force and concrete, is too stiff to make up
a heart and too pliable to hold any pain.

He was never like that with me
When I first came to UWC, I never thought that it would be riddled with many of problems it is. The fact that students care about the UWC ethos or went through a âstrenuousâ selection process is negligible, when you notice problems that would simply not be tolerated in most other schools.
People getting so intoxicated that they canât remember what they did or didnât do the night before, a culture which is widely accepted, even encouraged in many circles. Moreover, the actions forgotten by many from the night before are quickly forgiven no matter how repulsive or categorically wrong they would seem in a different context. Instead feeble excuses are given, such as âhe was drunkâ, âshe was drunkâ, or âhe was never like that with meâ. Even though these arguments are transparent, people still separate the drunken harasser with the amicable guy as if they are two different people.
It is this attitude of dissociation, in which campus habitually fails. If there is a problem with a person, people too frequently discard it, seeing only the aggressorâs respective place in the social hierarchy. People here are selfish. They only care about how a single event affects them; if it doesnât change their interactions with the person they donât give a fucking shit. In this way, those who still worship the ground a second year stands on, just for a mild piece of attention or appreciation are nearly bad as the original villain.
Studentâs inebriated actions are discounted because they were drunk, or at the most forgiven after a facebook message or small token of food. Taking advantage of people is accepted due to someone having a âhard summerâ or âmissing their second yearsâ. Drunken confessions are negated by a morning apology and a shite, clichĂŠd excuse.
Yet when we had all those meetings last year, about which we all loved to complain, the bullshit would just flow like a TOK lesson.
âAny type of assault will not be toleratedâ
âIf you see something you must report itâ
Information rejected due to our arrogance in the benevolence of our community. What fucking community. A community, in which we endorse those who are popular despite the abhorrence of their behaviour. If this has happened so early in the year, how many cases of âthey were both drunkâ had a similar hidden malice last year? Probably Many, too many.
It is this very community that tolerates things like this to happen. The attitude âhe was never like that with meâ should never be acceptable, and is blind and weak. Yet Iâm sure we will hear the arguments of âhe was drunkâ or âshe was drunkâ repeated time and time again, well past the end of my two years at UWC. All too often people sacrifice their true beliefs to be socially accepted or seen as cool. We were chosen because we were supposed to be better than this.
I shall name this because I donât care what he thinks of me.

Eclipse
                      sharing the same sky
                    meant something to me,
two souls together in a sweet reality
yet the sun and moon can only pass by,
now we are gazing at different constellations
               and admiring opposing light gradations
                    and sharing the same sky
                      not like we used to,
                      but as strangers do.

Tell me about Duino
Tell me about Duino. No do not tell me about the friends you made, the memories you shall never forget, or even the lessons you learned.  I have heard those stories before, no tell me about Duino. The village that the Austrian tourists come to see, as they nearly walk into mensa asking where âREELIKAYâ is. Tell me about the village that for some reason more cyclists pass through than cars. Tell me stories of the wind that sweeps through the streets even when there is no idealistic student to feel it. Why do you look so uncomfortable? Because there is no distinguishing the two. It was the village were Boltzmann hanged himself, but it was where I learned that fact from my physics teacher who clicked his teeth louder than he spoke. It is a place where Dante wrote part of his epic, but also a place where I was moved by the words you have scribbled in your little notebook. It is the place where the signs are in Slovene and Italian, yet the languages I heard and learned stretched further than one could imagine. There is a castle, a bar, a pizzeria, it has all of those things, but so do many places. Although, my UWC experience didnât happen in any other place.
I danced in Mickeys and lost myself in the music while you held me. I spoke to you for the first time in the back of an osmica and we fell into an intense love. I found you having a smoke in the abandoned hotel escaping the rain, I sat with you to wait out the storm, but our conversation lasted hours after the sound of lightning ceased. You discovered me on the rocks of porto overlooking the sea with tears in my eyes. You sat next to me and listened to my fears without judgment, and even bought me a gelato to make me feel better. We strolled through rilke late at night, trying to be quiet so Stephen wouldnât hear us, but the harder we tried, the louder our laughs echoed through the trees. You told me your dreams on the beach of cernizza, the cracking fire reflecting in your eyes and illuminating your beauty. You laid in my arms as we stared in silence at the stars in Carso.
You want to know about Duino? I cannot help you. There is no objectivity with that small village outside of Trieste to me anymore. Duino cannot exist in my mind without the faces of the people I experienced it with; although, I also cannot think of the people I love without thinking of the village where we feel in love.Â

A Tribute to the Citgo Sign
Necessary background knowledge: I go to college in the same city I lived in until I was five. It has this sign:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z39E5JoimVk
The sign inhales, red lights spreading. Mesmerized, I turn my head to follow it, disappearing and reappearing from behind dark buildings. I am nearly sleeping, my head leaning against the edge of my carseat There are memories I didnât know I still had This city kept them for me - tucked away on that strip of highway for 15 years I found one on the bus to a club yesterday - the breathing red sign
And it wasnât just that I remembered her. For a moment, with that same engulfing, calm rhythm, that slow turn of my head, I was her
for a moment yesterday I was five years old and tomorrow I will be four times as old as she was - and lonely
Itâs almost funny to me - I had one home back then - right along that strip of highway, dreaming beside the huge red sign and now I have so many I lay down and wonder which pair of arms I wish would wrap around me and this place - undecorated dorm room and taunting sleepless nights, a few minutesâ evening drive from the lulling red lights - is cold and barren and yearning for something far away

The deepest Oceans of a Free Country
As I stood beside the bed of one of my beloved first years I witnessed the thrill of what a free country has to offer to those who had not yet experienced the perks of a puissant nation. It was more about the opportunities a country that holds all the nuances this world had to offer. I knew that my friends cherished the dynamics such diversity was exposing them to, but what fascinated me was their adrift onto the seas of opportunities. They were all of a sudden part of a current where everything was one click away, or maybe just a phone call away. There was however a common pattern that lead both of their existing worlds; both past and present were lead by some strange paper made rectangles with numbers on them. (Thats the traditional way of describing it, at least) Money. Money, did not seem like a problem, despite the prototype of their background, which indeed further enriched the community they now belonged to. But between the lines of treasuring the new opportunities and drifting into the new current, the outlines of their existence would soon start shaking. The first time they went for a swim, it definitely seemed like Rafiki had just exposed them to the Lionâs Kingdom. (Refernece: Simbaâs birth) They could have had everything: Zebras coming from Antarctica, Lions coming from the Everest, Gorillas coming from underwater, birds with fish tales and so on. A world full of wonders; everything in the palm of their hands. EVERYTHING. But how can you control everything? How did they control everything? Truth: they didnt. They opened doors to everyone that knocked; their stomach welcomed every eastern, western, southern, northern food there existed. Lured by the depths and colors of every being, they found it hard to distinguish their favorite color, or their favorite being. There was this one butterfly, one with the colors of the wind. This one butterfly gave the impression of a dancing angel swimming in the deepest oceans. But as you can imagine there were plenty of butterflies, all different. It was the privilege a free country offered: endless choices. But the question is: would you chose your favorite? Or would you keep all of them as part of your endless collection? I found my beloved first years losing themselves in the deep waters of the dancing butterflies, desiring everything and getting nothing.

I love you, I love you, I love you; from and introvert
So you want to know
how to love an introvert
Downcast eyes donât meant disinterest
Iâm intimidated by your charm
When I stutter it reflects
the heart palpitations I get,
when I hear your voice.
You may not know when
an introvert will begin to love you
But if I do
Iâll love you more than
the yellowing pages of a well-read book
more than I love
cancelling Friday night plans
more than I love
the sound of
complete silence.

Unapologetic Confession
Now that we still live so close, the door I used to open everyday was just there, but there is always a ferocious force that makes me relinquish to reach it; not even to knock the front door nor ring the bell. I still can feel so much in my consciousness, a wall â a sort like Berlin Wall might explain. Itâs painful, biting, scarful but the fact that the grief and my inner conflict have been attained again and again, over and over, I am completely numb now. I am nerveless, yet lost in microcosm of this vain vastness. Manipulate me, command me, manoeuvre me, and the next day denounce your favouritism. Good memories we have had, good friends we have met; well, I think itâs time for me now to pack them into my travelling chest and I shall voyage into the coming waves of apathetic cold wind.Â

The Message I Wish I Would Send
Hey you, hey beautiful,
I always hate that this comes next, but Iâm sorry I havenât written in so long. Â Iâm sorry we havenât skyped like we said we would. Â Iâm sorry weâve drifted away without even meaning to. Â I keep telling myself that Iâll message you tonight, but I always find an excuse and I never find a way. Â Thatâs why this is the message Iâll never send.
I hope youâre well. Â I hope that classes arenât too tough, that youâre out doing the shit you love, that youâre just as happy as I remember you to be. Â I hope you had an amazing summer. Â We should catch up sometime cause I really miss you. Â The summer days arenât quite the same and the beachâs lost its flair and I miss you. Â Thatâs why this is the message I wish I would send.
I was doing some reading the other day (read: instead of studying for my upcoming interval exam) and I came across this amazing line Lemony Snicket.  I almost threw open my laptop and sent it to you, but I knew it wasnât fair⌠That youâre probably off doing your own thing⌠ That youâve probably moved on⌠ That you probably think Iâve moved onâŚ, but I just wanted to tell you that âI will love you until the chances of us running into one another slip from slim to zero, and until your face is fogged by distant memory, and your memory faced by distant fog, and your fog memorized by a distant face, and your distance distanced by the memorized memory of a foggy fog.â  But, thatâs why this is the message I canât bring myself to send.
All the best,
-.

In Response to "To My Second Years"
To my first years (who are current second years)
What you need to understand is that everyone moves on at their own pace. Just because someone tries to still keep in touch with their old lives does not mean they are not moving on. It is perfectly okay for someone to still keep up with their old lives whilst starting a brand new adventure! Life after UWC can be difficult. The relationships you make at UWC are not something to be discarded of right away for your âlife that is waiting for you.â UWC is not a transient two year experience of your life - it continues well after youâve graduated. Some people find it really difficult to cope with physically leaving UWC and itâs completely fine that they take their time with dealing with it! Whilst on the other hand, others find it easy to move on, which shouldnât be mistaken for them not caring at all about their UWC experience. All in all, everyone moves on in their own way, so let them be and respect how they decide to cope with the process. It is not easy and a lack of support from our first years makes the process all the more difficult.Â
The sad thing is, you will probably only comprehend all of this a year from now.Â
