REFLECTION
So this is where we end this assessment. Kind of bitter sweet to be honest. I think thereās something about doing our first year during a global pandemic that makes us reflect on our time a bit differently. I also think thereās something really hilarious about doing an art history class while living through a historical event. Maybe theyāll talk about the influence of coronavirus on design one day, hah!
I took a real risk in doing this entire course, but this class has really made all the worry and doubt of my ability moot. I almost didnāt enroll because I thought I was making a huge mistake. All I can say is thank God I chose this over my other āplan Bā options. I donāt think Iāve ever been so excited about what Iām doing before. Iāve learnt more in this short time with barely any face to face classes than I ever did prior to being at RMIT. I suppose thatās very little thanks to me and all to the people who supported me this semester. Iām really thankful to all the lecturers and teachers for their constant support, knowledge and encouragement to push ourselves this semester. Weāre all going to be better at this crazy adventure weāre on because of you guys. And thanks to all the people Iāve met and gotten to work with over this time. I really enjoyed collaborating and getting to know people in this class. I think seeing other peopleās work and how they put their ideas into their designs has been so beneficial for me. Also, BEST LECTURES EVER. 10/10. Obviously, this semester was still so challenging and Iām sure everyone can attest to this. I really had no idea what I was doing most of the time. First year of uni, no real prior knowledge of this area of design, and no direction in what I wanted to do. It was a weekly struggle to push through the confusion and worry to get to the end, but it was so worth it. From having never even properly touched photoshop or indesign before to completing my first Zine, id like to think thereās been a hell of a lot of growth happening. I can only hope the rest of my time at uni is the same. I really enjoyed this class. Whatever I could manage to attend or participate in has really made me more excited about what I do, or rather what I havenāt done yet. Itās also opened me up to the importance of what we as designers contribute to the world. Itās not so much about what you can claim youāve done as a designer, but more about what all designers do collectively for the world we live in.
Itās been wild, and I loved it all!
Final ForĀ āAsk me Anythingā Assignment
Above demonstrates my final design for the āAsk me anythingā assessment which is due today. Overall iām really pleased with how it turned out and after many hours of being frustrated drawing and figuring layouts I can say iām proud of what i have done during this time in isolation and not being able to attend face to face classes. I think iām most pleased with the fact that i hand drew everything myself after researching comic books and figuring out character styles and making it work with my own style, and although itās not perfect and i still have a lot of to improve on iām content with what i have submitted. From this assignment i think i have come away with gaining a lot more skills and illustrator abilities that i want to carry on learning in order to improve my adobe expertise. The area i found most challenging was fitting a certain amount of information into my comic book illustrations, and personally i have a habit of writing big paragraphs so for this task i had to make sure i focused on only addressing key information. Overall this had to be one of my favourite tasks out of the whole coarse as it allowed me to creatively challenge myself and step out my comfort zone which was a great experience.Ā
Erin this is so sick when I look through your Zine I can like hear comic sans talking to me. The way you captured the personality and character is genius. Great work
FINISHED ZINE (Ask Me Anything!)
I was going to wait to upload these until I got all my posts up in chronological order, but I figure I may as well get this up and start fresh afterwards. I know, what a mess. Can you feel my struggle through the screen? Thank you next Miss āRona, I will not miss you next semester.Ā
Now to discuss the actual Zineā¦Ā
In choosing a significant and influential figure in design, I chose none other than THE David Hockney. His contributions to art and design have always been a huge source of inspiration from me, especially his never ending curiosity into the next best thing (eg. the obsession with digital art and the use of technology in advancing art). However, I didnāt want to just interview Hockney as himself because he is still a living artist, and he can therefore speak for himself.Ā I chose to look through some of his older work, as I was also interested in art pop. I remembered hisĀ āPortrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)ā from 1972 and looked into the ideas behind the portrait. Turns out, the painting is packed full with insight to a time nearing the end of Pop Art, and a commentary on the difference between his upbringing in England and the decadence of Californiaās lifestyle. I thought this was really poignant, and despite its fun and playful personality, left a lot unsaid within the painting itself.Ā
I then decided I would interview the figure from the painting to add another layer to the understanding of the piece. I wanted to give the figure some of their humanity back, and explore the way Pop Art was experienced for a young person at the time. I aimed to centre the figure on a life that honours Hockneyās (such as his sexuality, his affinity for America and the mediums he used to express these things), and discuss the attraction of the figure to Pop Art through their experiences in California. The metaphor of the swimming pool being a world of luxury and experience that the figure had yet to everĀ ādiveā into was the idea behind the whole project, which I think is communicated in the interview.Ā
Aside from taking a million days to research what the actual hell a zine *is*, I can honestly say that this might be one! I guess weāll find out when the grades come in. This assignment was sooo fun that I think I made like three copies just to muck around before settling on this one. Iām actually really proud of this work (hell, Iām proud I even have something to hand in), I think for someone who was so confused and doubtful about this assignment its a wild success. Maybe I should refrain from using the wordĀ āsuccessā until someone else tells me itās successful. Oh well.Ā
Reposting for the sake of keeping a chronological order SORRY GUYS
An example of creating subtle nods to hockey's work surrounding pools to consolidate and pull from his intentions as a significant figure to better understand my subject and communicate the ideas behind the Zine/interview. Here I recreated the elements and basic ideas of his work and recreated it in a way I felt had an individual style that would be consistent with my own work and intentions when doing my project.Ā

ASSESSMENT 3 UPDATE
just a quick update: Here are some of the very first workings of the Zine. I decided to interview one of hockey's painting as a sort of challenge (as if I needed any more challenges lol). I used and appropriated Hockney's work to better communicate my ideas and relate to his work and the pop art movement. I intend for this zine to feel like an intimate diary of the figure, as if you're talking to someones memory instead of them as a person.
WEEK 10 LECTURE
Yeah Iām not going to lie, I was not paying a lot of attention to this one. I blame coronavirus entirely (I blame her for everything to be honest. Not focused? Rona. Feeling tired? Rona. Didnāt get a parking spot? Rona.)
Iām just gonna keep it short and sweet.
Basically messaging over advertising. Taking design and making it more than profit. Taking function beyond sale and into topics. Finding a way to identify with design and even having design become representative of ideas and people.
Thatās honestly all I have for this one. My bad. Here, Iāll make up for it with this extremely cute cow.
From the collage activity!! I reeeeallly loved doing this. Wanted to take some inspo from post modernism and do some commentary on the ideal way of existing in the word right now: fame.
I love love love it. Itās going on the wall for sure.
Week Seven - Architexture (WORKSHOP)
For this weekās workshop we had to look outside our window and to the built world to find type. I live in the suburbs so it was kind of hard to find many things just out side of my window so I took a walk around the outside of my house and I found pipes and rails became my best bud.Ā
I was most proud of my pipe that forms the shape of a y, initially I took the photo and was like that has a bend thatāll make the letter j and then I was pleasantly surprised that it looked more like a y when I cropped it. I was also proud of my lowercase h, had to stand on a chair in the garden to take a photo of it, the pipes were off a neighbours shed aha, was worth it though! I was quite surprised at the assortment of letters I found, I did not expect to find an s,x or y like theyāre very curvy letters and itās usually more common to see things with straight block forms, strange that ha.
The order of the pics, unintentional or intentional you tell me haha, left it in for a bit of a joke, letās see if anyone notices. Found this workshop quite a fun one, however, did freeze my ass off to get the pics, itās bloody cold in Melbourne right now, we are officially in winter, donāt know how we made it to June so fast but itās real chilly!
Very funny Cass, I see what you did there š¤£
WEEK 9 LECTURE
IāM SO EXCITED FOR THIS ONE!!
I donāt know why the notions of the punk rock period really resonates with me, but post modernism and all other conversations surrounding the failure of the ideal future really excites me. That doesnāt sound right but I think you get the point. Thereās a really cool balance between self awareness and numbness of the self that punk finds itself in. A real sense of doom for the future that seems to tangle itself with apathy for this fear, because in the grand scheme of things; all things should matter and donāt matter all at once. Itās chaotic and still. The commentary on what is going on, very raw and brutal self critiques, stopping the push into the future... itās in my opinion one of the most relatable movements to the world I experience and live in now. (1975 fans, rise!!)
I also really love the contradictions of punk that some how make the most sense. Itās the same feeling people who hate maths feel when they donāt get the formula right but the answer is correct (lol ME). How punk managed to revolt against being pleasing and ideal and STILL managed to be consumed by the majority is hilarious. I think perhaps because it highlights a need within people to relate to the idea that the future doesnāt exist yet, and the one we keep trying to build doesnāt guarantee success. This pertains to design too. Not everything that is expected is the right idea, not everything that is sensible is best. Post modernism really challenges what is accepted and I respect it to no end.

WEEK 8 LECTURE
āThe invention of the futureā
Youāve got my attention now, Karen and Andy.
Weāve spent all this time looking into history to explain the present existence of design, but for this week we look into the past to predict the future... thatās intense, dude. When you think ānewā, you think shiny and unused and probably along the lines of something tech-y. But this lecture had me thinking about how the word new was applied to just about everything. Even language and font (Parole in LibertĆ ) is a perfect example of how the simplest things can be forward thinking. Even in paintings! I hadnāt ever thought to include ideas of acceleration into any work. I guess Iām just not cut out to be a futurist.
Anything that exists, is already old, and therefore must become new-er... right? Well what would that involve? Breaking tradition and recognising what has been accepted as normal seems to be the perfect way to explore what can be made better, for the future. The whole fururists cookbook idea is WILD. W I L D. I mean who doesnāt want pasta?! But I can see what they were trying to do. Thereās almost a rebellion in thinking about the future, because it demands destructing what is NOW.
This whole lecture had me thinking about what I could try to make more futurist. For some reason I thought of how umbrellas havenāt been updated in a looong time. Thereās really nothing thatās been done to it that I can think of... except for the umbrellas on hats. So what could an umbrella be? Thereās gotta be a better version of rain protection that doesnāt involve holding a stick above your head all day? Honestly I canāt think of an answer. I also now have an irrational anger towards umbrellas. Like, just be better š
WEEK 7 LECTURE
Bauhaus! You know her, you love her, you wish you were her. Or not, idk itās your life.
This lecture made me wish I payed more attention in studio arts when my teacher tried to tell me about the Bauhaus when I was looking into Paul Klee and Kandinsky. Sadly, I did not. I did however cling onto the idea of construction and have always been curious about just how literally to take that concept. Beyond just art, the Bauhaus took their obsession with sort of abstracted and very efficient forms to everything: print, games, furniture and architecture.
There is also something so deliciously ironic about how the bauhaus applauded efficiency and reconstruction of forms and ideas, yet held the belief that women couldnāt think in 3 dimensions. Seems a touch inconsistent but I digress. I suppose I assumed their work and influences would propel thinking forward in terms of looking at what COULD be, but the thought translated into how to redefine what HAS BEEN. Nonetheless, the Bauhaus proved to be a highly influential and at the forefront of changing a what was believed to just be a practice into a never ending, ever living idea of the Bauhaus.
ASSESSMENT 3!
Iāve been sitting on a few ideas for this assessment for a while now, and Iām pretty sure Iām going to go with Pop Art. I donāt really want to interview the movement per se, I think thereās more to look at within that movement. I did have some other ideas like the Rubikās cube, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney, but Iām still not entirely sure about whatās gonna happen. The advice I got from class was great and I think Iām going to research a bit more to see if anything stands out.
WEEK 5 LECTURE
What stood out the most to me in this lecture was the idea about the grid.
Thereās something very human in trying to make sense of things, whether that be by creating pattern, system, efficiency or order. Mathematic principles, nature, astrology are all tools we use to make things... with no better way to say it... how they should be instead of how they are.
This is a concept I had learnt previously in psychology, where humans crave the feeling of alighnment and perfection. So much so that our mental perception of things like depth and illusion are directly related to our understanding of designed artefacts such as streets and buildings, that commonly include grid like and geometric shapes (in our society, at least). I didnāt pay enough attention in psychology to tell you WHY we do this, I just know enough to be able to say we do.
So WHY wouldnāt I have ever considered this to happen in print?! The use of a compass to draw a capital A, or looking to anatomy to define letters, the drawing away from human flaws in hand drawings to mechanic like perfection in print. It only makes sense that the development of history follows the same trend as it did in the industrialisation of technology, biology, art, etc. as it did in print. Duh!
I figure I should make a quick comment about the elephant/pandemic in the room/world.
Coronavirus has been a hot topic for some time now, but itās officially starting to have some consequences in Australia. I myself have really struggled with this situation, from anxiety of being in public and getting ill to feeling pressure to keep my family safe, itās been rather difficult. Thereās been a lot of changes in my tiny corner of the world to make sure everyone is safe and Iād be lying if I said that wasnāt challenging in regular day to day life.
I worry for my uni classes and the whole experience, and for everyone elseās too. Weāre all in the same boat, just a kind of crappy one that looked a bit better in the brochure. But Iām sure weāll make the most of it. Iām extremely grateful to be even getting an education this year with everything going on. While I can only attest to my struggles as a student Iām aware and appreciative to all the teachers and workers in other areas for keeping MY life going as best they can. Itās kind of lovely to see how well weāve adjusted to this mess. Hopefully this is over and we can come back to second semester face to face again.
Will I most likely lose motivation? Hell yeaaa. Am I gonna try and push through? You betttt.

WEEK 4 LECTURE
Iām not going to lie, I was excited for this one because of the use of Motƶrhead as I myself was a WWE fan as a kid, and Triple H was indeed one of my favourite wrestlers (purely because he did the wet hair look before Kim Kardashian ever thought about it and I will forever stan).
I mostly took away from this lecture the use and appropriation of Black-Letter, and how it was used for multiple reasons due to its aesthetic and the journey/history of the lettering. Iāve always loved that kind of lettering because of how much of a presence in commands, that could explain why I have this bad boy (which may or may not reside on my bedside table) for ādecorativeā purposes. Say what you will about JƤger, there is no denying the bottle is so damn beautiful š„ŗ
WEEK 3 LECTURE
I still haven't gotten over the fact that there are over 6 THOUSAND, 9 HUNDRED living languages in the world. That is insanity. I reflect on myself, and all the times Iāve experienced having to learn a new language. I myself speak (some better than others) 3 languages; English, Bahasa and a dialect of the Batak language group. Even still, I was educated in Deutsch all of my primary and secondary school, aberĀ Ich spreche auch nach sieben Jahren lernen kein Deutsch...? If you're German I'm truly so sorry for that attempt. I even tried Spanish for a hot minute, all I can say is yo soy necessito di nero and yo Como manzanas. The point is; learning languages was clearly a skill deemed important by the society I grew up in, however I never really pondered the importance and intricacies of what I was learning. Where did the words come from and how do we communicate them?Ā
When I was a kid, word art was the height of creativity. All we knew were fonts like Papyrus and Calibri, but to us it was all just for fun. But little did I know that all the decoration and variety comes from a place of purpose. I guess I had just assumed people wroteĀ āye oldeā bibles with all that excessive drip just because they had all the time to do so. But OBVIOUSLY itās because they held that text to such a high priority; worthy of decor and labour. Now I read my bible and don't even consider any of that, but that's just my ignorance to how little I consider written text to be a design rather than just a means to read. Ā
This lecture was great because it really gave some perspective to the importance of communicating in history, including how we get from one place to another with written language. From the thickness of a brush stroke, to symbols and the use of colours, I feel more enlightened knowing that all things are purposeful, even if I take it for granted now that I use written language so often.Ā
