the girl of your dreams ❤️
So word on the street is that Elektra might be returning in Born Again, and seeing people talk about it has honestly got me thinking about her and Matt again and about how complicated, magnetic, and tragic their relationship really is.
The thing about Matt and Elektra is that they don’t fit neatly into any idea of what love should look like. They’re not partners in the traditional sense — they’re mirrors. Painful, honest, and often cruel mirrors that reflect back everything the other is trying not to see. Every time they collide, they end up facing the truths they’ve both been running from: the violence he hides behind his faith and the vulnerability she buries beneath her chaos.
Matt sees in Elektra the part of himself that he’s always trying to bury — the violence, the anger, the need to feel something beyond guilt and faith. She tempts him, yes, but not in the shallow, seductive way people assume. It’s deeper than that. She tempts him to stop pretending, to stop being the martyr. To admit that he doesn’t just fight for justice — he fights because he wants to. Because in that pain, in that struggle, he feels something close to purpose. Elektra makes him confront the truth that maybe he’s not as righteous as he wants to believe — that maybe being “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen” is the truest version of himself, and that terrifies him.
And Elektra? She sees in Matt the one person who ever looked at her and didn’t see a weapon. He sees her chaos and doesn’t flinch. He sees her. For a girl raised on blood, control, and violence, that kind of recognition is intoxicating. But she mistakes his compassion for absolution, and he mistakes her passion for redemption. They’re both wrong — and still, they keep trying. She thinks that if she can pull him into her world, maybe she won’t have to face her loneliness. He thinks that if he can save her, he can save himself. Both of them are reaching for grace, and both of them find damnation instead.
They love each other through destruction. When Matt is with Elektra, his faith bends. His rules blur. And when Elektra is with Matt, her rage softens, but only for him. They bring out the most human and the most monstrous sides of each other. Their love is magnetic and unbearable — it makes them feel alive, but it’s the kind of aliveness that burns too hot to last. They exist in that in-between place where love feels like both salvation and self-harm.
Their tragedy is that they’re both chasing salvation through each other. Matt wants to save her because if he can save her, maybe he can prove he isn’t beyond saving himself and Elektra wants to destroy him because if she can make him fall, maybe she won’t have to face how much she wants to rise. They orbit each other endlessly — love, guilt, violence, tenderness — all tangled until it’s impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. They’re not drawn together because they heal each other, but because they understand each other’s brokenness and they both mistake understanding for peace.
What makes them fascinating is that they’re not really opposites, even though people love to frame them that way. Matt isn’t the “light” to her “darkness.” He’s a man living in perpetual shadow, constantly denying how much darkness he carries. And Elektra isn’t pure chaos — she’s grief and loneliness disguised as control. They’re two people who have built entire identities around the parts of themselves they can’t forgive and when they touch, all that pain rises to the surface. And every time they come back to each other, it’s like trying to rewrite the same tragedy in a new language. The ending never changes, but they can’t stop trying to make it mean something different. Because that’s what love is for them — not peace, but persistence. The refusal to let go, even when letting go would save them both.
Matt and Elektra aren’t about right or wrong. They’re about the grey area where love and destruction meet — the kind of love that doesn’t heal you, but exposes every wound you tried to hide. The kind that consumes you, but makes you feel alive enough to forgive the fire.
