Hello. I'll be beginning my first year in September and have some classes back-to-back. Do you think that there will be enough to go directly from one class to another even if the next class is in a different building that is toward the other side of the campus?
Yep! The entire campus is only about a kilometre squared, so it shouldnāt take you more than 10 mins :) Plus, profs usually let you out about 10 mins early so you have some time to get to your next class.Ā

I forgot to ask you some questions. Will we have a planer/agenda. And will we have free wifi on the campus? Thank you!
Yep! The school gives out free agendas and there are two or three wifiās you can use on campus/in rez
Hi! Okay so I just discovered your blog and it's amazing. Thank you so so much for the time that you take to answer the questions. I have some questions. 1-When you rent a book, will you have your money back when you return the book at the end of the semester? 2- What is in the 101 week kit and do we have to buy it? 3- For the Upass can I just go get it or do I have to take an appointment?
Hii! Iām glad you found me :)
1) Iām not 100% sure but.. Iām pretty sure you donāt get your money back. You pay a lot less than you would if you bought it, but you loose that money. So, in my opinion, if the book is renting for 50$ or bought for 100$, I would buy it and then sell it for 75$ so you at least get your money back. (Again, Iāve never rented so ask to be sure)
2) It changes every year, but when I was in first year I got a T-Shirt, bookmarks, an agenda, water bottle, mug, hat, whistle, coupons/discount cards, headband, a tie-bag for your back, pens, pencils, bookmarks, condoms and other little things like that. The T-Shirt was your admission to every 101 week event, so if you want to participate in 101 week you need the kit!
3) You can make an appointment (which I highly recommend) or you can just show up - but be warned that it is awful standing in line and the lines are huge for the first week of school! So an appointment would be best!
Chloe
will i know what times classes are available before i register in may?
Youāll know classes but unfortunately not the prof or location for a while. (Sucks I know!)
Hi! Is it possible to add a minor to a joint honours? Thanks so much!
Iām only doing an honours and it was already a squeeze to get in a minor.. But Iām sure you could try and work something out with an academic advisor! Maybe they could credit some of the courses youāve already taken towards a minor :)
Hi Chloe! I'm planning on doing psych and immersion next year. Throughout your studies which courses did you take in french? Or/And what do you suggest taking in french? Thanks! :)
Hey copycat ;)
I tried to take the courses in french that I either knew I wouldnāt need the vocab later, or I figured I might not do the best so I could hide my mark (in 1st and 2nd year, you canĀ āhideā your mark in an immersion class so that it only shows up as pass/fail and wonāt kill your GPA).Ā
I wouldnāt recommend taking stats, for example, in french unless you were going to continue it in French for the whole time. You learn vocab and terminology that youād have to completely re-learn if you took Stats 2 in English. But I took Child Psychology in French, as well as Social Psych!

Hey! I'm going into the immersion program next year and had some questions about it. Did you ever take helper courses that go along with the content courses? Did you find these helped? Also, in regards to FLS (actual French language courses) did you take those? Did they help? Thanks!
I took both FLS 2581 and 3581! They were really helpful (And easy Aās!). Basically, they involved doing extra readings or little assignments that went along with the course material in theĀ āmainā class. And the prof of the helper class usually attends the main class along with you guys! So if you have questions about the material, theyāre ideal people to ask!
As for FLS classes, yeah! Iām actually doing an advanced FLS minor, so Iāve had to take a bunch! They definitely helped :) I liked the oral expression classes over the grammar, personally, but I enjoyed them all!
Are flex dollars only available to students living in Rez? Also, do you recommend the health insurance available through the university?
Iām not 100% sure, but Iām preeeetty sure anyone can load flex dollars onto their student card. You can then swipe it and use it at the caf, bookstore, etc. And Iāve honestly opted out of the insurance every year because I am covered by my parents - if you donāt already have coverage, then Iām pretty sure itās mandatory!
So I'm half terrified for French Immersion, I've been in it my whole life but the thought of having to participate and speak up in a class full of francophones with my imperfect French is kinda daunting. I don't suppose you'd happen to have some words of advice and/or reassurance for a scared little first year?
Hey! Donāt be scared at all for FI. Almost everyone in the class will be at an average FLS level - and donāt think of it as a competition or that people are judging your French, but rather, think of it as a place to practice! No one will criticize you, and actually, French Immmersion classes are much much smaller than theĀ ānormalā class so itās not as intimidating to speak out! :) The teachers are super helpful and easygoing, so just try and do the best you can! Worst case, you can always change levels of FLS classes or submit assignments in English, due to uOttawaās bilingualism policy. (As long as itās not aĀ āFLSā orĀ āFREā class, of course)

Hi, What would you suggest for an incoming first year? A 7 day meal plan, a 5 day meal plan, or a pay as you go plan?
I would say calculate if a pay as you go would be more worth it than a 5 day plan. The 7 day seems like a little much - I think 5 days would be enough, but then again, if youāre only gonna go a couple times a week, the pay as you go might be the best option. Iām not sure - how much time will you be spending there? Itās up to you in the end. But Iād say maybe the 5 day!

Hi! As an incoming freshman I've been debating whether or to I should buy a 101 Week kit. My own faculty's schedule has yet to be released but so far there doesn't seem to be much that I'd be interested in as part of the SFUO one; excluding the clubs' fair which I'm pretty sure is open to everyone anyways. As someone who doesn't particularly care to party I was considering just taking the time to explore Ottawa instead - what do you think?
Hey!
If youāre not big into drinking or partying, I totally get it. However, there are still some fun events that I took part in during 101 Week that helped me meet a bunch of girls in my program, and it was super nice having familiar faces in the sea of students in Psych 101. Then again, Iām sure there are a ton of other opportunities to meet people - you mentioned the clubs fair, which I think is a fantastic idea - but check the schedule again (it should be up at this point, if not soon). If you donāt think itās worth it, donāt spend the money, but make sure you make a huge effort to meet people on your floor etc! First year is when you meet the most people :) (at least, I found it to be that way!)
Chloe
Hey! Third year student here, just wanted to let you know how helpful your blog was throughout grade 12 and first year and that I'm appreciative of this blog! I actually saw you in the Rez complex in first year (you complimented my pizza) but I was too shy to say anything ahaha anyway, you're awesome :)
Awwww this is so sweet thank you! Of course I complimented your pizza HAHA that sounds like me for sure ;) Iām glad I helped!
