Hello, Lovelies!! I'm sorry it's been a while since I've posted. After writing for this past year's Rickmas event, I was inspired to come up with a fun idea for the summer---Summer Rickation! Severus hates men, so if his daughter were with a girl, I think he’d be sad about her growing up and would 100% have Slipping Through My Fingers by ABBA playing in the background of his dramatic inner monologue—but I don’t think he’d throw a fit or cause a scene. A girl would probably make him feel way more at ease than a guy ever could.

Honestly I think with Severus it depends way less on whether the woman is a muggle or a witch and way more on her personality because let’s be real for a second: Severus is an absolutely insufferable man to deal with emotionally. We can love him dearly as a character all we want but imagine actually having to date him. That is not an easy experience.

The man is deeply avoidant, emotionally constipated and has extremely intense trauma responses. And I don’t mean “oh he gets moody sometimes,” I mean the kind of person who when something triggers him can suddenly have these massive emotional outbursts and make the entire atmosphere implode. Severus doesn’t really do mild emotional reactions. When he snaps, he snaps spectacularly. Which is why I’ve always thought that if he ever had a partner it would have to be someone who simply isn’t scared off by that kind of behavior. Someone stubborn enough not to retreat every time he pushes people away, because Severus absolutely would push people away constantly. Someone emotionally persistent enough to keep moving forward when he instinctively pulls back. Honestly I unironically think someone with a pretty anxious attachment style would survive him better than someone avoidant because if both people start withdrawing emotionally the relationship is dead in three business days.

And the other thing is that Severus is never going to make the first move unless he’s either emotionally cornered, mildly drunk or having some kind of psychological breakdown. He has catastrophic levels of fear surrounding vulnerability and rejection. So the other person would probably need to be pretty bold and thick-skinned because the man throws tantrums when emotionally overwhelmed. Like genuinely. You try getting close to him and suddenly he’s acting like you personally declared war on him.

That said, I’ve always thought he’d actually be calmer in the muggle world after the war in some hypothetical AU where he survives. Mostly because nobody knows who he is there. Nobody’s looking at him and seeing former Death Eater, spy, war hero, traitor, whatever. He’s just some weird bitter middle-aged guy with social issues. And I think that anonymity would genuinely do wonders for him psychologically after spending his entire life trapped inside a hyper-political magical society where everyone is constantly being sorted into moral categories.

And honestly? I think muggles would probably take his backstory way less personally than wizards do because at the end of the day his story is unfortunately not that alien in working-class environments. A neglected kid from an abusive home who falls in with extremist or violent crowds because he’s angry, isolated and desperate for belonging? That’s not some uniquely monstrous. Most people from rough areas have known someone like that at some point. Whereas wizarding society has this extremely rigid moral binary of good people vs evil people, light vs dark, pure hero vs pure villain. The muggle world tends to have a much broader understanding of how social environment, poverty, abuse, alienation and lack of opportunities shape people into who they become. Not in a “nothing is ever your fault” way, but in a much less simplistic way.

Other materials at the time, namely clay, would absorb flavors and germs meaning that if you ate beef off a clay plate your next meal with that plate could have beef flavor and microbes common on cow meat on it.  That would leak out seemingly at random no less.  Heck imagine a sick person coughing into their soup bowl and then months later their germs hiding in the clay would pop out to infect whole new people.

Also the earliest human use of glass we know of is for its sharpness.  Pre-historic people would use volcanic glass as sharp knives for food preparation.  Also beads.  Pretty much any new substance humans get their hands on for most of our history we immediately try to make into beads.
