Imagine: Bloodborne stank
Iosefka’s clinic STINKS of hospital. You know how hospitals smell? Like that but worse bc nobody’s cleaned up in ages and there’s blood rotting in bottles in shelves
Central Yharnam stinks of sweaty hunter armpit and wet dogs. The sewers smell like sewer but also like evil bc there’s beasts in there
Cathedral Ward smells of mould and incense bc that’s what old churches smell like. Just. The permanent stench of rancid incense and candles and bc nobody’s cleaned in ages it also has mould and stuffÂ
Old Yharnam smells like when you burn garbage. It’s all wet ashes and smoldering garbage and charred fur GOD it’s fucking NASTY
Hemwick is the wORST PLACE because they literally fucking disposed of bodies there. Do you know what dead people smell like? Decomp? Preserved corpses? You NEVER get rid of that fucking smell you will be smelling it forever your Hunter will NEVER forgive you for making themg o there
Byrgenwerth probably smells like a public bathroom with a bad problem of black mould you can’t change my mind I HATE SCHOOLS
NNFNIRHFSREG THE FUCKING WOODS STINK OF MUD AND ROTTING WATER AND DECOMPOSITION AND POISON AND HRIHIGSERG
Springboarding off of this, if I may:
Yahar’gul: Decomposing bodies. The cells where the Snatchers drop you off smell relatively ok, all things considered - damp dirt, undisturbed dust - but as soon as you step out of the church doors upstairs the smell of death hits you like a wall, getting worse the closer you get to the Advent Plaza. The room where you find the mummified husks of Mensis and Micolash is mercifully less odorous, but there’s a the hint of ozone in the air, like after a lightning strike.
Lecture Building: the halls where the Slime scholars wander are unnaturally still, as though the place is frozen in time, even if the remaining residents are not. The musty smell of books covered in dust and mold. In the classrooms, there’s the tang of formaldehyde, chemicals and the cloying smell of something that died a very long time ago.
Nightmare Frontier: Ozone and sulfur. The swampy water smells like rotten eggs, and the Lost Children smell like unwashed bodies and old, dried up blood from their unwashed wounds and sadness.
Upper Cathedral Ward: Unrelenting, cloying incense that floods your lungs like tar. The breeze outdoors mitigates it somewhat, but once you’re indoors the smell is inescapable. The Lumenwood Gardens smell like fresh, decomposing compost and petrichor, like it’s not long rained.
Old Abandoned workshop: dead still, undisturbed dust, dirt and old woodsmoke that’s been accumulating since who knows how long. The building has been open to the elements since whoever ransacked it last and smells overwhelmingly of rotting wood and damp and dying flowers. The Abandoned Doll and the spare clothes have a lingering perfume, delicate and musky
