Urahara has been playing people like puppets to keep Aizen and anyone else from touching the Soul King the entire manga. One of Shutara’s mentioned contributions is a system to gauge the stability of the worlds and therefore the Shinigami’s way of life. And she’s a Royal Guard. Szayel helps get rid of Nelliel and is the most graphic example of an Arrancar keeping to the hollow basics of eating others for strength. And not only has Mayuri gone after Quincy so singularly that he believes he knows all there is to them (lmao x2), but he is also a staunch believer in traditional aesthetics (whether bc he feels he must or not, it’s something he uses to rag on Urahara multiple times).

This is truly one of the most unique anons I've ever received, so please know you have done a wonderful job making me laugh. Was truly not expecting this line of questioning when opening my inbox for the first time in a bajillion years.

And, I think Mayuri likes the bugs he creates the most, because he's vain like that. Welcome To My Twisted Mind Skull Beetle Who Doubles As A Traveling Night Light is his favorite bug.

But for real, he has a huge lean toward things centered around evolution and adaptability, so anything that he could then take FURTHER on that evolutionary chain while being robust enough to do extensive testing on would be his favorites. Think water bears. Cockroaches. Spiders. Dragonflies (I just know that bitch has some huge ass ancient reverse evolutionary dragonflies buzzing around somewhere).

Aesthetically, it would be a different story. Obviously he is more partial to butterflies and moths. I guess the only overlap between functional and aesthetic would be dragonflies and spiders. But he seems to not take from spiders much. (Although light up toy Mayuri from TYBW could almost pass as a water bear if you squint).

Also, I do not think he would like Bjork because he just doesn't seem like a huge music person. Due to the nature of his division, he has more exposure to human pop culture than others, but he seems less interested in it than say, Akon. Now, Akon? I think he fucks with Bjork.

I've never thought of Ururu and Jinta being coded as next generation Urahara and Tessai, but I see it!

I like the thought that they grew up in the maggot's nest as well. Something they both have is a great proclivity for making it work, no matter the circumstances. They are often shocked at how things go, but never stutter, always swivel. They are running a sweets shop in the human world as though that was always the dream. They can squeeze into any shape. Hide under the shade of any hat. It's one of the reasons their past was such a good reveal; they maintain a good sense of distance from other characters and, therefore, the audience.

And canonically, Senjumaru did lead an independent group of scientists that Kisuke was a part of, so it's not a stretch to say that Tessai was a part of them. And perhaps even Kukaku.

I'm not sure if I buy that they were making it up to Squad Zero, but both Urahara and Tessai definitely did have contact with Squad Zero members.

I definitely think that they were able to skate so freely to the human world and be left undisturbed because Squad Zero found them useful. After all, they are the ones who would be sending any messages to the Central 46 under the guise of being orders from the Soul King.

Despite being "traitors" to Central 46 and the Gotei 13, Squad Zero knew better. As they knew of Aizen at the time and knew what he was up to, but left him alone as well since they deemed him a loser.

HOWEVER back to the beginning, I do think that Ururu and Jinta are a bit reminiscent of them, now that you bring it up, but they're still their own characters and deviate heavily in ways from their sweet shop parents, which is their charm.

It's like Urahara wanted to make kids who got the chance to grow up in a way he wished he and Tessai could have.
