summary: Waking up on the Hail Mary with 2 dead crewmates wasn't the easiest thing to process. It's no wonder your brain slipped into the darkness the surrounded your ship.
word count: 3,200~
warnings: dissociation, canon character death, pseudo-eulogy
who knew it would be Project Hail Mary that would get me out of my 3-year-long hiatus. I'm a little rusty so apologies for the lackluster writing. Hope you enjoy!
âDo you think we knew each other?â You asked softly, thumbing at the picture in your hand. It was creased and fraying from what you assumed was years of folding and unfolding. It was obvious how loved it was based on how close the creases were to tearing.Â
Your eyes traced the outline of the person captured in the photo, roaming over the features that mirrored yours but looked so foreign to your eyes. This couldnât possibly be you, it seemed tooâŚdistant. You were wearing a hat and holding what seemed to be a patch with your name on it, next to the words Project Hail Mary. Your eyes creased with excitement in the photo, an emotion you hadnât felt in quite some time.Â
I guess floating aimlessly in space will do that to you.Â
Six days ago, you woke up with your entire world light-years out of reach with no recollection of how you got here. The only clues that awaited you were the miscellaneous items in what seemed to be your duffle bag, and the man beside you who was just as clueless. It only took a few hours to stumble your way to a window and see the vast expanse of space in front of you. In another life maybe you would have felt joyâperhaps hopeâbut now, all you saw was a dark coffin surrounding you with tiny buds of stars for decoration.Â
It was suffocating for something so boundless.Â
âIt seems likely,â you heard from beside you. You breathed in, grounding yourself back to the photo in your hands. âI mean, it would be weird if they stuck two strangers on a ship and never had them talk to one another beforehand.âÂ
You briefly looked over at the man beside you. His hair was unkept and tousled from his hands frequently running through it; his eyes were a vibrant blue hidden behind a set of wired glasses, a striking difference to the current world around you full of dreary grays and fluorescent whites. He wore his space suit up to his waist and a science pun shirt. The duality was almost comical.  Â
âRight,â you exhaled. âI guess I was just curious if we wereâŚâ you trailed off, unsure. You shrugged, looking over at the photo in his hands, which also showed himselfâalone. âFriends?â
Grace puffed out a breath of air, his shoulders dropping slightly with the release. He did that often, you noticed, especially while writing or fiddling with things on the ship. He glanced over at you briefly before looking forward at the two body bags in front of you. His eyes flicked between the deceased pilot, Yao, and engineer, Ilyukhina. He was quiet while committing their faces to memory, even despite their hallowed cheeks and the decomposing tint of their skin.Â
You stood abruptly, your legs wobbling slightly at the sudden movement, muscles creaking as they adjusted to being used. Grace jolted from beside you, but stumbled to a stand too.Â
âYao, I donât know if I knew you, I donât even know if we were friends,â you started, having no clue what to say. âBut Iâd like to think we were. Iâm sure we had a few good laughs before all this, maybe a few drinks,â you choked on a laugh that came out like a sob. You could feel the burning behind your nose building. Your hands dropped to your thighs, lost on what to do, what to say.Â
Grace cleared his throat. âWe mustâve known you,â he tried, âbut we just donât remember. You make a funny face in literally every picture.â He held up a photograph of Yao and what you both assumed was his son as he spoke.Â
He coughed down his own sadness as he carefully walked towards Yaoâs body, gently placing the photo under his hands. âYou must have been very smart and strongâŚâ
ââand brave,â you supplied as Grace drifted off. He nodded, âAnd brave.â
The air was thick and heavy between you two. The silence on this ship seemed to pierce your ears and settle into your lungs until it was hard to breathe in. You stuttered in another shaky breath.Â
âIlyukhina,â Grace started again, âFirst, I owe you three bags of vodka.âÂ
You tried to chuckle at his humor, but found yourself letting out another pained sob, your eyebrows scrunching and eyes blinking back a wall of tears. The room blurred, and you were almost thankful you could no longer see the details of the bodies in front of you.Â
âYou seem to have had a lot of friends. This picture of you, what looks like sneaking into the KremlinâŚisâŚlegendary.â He placed Ilyukhinaâs photo into her skeletal-like hands.Â
You spoke up in a whisper. âI hope we shared a few drinks together at some point. You seem like a great person to be around. I wish,â you struggled, âI wish you were still here.âÂ
You hated how hollow you sounded. For a eulogy, this sucked. It felt so impersonal. âYou were both very loved, and you deserve much more than this.â You choked out the tail end of that sentence, your shoulders hitching with each shaky breath.
The sorrow behind Graceâs eyes matched your own, his bluey hues blurring with unshed tears. He walked back to your side, his hand gently resting on your shoulder. It was slow, deliberate, as if he was telegraphing his movement to avoid startling you.Â
âWe will do our best to make sure that you donâtâŚâ he began, stopping as fought back his own tears that were threatening to fall. He used his other hand to wipe at his face. âYou know, that you didnâtâŚâ His hand fell harshly, his head and body shaking with the movement. He was just as worn down and hopeless as you felt. It was visible from a mile away. He cleared his throat and straightened, swallowing down his grief.Â
âWeâll do our best.â
ââ
The next few weeks blurred together. Grace was quiet these days, as were you. The harrowing reality of your lives and the passing of two crewmates left much to be processed. You were like ghosts, passing through each other without much thought. His mind was noticeably preoccupied with equations, questions, and maps, while yours wasâŚempty. Your brain seemed to disconnect not just your memories, but your ability to stay in the present and stay grounded into your body.Â
Even now, you could barely feel the marker between your fingertips without conscious effort. You stared blankly at the whiteboard on the desk in front of you. You heard the squeak of Graceâs marker, but it seemed distant despite being just across the room from you. You were supposed to be helping him, but it was hard when your body felt so heavy you couldnât even twitch your finger if you wanted to. Your vision was fuzzy at the edges, your peripherals falling out of view.Â
Distantly, you knew this wasnât good, but presently, you couldnât form a coherent thought outside of why canât I move my fingers. Your heart rate jumpedâwhy canât you move your body? You were starting to get scared. If your lungs werenât breathing on autopilot, youâd be hyperventilating by now. You wanted to breathe deeper, you wanted to scream, you wanted to throw this marker against the wallâ
Why couldnât you?
The white of the board in front of you covered your vision, lines of black smudging into blobs in front of your unfocused eyes. It was like a thick layer of glass separated you from the rest of the world. Everything was hazy, your body numb.Â
Why don't you know whatâs going on? You should know what was going on. You had a PhD for heavenâs sakeâwait, you had a PhD? A PhD in what? How could you forget 7 of the most grueling years of your life?
â...calculationsâŚ11.9 light-yearsâŚmeans weâre close toâokay?â
Words filtered through your ears and jumbled around in your brain, muddled by the cloud that had sunk into your body. More words floated past you. It would be useless to try and grab them and make sense of them. Your body had shut down, and despite your best efforts, you couldnât stop it.Â
You were scared.Â
You felt your body blink slowly, your eyelids heavy from the movement. It took conscious effort to keep your eyes from falling shut entirely, because if they did, what would keep you from succumbing to the darkness completely?Â
Why shouldnât you? It was all around you, all-consuming, constantly taunting you every time you walked past a window. What difference would it make if you let it take you?Â
ââhear me?â
You knew it was Grace. Itâs not like it could be anyone else. If you concentrated, you could hear the worry in his voice, hear the concern lacing his syllables. You felt your eyebrows scrunch together in the middle only to soften a second later as your muscles weighed down.Â
A blur of tan, red, and black ran past your visionâhis hand, his watch. ââscaring me,â you heard his voice say. I'm scaring me, too, you thought.Â
You tried scrunching your eyebrows again, tried twitching your finger, tried telling him anythingâsaying anything. It didnât work. You hand laid limp on the desk, your body barely sitting upright on its own.Â
You could hear the timbre of Graceâs voice in a steady stream but couldnât focus for long enough to make out what he was saying. He was speaking a lot, and fast; he tended to do that a lot when he was nervous. You felt guilty for scaring him; you wanted nothing more than to tell him you were okay, but at this point you think thatâd be a lie.Â
ââtouch you? I⌠say somethingâŚunderstandâ?â
His voice faded in and out, like a radio broadcast filtering through static. Then, your shoulders felt heavier, almost weighed down by something. You felt your body move slightly with the new weight, your head bobbing and hand titling. The gentle shaking did very little to dissipate the heaviness settling into your chest, nor the static filling your veins.Â
In a breath, the weight lifted, to be replaced by a set of hands on your cheeks. They were firm yet shaky, large enough to cover the sides of your face but gentle enough that you barely felt them. Your vision swirled until your view of whites turned into blues.Â
A pair of startled blue eyes met your gaze. Your eyes locked into his, outlining each shade of blue as they melted into one anotherâa dark ring of blue faded into vibrant, light hues, only to fade back into a set of black pupils. He wasnât wearing his glasses, undoubtedly hanging from his ears instead.Â
You breathed a little deeper as your vision sharpened just an inch. From your peripherals, you could see his mouth moving before your ears registered that he was speaking to you. You should be concerned that you could barely understand much of anything around you other than his eyes. Those eyes squinted again, his eyebrows scrunching at the movement.Â
ââcan you hear me?â
You caught the tail end of his last sentence.Â
I can hear you, you willed yourself to say. Frustration creeped into your skin when your lips didnât follow the command your brain had sent. You tapped your finger insteadâyou tapped your finger. He mustâve noticed the movement because his eyes flickered down to where your hand lay limp on the desk.Â
âIf you can hear me, can you tap your finger for me? Just tap it once for âyes.â Can you do that?â He kept speaking, repeating the same instruction to you while holding your gaze between the palms of his hands. You tapped your finger in response, the movement subtle and jerky, but there regardless.
He breathed out in relief, a smile covering his face that didnât quite reach his eyes yet. You watched as his eyes jumped between your finger and you.Â
âOkay! Thatâs great! Thatâs awesome, okay. You can hear me.â His ramblings of relief had the same effect on you. You were scared, but you felt safer knowing he was there, holding you together with his bare hands.Â
âOkay, okay, okay. Can you do one tap for âyesâ and two taps for ânoâ?â Your singular tap was met with another glowing smile in response.Â
âYouâre doing great,â he said, almost to himself as much as you. He was crouching down slightly to be eye-level with you. You distantly wondered if he was so good at this because of his past as a teacherâdid he comfort his students frequently just like this? Was he used to making himself shorter, rambling words of encouragement, and plastering on a smile even when things were obviously not okay?
âDo you know whatâs happening? Does this happen often to you?â he asked, only to backpaddle immediately after. âNevermind, stupid question. How would you even know if this has happened to you before when we barely remember anything?â
You stared at him. âRight, sorry. Do you know whatâs happening to you?â
You tapped twice. He nodded absent-mindedly, collecting his thoughts. You could see the gears shifted behind his eyes as he pieced together information. It was the same look he had every time you watched him calculate something you didnât understand or fiddle around in the lab with tools you barely knew the name of. You were a commander, not a scientist.
Grace frowned. Okay, Focus.Â
âI think I might, but I donât really know how to help.â He gnawed at his bottom lip as he thought. âTouch seemed to help.â His fingers shifted on your cheeks. âDid it help?â
You tapped once.Â
He nodded slowly, processing the new information. âIâm gonna squeeze your arms okay?â He waited for your affirmation before gently releasing his hands from your face. Your head bobbed slightly from not having his hands to prop you up, but you quickly jerked it back up, eyes blinking from the effort. Grace winced out a âsorryâ before squeezing the sides of your arms.Â
âCan you feel this?â
You nodded, your neck muscles having jolted awake moments prior. Grace seemed ecstatic at the new mode of communication, you might have even heard a âfantasticâ quietly fall from his lips. You squeezed your eyes shut and blinked them rapidly, trying to clear the fog from behind your eyes with little success.Â
âI know,â he said sympathetically while seeing your struggle, âbut youâre doing great. Just focus on me okay?â
You nodded slightly, trying desperately to not fade back into the distant calls of numbness. Tendrils of paralysis licked at your skin only for Graceâs hands to chase them away with each hard squeeze. His hands traveled down your arms until he reached your hands. You let him take the marker out from between your fingers and set it down somewhere outside your field of vision.Â
He grasped onto your hands and gave them a squeeze. Your nerves sparked back to life from the heat of his palms. âJust focus on this. Focus on my touch and nothing else.â
He loosened his grip. âCan you squeeze my hands?â He squeezed. âLike this.â
He waited as you slowly processed his words, searching your eyes for any sign of recognition. Your gaze fell to your clasped hands. Your stomach flipped but settled under the weight of your next breath. You willed your fingers to move, calling each nerve that Grace brought back to life. You squeezed his hands weakly, but he beamed at you as if you achieved something far greater.Â
âYou did it!â If anyone else had talked to you like this, you would have thought they were belittling, but Grace had a way of speaking that made you feel like you really were doing great things. You heard his genuine care and felt nothing but safe. âI just need you to come back to me completely, okay?â
Come back to me.Â
Your stomach flipped again, but you were too busy trying to squeeze his hands again that the feeling dispersed before you gave it a second thought. âJust keep squeezing my hands. Just like that.â
Moments passed of you squeezing his hands and him periodically snapping your attention back to him whenever you faded away too far. You swallowed, feeling the blood rush back into your veins and cool your skin.Â
âI think âm okay,â you mumbled, blinking away the last remnants of fog from your vision to look around the room. Your gaze swept over grayish-white panels and compartments until they landed back on Grace.Â
âYou sure?â he asked hesitantly, âYouâve been pretty out of it for awhile.â
You nodded slowly, like gravity weighed against each movement tenfold. âYea.â You creaked your legs back to life by moving them slightly against the stool you were on. âIâm back.â
Grace breathed out in relief. He pulled his hands away from you slowly, as if hesitating that without his touch to ground you, youâd fade away again. He wasnât entirely wrong, and you ached for his warmth again, but you willed yourself to stay, even if it pained you with the effort it took to keep on trying.Â
âI donât know what that was,â you said softly. âIâm sorry.âÂ
He pulled up a stool to sit beside you. âDonât apologize. Things like that are bound to happen given,â he cleared his throat, âour current situation.â
Your lip twitched upward in silent gratitude. You clenched your fists to get used to the feeling back in your hands again. âThank you, anyway. You didnât have to do all that.â
âI was happy to. Iâm sure youâd do the same for me.âÂ
You nodded, smiling over at him. âWithout hesitation.â
He breathed in deeply, his chest dramatically rising before falling back down again with his shoulders. âDissociation,â he said. âThatâs what that was. Iâve had a handful of students struggle with it.â
âWhat causes it?âÂ
âDepends on the person.â He shrugged, looking around the room as he spoke. âIt usually happens when your brain struggles to process overwhelming situations. Itâs your brainâs way of protecting you from stress or trauma that might be too difficult to process at the moment.â
âOh.âÂ
Grace peered over at your deflated form. âI donât blame you. This whole situation would be difficult for anyone to process. But at least now we know how to get you back.â
You met his gaze with a smile. âHopefully we wonât need that information again.â
âItâs okay if we do. Iâll be here to bring you back any time.â He extended his pinkie in a silent promise. You took it with your own and he let you hold onto it for a while, just letting you come back into your body with him by your side.

warnings: n/a. original | song insp | part one | previous | next (coming soon)
okay, so, in retrospect: this whole dance thing? not your best decision.
it means making sure both your apartment and your nice sweatpants are clean in an attempt to seem casually put together, like he doesnât already know better. like he hasn't already spent movie nights and study buddy lunches here, and seen how you organize your bookshelf.
it means realizing that youâve never broken in the nice shoes you bought a few months prior. y'know, the only pair you own that would work for an event this pretentious- er, nice- but that'll be fine, right?
it means jumping out of your skin when your doorbell rings right on time.
and it means that your heart performs an impressive backflip and sticks the landing only to dissolve into a melted puddle when you open the door and find him in a casual, soft t-shirt and sweatpants combo with a winter coat and warm smile to top it off. âhey.â
hey. which is a common ass word. that should mean nothing.
that should absolutely not make you want to smile like an idiot, because everyone says hey.
you sigh heavily instead, stepping aside to let him in. âc'mon, ballerina boy," you mutter, leaning heavily against the door. "letâs get this over with.â
âwhat, not looking forward to it?â he quips, with that smug, stupid little head tilt he does as he slips past you.
and, for some stupid reason, you hold his gaze the entire time. it's maybe, maybe two whole seconds, but it feels like longer, because he's⌠him.
like somebody took a romcom and gave it a pulse, and a nice smile, and pretty brown eyes.
you swing the door closed with a soft click, and resign yourself to ignoring all of that. âiâm not looking forward to stepping on your toes. literally.â
âdonât worry, i grabbed the thickest shoes i own,â he teases, slipping off his coat and setting his keys and phone on the coffee table you'd slid out of the way. âplenty of cushion.â
âthe dress shoes and sweatpants thing is an interesting statement, iâll give you that.â
âyouâre just jealous that i-â he glances pointedly at your own shoes and sweatpants as you stop a few feet back, that dumb little smile making your crisis much worse- âcan make it work.â
you roll your eyes, because what else is there to do when the handsome guy about to teach you to waltz is being a playful jerk? âyeah, well, some of us donât get to look good in everything.â
at least it earns you a sputter of laughter.
it's the little things, really.
-
âready to go?â
âready is a strong word, todd.â
âso grumpy. what, you afraid youâll learn something?â
it's not the learning you're afraid of, not that you'll tell him that.
for one thing, you really are nervous about stepping on his toes.
for another, you're afraid of breaking the comfortable, teasing rhythm you've found yourselves in. afraid that if you step into his orbit, the pull may truly be too strong to escape.
it's one thing to swallow butterflies and mask surges of affection with playful eyerolls from across the room, but up close and personal? more challenging, especially considering you're trying to hide from the protÊgÊ of the batman himself.
because he couldn't just be pretty and clever and sweet. no, he also has to be the most observant person you've ever met. why not?
âhey,â he calls, snapping you out of your thoughts. his smile's shifting from playful to reassuring, warmth seeping from him and threatening to melt you all over again. âc'mon, weâll go slow.â
he offers you his left hand, steady and confident.
you lay your right palm over it, trying not to focus on the feeling of warm, calloused skin, or the way his fingers squeeze your hand.
âthere we go. now your hand on my shoulder-â he nudges his right shoulder forward slightly, an open invitation you carefully take (against your better judgment)- âand mine on your waist. this good?â
âthis is good,â you respond, a little more honestly than he'll realize. yes, it's unnerving holding and being held by the guy that makes your heart do kickflips, but his hands are gentle despite the visible wear and tear and his movements are cautious and slow. doing what he can to make you comfortable.
which almost works, actually. because when he's not making you want to throttle him or kiss him stupid, he's⌠calming. which is why you're doing any of this.
it's one thing to have a handsome guy that likes to grin at you and go round-for-round with stupid teases. that would be an easier thing to ignore. no, this handsome guy grins and teases and is also a good friend that makes everything seem more manageable.
he nods a little, which jogs you out of your thoughts, and shifts slightly before clearing his throat. âokay. so hereâs where things get tricky.â
âoh, joy.â
âi figure iâll lead, because i actually know what iâm doing, so iâll start by stepping forward with my right foot like this-â he shifts forwards, watching his shoes and nudging the toe of yours gently- âand youâll step your left foot back to make room.â
âlike this?â
âyeah, thatâs good. step back onto the ball of your foot- yep, perfect. now,â he says, glancing up at you and nodding to his left, âother foot that way.â
you step sideways slowly, actually grateful to be focusing on the moves instead of him, and he mirrors your movement.
âjust like that. now just step in, bring your left foot right.â
you do, and hum a little curious sound to see if that was what he meant.
âthatâs it!â his gaze jumps back up to meet yours, a goofy hint of a smile on his face. âhalf a box step down. now we just gotta do it backwards.â
ââŚyouâre kidding, right?â
âuh⌠no. sorry.â
you sigh. he doesnât look sorry, and you point it out under your breath, ignoring the cute little laugh he gives you in return before guiding you into the reverse.
-
â-and he does this thing- iâve told you about the grumble thing before,â jason pauses, pointing his water bottle at you in a silent question and mimicking your nod before taking a sip and continuing. âso he does the grumble thing with his voice, right, trying to figure out who hired this guy and he must have had a death wish or something because he flips him- bruce- off.â
this is better. sitting on your couch and listening to him tell stories- ones he almost definitely shouldn't be telling you, but you're not about to stop him- this is much more familiar ground.
there's something sweet about it. mundane and calm. just watching him as he tells a family story. it's⌠cute.
âseriously?â
âdead serious. he flips him off and goes-â he raises his voice to a nasally, high tone- âyour mom hired me.â
you wince, somewhere in the middle of a startled laugh, just imagining having the guts required to say that to batman. sure, you've never actually seen the bat, but you've heard enough to picture an intimidatingly enormous, angry looking figure. âouch.â
âyeah, he had a bad time after that.â
âdid you ever find out who hired him?â
he pushes up off the couch, stretching towards the ceiling with a groan. ânot yet, but iâm sure bruceâll know by the time i get home. he said he had a lead this morning.â
âwell,â you follow suit, setting your water off to the side. âsounds like youâll have your work cut out for you tonight.â
âusually do,â he sighs. âalright, break timeâs over. back to ballroom bootcamp.â
you laugh again, quickly (weakly) covering it with a serious expression as he shoots you something you're sure is supposed to look chiding. âright. time to be serious.â
âmhm,â he mumbles dubiously, which only serves to make you giggle again. âyeah, you sound very serious.â
âyou just said ballroom bootcamp, jason. what did you expect?â
he rolls his eyes, and you pretend not to see the smile he hides behind another sip of water before closing his water bottle and tossing it onto the couch. âc'mere, letâs run through the basics one more time and then weâll call it a day, yeah?â
-
âwell,â he says, bringing his feet to a stand-still, but continuing to sway back and forth. âthereâs the basics.â
you want to complain. or at least make a joke about how the two of you describe basic differently.
you don't.
you smile, instead.
âi guess that wasnât awful.â
âno?â
ânope.â
and maybe that's a mistake, because the ghost of a smirk is on his face as he slows the little sway to a stop. âso does that mean i win?â
you roll your eyes and sigh again, his smugness becoming even more evident as you stall. âyouâre the worst, y'know that?â
âis that a yes?â
he's still holding you.
his hands are loose, sure, so you could pull away. probably should, if you're honest with yourself. but you don't, just yet, because he's leading this stupid dance.
he can end it.
âyes, jason,â you say, more resigned than you genuinely feel. because now his smirk is warmer, dipping into something more sincere than his usual ribbing, and you've never been very good at resisting his sincerity. âyou win.â
âiâm mature enough to spare you the âi told you soâ, but-â
even there, even being a know-it-all that's too proud of himself, he sounds warm. so you interject. âyou told me so?â
âa little.â
you huff a laugh, and he finally pulls his hand from your waist. so you take the queue and slide your hands off of him, swallowing the mild disappointment at the loss of warmth and turning to get some water instead.
âso,â he starts slowly, and if you didn't know better, you'd almost call his tone cautious. nervous. âdoes that mean youâll come?â
âwasnât that the deal?â you ask, taking a sip of water and glancing back.
âwell- i mean, yes, but-â
âyes," you cut him off gently, because jason todd stumbling over words can not possibly be good, and the last thing you want is for him to think that all of your grumbling was actually your attempt at wriggling out of this. "iâll be there.â
his grin comes back full force, dazzling and warm, the kind that you wish you could put in a bottle and open on bad days to make everything better. âcool.â
âcool?â
âcool.â
-
jason todd leaves your apartment two full hours after he arrived.
leaving you to drop onto your couch and stare at nothing, cheeks burning and water gripped loosely in your hand.
he gets back to the manor with a spring in his step he very much tries to hide.
so, obviously, bruce is in the foyer, the least convienent place possible. impossible to avoid without doubling back around to the mudroom instead of the front door.
bruce, the most infuriating man alive, takes one look at jason's poker face and smiles right into his stupid cup of tea.

jason needs a plan.
it was one thing to wing the banter at the thrift shop. you had all but set him up- intentionally or otherwise- and all he had to do was follow your lead.
almost like a dance, he supposes.
impulsively going back the next morning to buy two of the figurines was easy enough, too. (well, easy to choose one dressed in black for him. yours was a painstakingly slow process of choosing between two dressed in different shades of your favorite color, a process that took long enough that the shop owner actually came over to ask if he was alright.)
the tricky part is deciding what to do with yours now that he has it. it feels like too perfect an opportunity to pass up: win or lose, the stupid bet he'd bantered and teased his way into ends with something dangerously close to a traditional date.
so⌠technically he has multiple plans. ideas for plans. quasi-plans.
but he needs a plan plan.
it'll depend on you, he knows that.
the only one that can decide whether or not you successfully learn to dance is you. so, if the idea of being in the crowd of snobs flocking to wayne manor is too much, you have an easy way out. which he likes.
and as much as he would like- love,honestly- to have you there to make things more tolerable, it's not like jason can really complain about the idea of taking you out for ice cream. hell, it's one of his favorite things to do; sit in your favorite booth and playfully argue about something that doesn't matter or pretend not to notice when you drop ice cream on your shirt. (again.)
point is, either way, win or lose: perfect chance to find out if you feel the same way he does.
(assuming that he, the guy that jumps off buildings every night, doesn't chicken out. which⌠he might. the idea of fumbling the one place in his life where he gets to be a normal dude and be honest about his nightly activities is more than a little upsetting.)
so he needs a plan.
which is what he's turning over in his mind now, studying the table as he idly stirs the soup alfred made for dinner. it had also been on his mind on the drive to class, and during his lecture, and the ride home, and while sparring with tim- the last of which had given the kid the chance to punch him square in the jaw.
on the bright side, it had helped ease jasonâs concerns about him stepping into the world of bats and birds and homicidal criminals.
because it hurt.
(more than it should have, considering he could throw tim halfway across the cave.)
on the other hand, though, heâd gotten punched in the face.
and to make matters worse, alfred saw it, meaning it's bound to come back up eventually.
âmaster jason,â speak of the devil, âi did not intend for that to be a centerpiece. i believe eating would be a better use of your time than stirring it.â
he glances up with a sheepish smile, because he's lost track of how long he's been sitting here- which means it's been entirely too long. âsorry, alfred.â
the older man hums in acknowledgement, a warm sound that's almost always followed by curiosity. usually the kind that will make jason embarrass himself, just a little.âdistracted again, sir?â
âa little, i guess.â
âhistorically,â alfred says, walking forwards to stand opposite jason, across the table. âa busy mind has led to poor results in your nightly activities. would you care to voice your concerns, or shall i prepare the infirmary in advance?â
jason lets out a small huff of laughter, dropping his gaze back to his bowl. âiâm alright, thanks.â
âah, i see. a bruised ego as well as a jaw, hm?â
there it is.
but maybe that'll be it. a jab or two, and then dropping it.
yeah, right.
âi can take a punch, alfred," jason mutters without any real heat, taking an obedient bite of soup. delicious soup, actually. "even if itisfrom the kid.â
âthen perhaps,â alfred says, entirely too knowingly, âthis is related to your sudden interest in figurine collection?â
jason's spoon is set right back down in his bowl.
he's not going to say it out loud, but he legitimately has no idea how alfred knows about that. the figures are in a box in jason's closet, and alfred hadn't even been home when he'd brought them in.
âŚah. alfred hadn't been home. alfred had been out.
"you shop over there a lot?" jason asks dryly.
"shall i remind you how many buttons i must replace on a weekly basis, sir?"
the fabric store up the road from the thrift shop. of course. meaning that he'd probably seen jason staring up at a bunch of ceramics, like an idiot, which means that he can't even pass this off as a passing interest.
âi ever tell you that youâre where bruce gets the know-it-all thing?â he asks after a beat.
he earns an amused tilt of the head. âquite fair, sir. much like you gained master bruceâs tendency to let things consume you.â
âmaybe,â jason mutters, not quite as rueful as he was hoping for.
having alfred of all people compare him to bruce still feels like a compliment, even when it's for something jason could ring bruce's neck over.
even when it's followed by one of those patented alfred silences that get someone to admit to murder.
âhey, alfred?â
maybe plans are overhyped.
âyes, sir?â
screw it.
âyou think bruce would care if i brought a plus one to the gala?â

âthey make it look so easy.â
from anyone else, the hum of acknowledgement that fills the quiet air between you would sound distant.
from him, though? it sounds almost as cozy as the thrift shop you've wandered into, because jason's acknowledgement is usually curiosity in disguise.
you're half convinced that everything with him is curiosity in disguise.
with a little gesture up towards the several dozen dolls and figures frozen mid-dance on the shelves in front of you, you glance over at him. âdancing, i mean.â
âitâs not as hard as it seems,â he responds easily, voice just a little quieter than usual as he takes a hand out of his jacket pocket to pick up the nearest figure. he studies it, thumb tracing the details of the ceramic skirt as you try to keep your eyes from tracing his hand. âyou get the hang of it.â
you scoff lightly, rolling your eyes playfully away from him and back to the display. âyeah, sure, mister grace on two legs.â
âitâs like riding a bike.â
âand grace doesnât come in handy there either, huh?â
he reaches past you, setting the figure back on the shelf with one of those flat looks that doesn't actually make it to his eyes. the one that means you're successfully amusing him and he's not willing to give you the satisfaction of knowing it yet. âfine, it comes in handy. but this kind of thing-â he brings down a different figure, this one featuring two small, ceramic people in formal wear frozen mid-sway- âdoesnât take much. just a little practice.â
âmhm.â you shift to the side, eyes passing over the next batch of knick-knacks and landing on a set of dolls having a tea party. âsomehow i feel like you have an advantage, there.â
âwant to bet on it?â
that catches your attention again. âwhat?â
âi can teach you to dance,â he says, playful confidence coating the statement. easy, smooth, like it's nothing he hasn't done before. (has he done it before?) âand i can do it between now and bruceâs big benefit on the 20th."
"bullshit."
"if i canât, iâll buy us extra large sundaes from groverâs.â
you're looking him square in the pretty brown eyes as he doubles down, and you should definitely know better than to take him up on something like that.
one, you're not a dancer. two, being that close to the guy you definitely have feelings for is a terrible idea. (doubly so when he's, y'know, batman's kid. hiding anything from jason is a lot like trying to use glass for wrapping paper.) three, he never cocks his head like that unless he's got someone right where he wants them, and that innocent smile is bad news, too.
âooh⌠groverâs, huh? thatâs pretty high stakes, jay.â you quip anyway, tilting your head with a similarly playful smile. because even if you know better, you can't help but be a little curious about where he's going with this. âwhat do you get if you actually pull it off?â
âif i canâŚâhe trails off dramatically to look over the figurines again before meeting your eyes again. âyou come as my plus one to the gala. keep me from dying of boredom.â
âŚexcuse me?
you stare at him for a beat (which feels like six), trying to decide if you think he's serious or not.
"what?"
he shrugs.
âdonât you think you should ask bruce or something?" you ask, brows raised and heart faster than you're willing to acknowledge at the moment. "y'know, before you just start tossing around invitations to commoners?"
"heâd be happy to have you, trust me." he looks- and sounds- very much like he means that. it's wry, and quick, but genuine.
(which- okay, you'd probably be better company than the usual crowd that goes to these things, if even half the stories jason has told you are accurate. but it's still weird to hear.)
"besides, whatâs one more person in a crowd that size? bet he wouldnât even notice if i didnât tell him.â
you raise a brow.
âokay, he notices everything,â he admits, somehow twirling the figure in his palm- some little finger flick you don't really track, mostly focused on how much that figure will shatter if he messes up. âbut thatâs not the point.â
an amused hum escapes you as you consider the offer. ice cream with a friend, or a fancy wayne event spent watching jason pretend to be amused by muckety mucks. either way, you get free entertainment; but either way, you have to get through him teaching you to dance without falling on your face, swooning, or otherwise dying of proximity-based embarrassment.
you should say no. you should roll your eyes and tell him to shut up and nudge him towards the books or something.
you should treat this like the joke it could oh-so-easily be.
for some reason, you don't.
âyou'd better be ready to go all out on toppings when you lose.â
âoooor,â he drags the word out with a boyish grin you suspect could charm the city to a stop, catching the figure solidly in his palm (because of course he does). âwhen i win, you better be ready to put up with the sound of business men fake laughing about the weather for hours.â
your nose scrunches up, making him laugh.
another warm, cozy sound.
the pattern isnât lost on you- how warm and cozy he always manages to seem- but instead of unpacking the butterflies it sets loose in your stomach, you finally roll your eyes and sigh. âfine, deal.â
his grin returns, softer this time. âcool. so-â his eyes widen, darting past you- âwoah, now that is a jacket.â
he puts the figurine down and slides by you, barely brushing your shoulder as he passes and leaving a hint of his cologne in his wake: a burst of something floral wrapped in faint cedar and something else you canât quite identify.
as you trail after him, heart skipping erratically from the ridiculous conversation, you catch yourself hoping youâll get another chance to try.
he's wiggling out of his varsity-style gotham university jacket, gently draping it over a nearby rack before tugging on one made of a tan leather. you catch his eye in the mirror as he adjusts the collar, fingers as graceful and as easy as all of his stupid movements.
âwhat d'you think?â
you twirl a finger, and he follows the motion with a smooth spin, arms out to showcase the sleeves. upsettingly, it looks good. really good. just like everything else this bastard puts on. but it looks good like a costume looks good- there's something about it that just isn't right, and you can't really put it into words.
âhm⌠itâs nice, butâŚâ
he cocks his head again, eyes on your expression like he can read your mind. ânot me?â
ânot really, no.â
he clutches a hand to his chest, feigned hurt barely disguising that amusement you've spent the last few months trying not to chase. âwhat, donât think iâm cool enough for a leather jacket?â
âsorry, jason," you say, not even close to sounding sorry as you reach for his jacket and wave it playfully. "besides, this one brings out your eyes.â
a small laugh escapes him, and he shakes his head, shrugging the tan leather off. âthat was totally a priority when i bought it, too.â
â...looks good on you,â you offer, watching him pull his own jacket back on. watching the black and yellow fabric settle on shoulders you try not to think about too much.
âthat has to count for something.â he casts one more dreamy look at the leather jacket before turning his focus fully to you, his smile returning and reviving the butterflies that had so kindly died off. âso, about dance lessonsâŚâ

Dick feels guilty. His phone is open to your text chain. Your most recent text, sent just five minutes ago, is a photo with the message My drawers are so empty :( underneath. Itâs supposed to make him smile, he knows, but instead it just adds to the guilt thatâs been eating at him since that morning before his injury. You havenât said anything about it over the last two weeks, not in so many words, but he can tell you know somethingâs going on. Dick doesnât want you to ask. If you ask, heâll tell you, and heâs never shared this hurt with anyone. He doesnât want to lose you over it. Babs told him the other day that if he trusts you, he needs to be honest. You wonât run now, not this far in. Logically, Dick agrees. He just needs his brain to get with the program.
A nightmare jolts him awake. Dick squints at the clock. 5:32 am. Youâll be up for work in less than two hours. On a loop behind his eyes, he sees your apartment as his too, sees a comfortable, happy life. And then sees it explode in front of his eyes, gone the same way as Halyâs, his old apartment, BlĂźdhaven: up in smoke.Â
Heâs down in the batcave when you come by that evening, a little later than usual.Â
âHey my love, how are you doing?âÂ
Dick looks away from the case files heâd been reviewing. The wave of adoration hits him first. The wave of shame takes his breath away.Â
âBabs let me know that Leslie cleared you this morning, so I stopped and grabbed you these.â You hold up a paper box. Dick knows exactly whatâs in it. Thereâs a bakery by your house. They sell really good walnut brownies. Itâs the drop of water that breaks the dam.Â
âWhy?âÂ
A wrinkle your eyebrows forms in response to his tone. âWhy what?â
âWhy are you here? Why did you do that? Why have you brought me all the things you brought every single day? Just-why?â
âBecause I love you? And I want you to be comfortable. I donât understandââÂ
âBut I live here! My home is here. My stuff is all here.â Dick can almost see his words land.
âHoney,â you begin patiently, even when he can see the hurt in the twist of your mouth, âyour sweatpants were at my apartment. And your meds. And I know knee injuries are hard on you, so Iâve tried to be as patient as I can. But youâve been pushing me away and now youâre yelling at me because I want to support you?âÂ
âHave you considered I donât want your help?â The words are out of his mouth before he realizes theyâve ever been in his brain. Dick regrets them as soon as heâs processed them. He regrets them even further when he sees your expression shutter. âYou donât belong here,â he adds. It takes him a moment to realize that it sounds like he doesnât want you in his familyâs home rather than he thinks you deserve something better than he could ever give you. âWait, that is notââÂ
âDick,â you say. He rarely hears his full nickname in your voice anymore. Heâs never heard it sound like that. And he never wants to ever again. âI justâIâm gonna go home.âÂ
Home. With startling clarity, Dick realizes that he wants to go too. Because when he thinks home, he thinks of your smile, your arms around him, Alfred's to-go containers in your fridge. He thinks the drawers in your dresser full of his clothes, the trunk of his equipment in your closet, his favorite spot on the shoe rack.Â
The door to the batcave slides shut behind you. The brownie box sits abandoned on the table off to the side, the one Bruce always reminds them is the only acceptable place for crumbly food in the cave. Dick feels like his insides have been scooped out of him.Â
~
Youâre not mad at him â or at least it doesnât seem like it â and thatâs almost the worst part. He sends you a text the next morning, something saying he didnât mean it and hopes that youâll hear him out. Your response, sent a perfectly polite thirty minutes later, was I would appreciate some space for a couple of days. Dickâs heart jumps then sinks every time he gets a notification on his phone as if you donât have a unique vibration sequence, text tone, and ringtone. He knows, too, that youâre perfectly justified in wanting space.Â
âWhy didnât I listen to you?â Dick laments to Babs in the early morning, face buried in the pillow on her couch after his first night back on patrol.Â
âYou mean why were you so stupid? If only someone said that you should just talk to them.â She pauses, red hair tossed over her shoulder. âOh wait, I think I remember someone doing that.â
âIâll never ignore your advice again.âÂ
Barbara snorts. âI wonât hold my breath.âÂ
So Dick gives you space. Bruce switches him with Tim on the patrol schedule so heâs not passing your block. He wants to argue â the desire to even just check on you is beyond tempting â but even if you didnât see him, the guilt would eat him alive. He also thinks youâd somehow know. The patrol shift after that, Damian joins him, and Dick lets himself be distracted by the quality time with his brother. He doesnât get enough of that anymore.Â
Itâs day three that brings him to you.Â
âShit,â Dick hisses to himself, ducking around a corner. His right arm is wrapped around his ribs and his knee is throbbing. âOracle, thereâs a straggler. Heading towards canal street.â
âHood,â Barbraâs voice in his ear says, âdo you have eyes on him?â
âYeah, got him O.âÂ
Dick allows himself a sigh of relief and regrets it. Two bullets, even to a chest plate of kevlar, hurt.Â
â-wing? Nightwing?â
Dick toggles the speaker on his com. So maybe his brain bluescreened for a second. Thatâs probably not good. âYeah, Iâm here.âÂ
âIâm not even going to ask if youâre okay. Is there a safehouse nearby that you can get to?âÂ
âYeah,â Dick answers without thinking. He doesnât realize heâd been referring to your place until heâs standing at the end of the block. A quick check down his mental list reveals that the closest place to him that isnât your place is too far away for him right now. He canât grapple, not between his knee and broken ribs, and Bruce dropped him off earlier; he has no bike. Nightwingâs too vulnerable just standing around. Dick inhales as deep a breath as he can and continues on.Â
He knows you wonât turn him away. The thought is bittersweet.Â
It takes him longer than heâs comfortable with to travel the few flights up the fire escape. With multiple years of experience under his metaphorical belt, he can get through the window traps in two minutes â with his eyes closed. All Dick needs, though, is a code and magnetic key built into the elbow of his suit. The traps disarm.Â
Maneuvering himself through the window is difficult, but heâs done it in worse situations. When he straightens up, the first thing he sees is you.Â
âAre you okay?â
Dick blinks at you for a moment.Â
âWhat?â
âYouâre here, in uniform. And youâre standing weird.âÂ
âI-â he starts, then stops himself. Lying was what got him into the situation in the first place. âI took a couple bullets.âÂ
Your eyes go round. âWhat!?â
âThe kevlar stopped them. But thereâs probably at least one rib fractured.âÂ
Dick watches you process the words.Â
âOkay, we can work with that.â
He barely sees you move. Between one breath and the next youâre supporting him, leading him towards the bathroom. You donât say anything as you get his boots off then help him get out of the top of his suit. Itâs a weird sort of dissonance, Dick thinks. Things feel so off balance and you still know every bit of him, his suit, his face, better than you know the back of your own hand. âWho actually studies their hands?â You asked him once. âYou, I've made an effort to learn.â Â
You help him stand before relieving him of his uniform pants without fanfare. Itâs intimate â heâs left standing in just underwear â but the way you return right after with yet another pair of sweats he can fit a knee brace under is the thing that takes his breath away.Â
âOkay to move?â You murmur once youâve helped him into the sweatpants.Â
âYeah.â
For a moment, he thinks youâll lead him towards the couch. You donât. Instead, you grab the first aid kit from under the sink and help him to the bedroom. Your bedroom.Â
âWhat happened?â You ask as you prod gently at his ribs. Your fingers brush over an especially sensitive spot and Dick tenses. âSorry.âÂ
âUnexpected ambush. The deal wasnât supposed to be until next week so either someone got spooked or we had bad intel. I handled it mostly and then Jason picked up the one that got away.â You donât say anything, just hum a noise of assent before moving to clean a small cut on the back of his neck he didnât even realize he had. âAnd I didnât take a cycle out.â You nod, pulling an ace bandage and an ice pack out of the first aid kit. Dick takes a breath to remind you that wrapping broken ribs restricts breathing ability. You press the ice pack into his hands, push the right leg of his pants up to his thigh, and start to wrap his knee instead. He didnât even mention the knee to you.Â
âI guess you want my help now, huh,â you say to him. Dickâs breath freezes in his throat. âOr maybe itâs just that Iâm just convenient for you, I donât know.â
You take a deep breath in, then let it out slowly. âThen why did you say it?â You press the ice pack back up to his ribs. âHold that here.â He hadnât even realized heâd dropped it.Â
âI donât know.âÂ
âDonât lie to me. Please.â Dick swallows hard. He can feel the weight of your gaze on him. His eyes flick towards you then quickly away. He canât bring himself to meet your eyes. âI mean if you came here, you trust me at least a little bit. Or-or you think of my apartment as a place with some measure of safety. Or maybe Iâm completely wrong and this is just a nice little place for you to stop before moving on.âÂ
âNo, you-youâre more than that. IâŚâÂ
âThen what, Dick? Why? Because right now it feels like thatâs not true.â He can hear the tears in your voice, but he canât tell if you're crying, not through the blurriness of his own vision. âDickie,â you say, you beg, sitting down on the bed beside him âplease talk to me.âÂ
Dick breaks. He can barely feel the tears streaming down his face through the cracked ribs protesting every heaving breath he takes. Some part of his brain notes your hands straightening his posture, rubbing softly up and down his sternum. Dick doesnât know how long he fights to breathe, but he knows without a doubt, the way he knows in his bones that his family would catch him if he fell, that you were there with him the entire time.Â
When Dickâs brain comes back online, heâs leaning against you, his bare back against the material of your t-shirt. One of your hands is holding the ice pack against the worst of the bruising. The other is rubbing his chest. He focuses on that movement. Breathe in, out, in again. Heâs safe. He has you.Â
âI donât want to take you down with me.âÂ
The repetitive pattern stutters. Dickâs left hand wraps around yours, forcing the ice pack to fall onto the sheets.Â
âI donât understand.â You shift a little bit, hand untangling from his. Dickâs mouth goes dry. âHold on, I want to be facing you for this.â Oh, he realizes, that wasnât a rejection. âJust shift a littleâyeah, exactly.â A little bit of maneuvering later, Dick is propped up by pillows and leaning against the headboard. âComfortable?âÂ
Dick nods. His ribs are killing him. He thinks the fact that heâs about to spill one of his best-kept traumas feels worse.Â
âWhat do you mean âdonât want to take me down with youâ?âÂ
One of Dickâs hands twitches towards yours. You take it, attention tuned completely towards him.
âEverythingâŚeverything thatâs mine, I lose. Halyâs, my old apartment âapartment building â in BlĂźd, everything. And when youâŚIââ
âDick,â your voice is heavy with something he canât quite place. ââŚIâm not yours.âÂ
âNot-â He didnât even consider that interpretation. âNot you. I mean of course Iâm worried about losing you butâŚthe apartment. If I move in, itâs mine.âÂ
Realization dawns on your face.Â
âThatâs what you were uncomfortable about. I mentioned you moving in that one morning.âÂ
âYeah. Because everywhere I ever call my own goes up in smoke. Everything thatâs mine. Not my familyâs. Mine. And-and this would beâŚâ
âOurs.â
âYeah.âÂ
Dickâs eyes drift down to your entwined hands. You squeeze his. He squeezes back.Â
âHey,â you say. Dickâs vision is getting blurry again. âDickie, my love, please look at me.âÂ
You tip his chin up when he doesnât listen. As much as he searches them, Dick canât find anything besides love and understanding in your eyes.Â
âEvery single couple deals with loss. And you know what? They do it together, because itâs a partnership. I wantâand please hear the words Iâm saying for what they areâI want everything that comes from being your partner. And if something happens, we weather it together. Itâs worth it to me. I need you to understand that. Itâs worth it to keep your clothes in my dresser and your skincare on the bathroom sink. And to get to see you every night and know youâre safe. And even to host your family with their complete lack of boundaries because I love them all too.â Thereâs silence for a moment. âDid you-â
âYeah, I heard.â Dickâs voice is thick with tears. Yours is too, but your words are steady. Dick checks for tells and finds none. Youâre not lying to him. Intellectually, he knew you wouldnât. But traumatized brains donât work that way. âWhen I-when I said you didnât belong at the manor,â Dick sees you tense. âI meant that you deserve so much better than the life we all live.âÂ
You take a deep breath in. âDick, you donât get to decide my life for me. I know youâve said the same to various people. You said it to me too, when I first learned about Nightwing. That it was something you loved and you wouldnât trade your life for anything. Well I love you, and I wouldnât trade our life for anything. Okay?âÂ
Dick takes a breath in, then lets it out slowly. âOkay.âÂ
âAnd besides, you and me make a family too. My nameâs on the lease. So this place isnât yours. Itâs justâŚhome.âÂ
Dickâs face splits into a smile. âSo was that asking me to move in with you?âÂ
The corners of your lips twitch upwards, and itâs like the first rays of sun in Gotham after Mr. Freeze is back in Arkham. âI think this whole conversation was an elaborate me asking you to move in. You never gave me an answer though.âÂ
Dick tugs you towards him. You follow his lead, face close enough to his that he can count your eyelashes. âOkay.âÂ
A grin crosses your face. âYeah?âÂ
âYes.âÂ
You cup Dickâs face, pulling him into a kiss. âI love you.âÂ
âI love you too.âÂ
You press another kiss to his lips, temple, the bridge of his nose. âAnd you talk to me, okay? Weâre a team. And we communicate.âÂ
Dick huffs a short laugh. âI like a team that communicates.âÂ
âMe too.âÂ
~
Dick wakes to an empty bed, a set of painkillers on the end table, and half a dozen texts.Â
Jason got the perp, one from Barbra reads. Then, later on, You figure everything out?Â
The other few are from you.Â
You were dead asleep when I left. Take the painkillers. I will know if you donât. Not sure how, but I will.Â
We can stop at the manor for dinner in a couple days if you want and grab some of your stuff
But bed rest first, at least two days
See you when I get home. Love youÂ
Dick types a quick response to Babs, then to you. He washes the painkillers down with the cup of water beside them. Then he texts Bruce. Weâre stopping over for dinner next week. Dick doesnât bother to explain what he means by âwe.â
Later, when you get home and immediately fuss at him on being out of bed, Dick wouldnât change a thing. Even later than that, when you act as his human support pillow while the two of you watch a movie, Dick wouldnât change a thing.Â
When his siblings start taking the fact that he has an apartment as an excuse to bother him under the guise of casework, wellâŚwell, when he sees them treating you like a member of the family, when they start counting the apartment as a safe place to stop for medical help on patrol or a quiet space after school or just because they âwere in the neighborhood,â Dick absolutely would not change a thing.Â

âNooo, stay,â Dick whines as you silence your alarm and slide out of bed. Heâs too slow to grab your arm before youâve moved out of his grip, and you take pity on him by picking up his hand and pressing a kiss to it before you head towards the bathroom.Â
âYou know I canât, hun. Go back to sleep, itâs only seven.âÂ
Dick raises his voice so it can reach you even with his face half buried in his pillow. âI sleep better when youâre here, though.âÂ
âAnd youâll survive the next half hour without me.âÂ
Dick is squinting at the sliver of light leaking through your blackout curtains when you return to the bedroom. He must have forgotten to close them all the way when he got back from patrol last night.Â
âWant me to close the blinds?â You ask, pulling socks from your dresser drawer.Â
âNah, Iâm awake now.â Dick rolls out of bed and into his morning stretching routine. âIâll just nap later. And besides,â he says, reaching up to grab your wrist from where heâs splayed out on the floor, ânow I get more time with you.âÂ
âThat would be a lot more charming if there wasnât a drool stain on my pillow.â Youâre teasing even as you bend down, acquiescing to the kiss heâs demanding in not so many words. âHow longâs todayâs shift?âÂ
âIâm teaching two classes today so it starts at nine and ends at two.â Dick moves through his stretching routine as you brush your teeth and change into work clothes. âSo Iâll head back and take a nap before dinner and then head out to patrol.âÂ
You step out for a moment to turn on the coffee machine. âNapping here?âÂ
âYeah.âÂ
âMkay.âÂ
âHere is where all my favorite hoodies are.âÂ
You shrug, losing the fight to keep a smile off your face. âWonder why that is.âÂ
The coffee machine warms up and beeps to let you know. Dick moves on to standing stretches. You make your hair presentable.Â
âAh shit,â Dick laments from the bedroom. In the kitchen with you, the toaster oven returns your bagel, now a light brown. You quickly spread a topping over it and shove it into aluminum foil to eat in the car.Â
âWhat?â
âI left my work stuff at the manor. So Iâve got to drive all the way over there and then all the way to work. Which means Iâll be lucky if I get in on time.âÂ
âAny way I can make your trip easier?â You ask, watching Dick pour and chug a cup of coffee. Your bagel is deposited on top of your work bag so you can pull on your shoes. Thereâs tension in his shoulders now that wasnât there before and you hate it.Â
âNo, I don't think so. Unless you can control the traffic.â You cup his jaw, pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. âAlthough,â Dick continues, âthat does sound like something a supervillain would do. Please donât become a traffic-controlling supervillain.âÂ
You laugh, pressing another kiss to his temple before you pull away. Your bag is draped over your shoulder and you grab your keys and sunglasses before searching your pockets for your phone.Â
âYou know, it would probably be a lot easier ifââ Your pockets are empty. âWhereâ?â
âHere.â Dick tosses it to you.
âThanks. It would probably just be simpler for you to move in for real than for me to become a traffic-controlling supervillain.âÂ
Dickâs expression shutters. âYeah, maybe.âÂ
You want to ask him what's wrong. As if to disagree, your calendar alert buzzes 7:30 in your pocket. If you donât leave now, you are going to be late.Â
âOkay, Iâll see you later. Text me if you need anything before I get home, okay?âÂ
âYeah,â Dick muses distantly. âI will.âÂ
âLove you!âÂ
âLove you too.â
The door shuts with a click.
Dick isnât sleeping in your room when you get home. You donât even think heâs been back since the morning. His coffee mug is clean and on the drying rack. Upon a second glance, some of his stuff is missing from your bathroom sink.Â
Hey, you text. Did you end up napping at the manor?Â
Thereâs a twenty or so minute delay before your phone vibrates in your pocket.Â
Yeah, sorry, Dick replies. Bruce wanted to brief me on something for tonight.Â
No worries. Still up for dinner here?Â
The typing symbol appears and disappears a few times before you get a response.Â
Iâll probably just eat here. Donât want to fight the rush hour traffic
Yeah, makes sense, you reply even as disappointment settles in your chest. Text me if you need anything, okay? And be safe
Dickâs next response is much quicker. Anything for you ;)
You donât even try to suppress the butterflies. God, you love this man.Â
Dinner is a little lonelier without Dick, but he sends you what you gather is a pre-patrol selfie of himself, Cass, and a reluctant Jason. Theyâre all maskless and the photo shows only from their shoulders up, but you know the nightwing suit inside and out at this point. And you recognize Jasonâs jacket. Even so, thereâs a weird feeling niggling the back of your brain all night.  Â
With your intuition, youâre starting to think you should try gambling. As soon as you take your phone off of do not disturb at seven-thirty in the morning, youâre greeted with a dozen missed texts. You push down the panic that threatens to choke you and look at the situation rationally. If you only got text messages, everything is probably fine. Or at least not urgent. Dickâs calls are on an emergency bypass so, if something happens and your phone is on Do Not Disturb mode overnight, you can still be reached by anyone calling from his phone. And you know Barbara or even Tim would get ahold of you if Dickâs phone was out of the picture. You have the batcave number on bypass too, under âIn-lawsâ in your contacts. A middle of the night call has only happened twice in the last few years. Once was an extreme reaction to fear toxin. The other was a near fatal stab wound.Â
You scroll up to the top. Thereâs a message from Babs first. Whatever he tells you, she typed, it is a knee sprain. Then: Heâll be okay with a couple weeks of PT
I fucked up my bad knee, Dickâs first texts reads.Â
But not badlyÂ
Staying at the manor tonightÂ
Thereâs a gap of about a half hour until the next text.Â
Actually might stay for the couple weeks to make PT easierÂ
You donât have to rush over here, Alfredâs got it handledÂ
And Bruce is doing enough mothering for three peopleÂ
So you donât need to skip work or anything
But if you could bring me some of the sweats I keep in your apartment, those are the ones I wear braces with usually
I only have one pair here Â
Also I just realized I kind of spammed you but Iâm actually fineÂ
Donât panic
Love youÂ
Dickâs âdonât panicâ text kind of makes you smile, but the anxiety in your chest doesnât dissolve at all until you hear a response from Barbara as you head out the front door. Is he really okay? Should I call out sick? Â You asked.Â
Heâs okay, minor painkillers. Just walking with crutches for a couple days. No reason you should skip work Â
Okay, thank you. I appreciate you, you text back. In the parking garage, your car chirps a response to your key fob. You pull in a measured breath, closing your door behind you and engaging the door locks.Â
âHeâs fine. Iâll see him later.âÂ
~
The air in your apartment is stale when you return from work. You crack open a window and just breathe for a moment. Itâs not like Dick is always at your place when you get home. He has a job (and a night job) and technically lives in Bristol, but you couldnât shake the anxiety from that morning during your entire workday. And you didnât see him the night before. The smell of exhaust that pervades Gotham air brings you back to yourself.Â
âOkay, sweatpants, the book he was reading. Brace is in theâŚsecond drawer?â you mutter to yourself, puttering across your apartment. You change your clothes and pack an extra set (to potentially wear tomorrow if you stay the night at the manor) before adding your laptop and a couple other essentials to your bag.Â
Thereâs some amount of rush hour trafficâas you expected there to be when crossing central Gotham in the later afternoonâbut you get to Wayne Manor in just about forty minutes, including the five minutes it takes to get up the driveway and through the gate on the way in.Â
You donât have a key, but Alfred greets you at the door almost immediately. Last heâd seen Dick, your partner was in the main living room and, sure enough, heâs napping on the couch when you get there.Â
âHey, my love,â you murmur, letting your bag softly fall to the floor as you sink down on the couch beside him. Thereâs a new bruise blooming around the corner of Dickâs jaw and a scrape on the same cheek. His knee, iced and wrapped in a clunky brace, is elevated on a pillow. The sight makes your chest tighten. Dick has a lot of patrol injuries of various ages that act up on occasion; the whole family does. His right knee is the one that comes back to haunt him the most.Â
Still half asleep, Dick leans into the hand youâre running through his hair. He wakes slowly. You catalog every second, from the way his fingers twitch around the blanket someone must have draped across him after he fell asleep to the slow blinks you only see when heâs waking up somewhere he feels completely safe.
âMm hi,â Dick mumbles at you, voice soft and rough from sleep. âWhenâd you get here?âÂ
âJust now.â You donât stop running your fingers through his hair. âGood nap?âÂ
âMhm. This is the best nap couch.âÂ
âOh, so Iâve been told.âÂ
Dick shuffles a little, shifting to sit up. You only catch the flicker of pain that crosses his face because youâre searching for it.Â
âFeeling okay?âÂ
âBetter now that youâre here,â he grins.Â
You stop running your fingers through his hair to give a light squeeze to the back of his neck. âSap.âÂ
âIâm not ashamed.âÂ
You bend to kiss the smug smile off his face. âI know.âÂ
âHow was work?â Dick asks, leaning to press a kiss to your shoulder.Â
âSame old.âÂ
âYou sure? You look stressed.âÂ
You huff a laugh. âI was worried about you.âÂ
âOh.â Dick says. âYou donât have to be. Iâm good.âÂ
âYou, my dear, and your entire family, have painfully skewed standards for what âIâm goodâ means.â Your foot nudges the bag youâd left on the floor. âOh, I brought you a couple things. The sweats you wanted but also the brace you left at my place a few months back. And the book youâve been reading because I know thereâs at least one person in this huge house that will help me pin your butt to a bed or a couch for the next day. And then a couple other random things I thought youâd want.âÂ
You pass the bag to Dick when he makes a move to lean over and grab it, eyebrow raised in reprimand. Dickâs face contorts into an expression of pure innocence you donât believe for a second. For a moment, you wonder how on earth Bruce said no to this man when he was a kid.Â
âHey Iâve been looking for this!â Dick exclaims, holding up a Flash zip-up hoodie. You shrug.Â
âIt needed to be washed.â Your partner raises an eyebrow. âSo I wore it and then put it in the laundry. Your fault for leaving it behind.âÂ
âI wore it before patrol.âÂ
âYour point?âÂ
Dick rolls his eyes, smiling. âThank you.âÂ
âOf course. And I-â
âAre these your work clothes?âÂ
You blink at him for a second, not expecting the tone shift in his voice. âUh, yeah. I figured I should have them. In case I end up here too late to want to go home and just end up staying over.âÂ
âYou should go home.âÂ
âNow?â you ask, startled. âI just got here.âÂ
âNo, not now. But tonight. Getting to your job from here is an extra thirty minute drive in morning traffic.âÂ
âI know. But it would be worth it to be here with you tonight.âÂ
Dick doesnât answer, eyes dropping down to the blanket. You watch him for a moment then slowly move your hand across the blanket, fingers crawling over the fabric, before flipping it over. Dickâs hand slides comfortably into yours.Â
âAre you okay? I just-â
âIâm okay. Tired,â Dick offers. âAnd I should probably take another ibuprofen.âÂ
âAlright.â You squeeze his hand before letting go and standing up. âIâll get it for you. And put this back in the freezer.âÂ
âThanks.âÂ
âOf course.â
You take the melted ice pack and press a kiss to the top of his head before heading out of the room. Dickâs gaze is heavy on the back of your neck as you leave.Â
When you wake up in the morning, your bed is empty. Again. You knew it would be. Even so, that doesnât stop your half-asleep brain from reaching for the warmth that usually occupies the other side. The stark cold of the sheets wakes you up. You saw Dick yesterday and you already miss him. Itâs better for him to be at the manor for PT, you remind yourself. And he doesnât actually live here. Nevertheless, both truths sink like rocks in your chest.Â
Thereâs no one stretching on your rug, no second set of prescriptions on the bathroom counter, no extra pair of shoes sitting by the door. Dickâs mug sits still in the drying rack. You consider using it sometime around day three. It feels wrong. You put it back.Â
On day five, you canât find your phone. After searching, you find it sitting on the bathroom counter. Youâre fifteen minutes late to work.

(A/N): And we have reached the end! Thank you to everyone who has been following this story and I hope the ending was worth the wait. I also wrote at least some of this and the last chapter while delayed at a train station/on the train so any offhand references I make to either of those things are because of the haha.
And happy new year!

Jon blinked awake to Damian tapping him on the shoulder.Â
âHuh?âÂ
âWeâre almost there,â he said, nodding out the window. Outside, the scenery had changed from the green of Pennsylvania to the cloudy skyscraper city of Gotham. âAlfredâs meeting us at the station. Iâve already asked and heâll drive them home if theyâre comfortable.âÂ
Jon looked over at you. He couldnât remember if you or he had fallen asleep first, but he felt privileged that you did at all. Sure, some of it might have been the exhaustion of the last day, but he had a feeling you wouldnât have fallen asleep if you didnât trust them to be there and wake you up. Based on your complaints about the station there, there was no way you wanted to end up in Newark. Or New York.Â
Jon shook you gently. You opened your eyes, confused, then sat quickly upright.Â
âShit, I fell asleep? I didnât mean to.â
âIf itâs any consolation, so did I,â Jon shrugged.Â
âI didnât mean to miss the last hour,â you argued.Â
âLast hour of what?â Damian stood up in the aisle, pulling Jonâs carry-on out from where heâd tucked it in. Jon grabbed his backpack then helped you pull your suitcase upright.Â
âOfâthanks Jonâof time left with you guys.â You winced. Maybe that was too honest. Tugging your backpack over your shoulders, you followed Jon towards the exit at the end of the car. Damian stopped at the car door. You braced yourself with your suitcase to avoid toppling over as the train shuddered on the tracks. It really did feel like the plane turbulence from earlier.Â
âThis stop, Gotham Station,â the loudspeaker declared. One thing airplanes have going for them, you thought, better sound systems. The trainâs announcements were barely audible. âDoors will open on the right side of the train. Please watch your step.â Anything further was indecipherable under the burbling of the speaker.Â
âWait, why did you say the last hour?â Jon asked as the three of you took the escalator up to the station's main area.Â
âI have no idea how to contact you after this.â You pulled your suitcase over the lip of the escalator with a tug and continued on. Despite the amount of public transportation youâve taken, Damian seemed to know the station better than you. You followed him as he weaved through the groups of people sprinkled around the area, Jon right behind.Â
Damian stopped just outside a side entrance, and you moved around to his other side to avoid blocking the door. Jon followed.Â
âWe do all have phone numbers,â Damian suggested pulling out his phone. You assumed he was texting whoever was picking up him and Jon.Â
âOh, duh!âÂ
Jonâs excitement made you smile. The thought had crossed your mind earlier, but youâd dismissed it as a non-starter. You felt a little silly for that now.Â
Jonâs phone was already open to a new contact sheet when he handed it to you. You werenât sure if youâd ever actually given them your last name or if they remembered ever seeing it on your train ticket or boarding pass, but there was bound to be someone between Gotham and Metropolis that shared your first name, so you added it in anyway. Jon took it back from you and started typing.Â
Your phone buzzed straightaway. You pulled it out of your pocket, smiling.Â
âhi :)â the first message read. It was sent to you and a third number. Then âitâs jonâ
âHuh,â you mused, reading it. âIâve never seen anyone spell it like that before. Thatâs cool.â
You unlocked your phone, opened it to the group chat, and held it out to Damian.Â
âWould you mind? So I donât misspell your name?â
Damian muttered an assent and took it from you. He returned it with both contacts filled out.Â
âOh, great, thanks.â You chuckled at Jonâs contact. The name, instead of the Jon offered by the initial text, had been filled out as âJonathan Kent.â Damianâs name, you were proud to say, was spelled the way you imagined it was. The last name was a funny coincidence, you thought, considering he lived in Gotham.Â
âWayne?â You asked, about to make a teasing joke.Â
âLike Bruce Wayne, yes.â Damian said, carefully watching your reaction.Â
âLike âWayne Enterprisesâ Wayne?â He nodded. âHoly shit. Wow, okay, I didnât expect that. Wow.â You couldnât read the expression on his face. Some part of you wondered if he was waiting for you to make a comment about his money or his father.Â
âWhy did you take the train with me?â You asked instead. The concrete was rough beneath your shoes, a noticeable contrast from the smoothness of airport flooring. âYou could have easily had someone pick you up. Pick both of you up. So whyâ?âÂ
âBecause we wanted to,â Jon answered simply.Â
âI am not in the habit of making,â Damian hesitated, âfriends and then leaving them behind.âÂ
âYeah,â Your heart thudded loudly in your chest. âIâm glad we agree on that.âÂ
An unfamiliar black car pulled up beside you. You took a couple steps back. It was nice, but anything unfamiliar, nice or not, wasnât worth the risk.Â
Damian, on the other hand, moved in closer. He opened the passenger door and said something to the driver then turned back towards you.Â
âDo you want us to drop you off at home?â
You hesitated for a moment. Jon was looking hopefully at you. Damianâs âfriendsâ echoed in your head.Â
âYeah,â you agreed. âThat would be great.âÂ
Jonâs face split into a grin. The corner of Damianâs lips quirked up. There was some warm feeling in your chest at the fact that you caught it. You smiled back.Â
Alfred Pennyworth, as you learned his name was, stopped the car right outside of your building less than thirty minutes later.Â
âIâll get your suitcase,â Jon offered, hopping out of the car as you collected the rest of your things.Â
âThank you, Mr. Pennyworth.âÂ
âYou are very welcome,â he answered.Â
You shut the door behind you, now face to face with Jon.Â
âIs a hug okay?â You asked him. âIâm not sure if thatâs a thing you do but-â
Jon gives good hugs, you decided immediately. You could feel the weight and warmth of his arms where they circled your shoulders.Â
âIâll text you, okay?â He let go, hands moving to shove in his pockets. âIâll take a picture of Metropolis when I get home and send it.âÂ
You smiled at him; there was something concrete to look forward to. Damian came around the back of the car.Â
âYouâre not a hug person, right?â You asked him. He shrugged.Â
âOnly for certain people.âÂ
You nodded, oddly disappointed. Damian opened his arms.Â
âAre you sure?â You asked him. He nodded and you let him set the pace, tightening your grip only when he did. Damian was a good hugger too, you realized. You wondered if the older brother you heard of hours ago on the plane and Jon both had something to do with that.Â
âYou guys know where I live now,â you adjusted your backpack over your shoulder and pulled up the handle on your suitcase. âSo come visit sometime, okay?â Your gaze wandered over to Jon. âWell if youâre in town, I guess. Metropolis isnât exactly walking distance.âÂ
Jon chuckled.Â
âIâm here pretty often.â
Damian scoffed a quiet laugh.Â
âWe will. And keep in touch.â
âYeah,â you smiled. âYou guys too.â
You gave a final wave before heading into your building. A cloud of melancholy followed you inside. You ignored it, pulling dirty clothes from your suitcase to toss in the hamper before heading to take a shower.Â
Hair dripping but finally clean, you flopped onto your bed, reaching for your phone. Three messages were waiting for you. You answered the one from your parent, asking if youâd gotten home safe. The second was an email. Youâd deal with that later, after you got some sleep. The third was a picture from Damian.Â
He didnât even make it through my shower, the attached message read. On your screen, Jon was lying on a couch underneath Damianâs large dog. He was fast asleep.Â
You laughed and replied, then set your phone down. A nap would definitely throw off your sleep schedule, you knew, but Gotham was nocturnal anyway. You slept the afternoon away.

(A/N): Before anyone protests, I headcanon the Wayne family as celebrating both Jewish holidays like Yom Kippur and Hanukkah as well as Christmas and Easter because yes, Bruce is ethnically Jewish (though may have done Christmas as well) but Dick/Jason/Tim/Steph would have likely celebrated Christmas. So they do both.
Anyway, this is a christmas gift for @glorified-red and literally the 5th take on this fic bc they first said Hallmark movie, then damijon hallmark movie, then whump. And then it took me three tries to get something I was close to happy with so I hope you enjoy. This ended up being a mix of domestic fluff and h/c.

âTell me again why Santa doesnât bring us gifts if heâs real. Like our dads have met him. And he still doesnât bring us presents,â Jon lamented from the couch, bundled up in four blankets.Â
From your spot on the floor by the tree, you looked up, an eyebrow raised in amusement. âBecause weâre not kids anymore? And how do you know Santa ever brought us gifts?âÂ
âPerhaps,â Damian added, passing Jon a cup of hot chocolate. He placed a second cup on the coffee table and lifted one to his lips. âHe only brought gifts to people to make a point. I never received any from him as a child but father has gotten many over the years.âÂ
Jon listed to the side, head landing on Damianâs shoulder. âI think thatâs worse.â
For the first time in a while, Jon felt Damianâs huff of laughter more than he heard it. Your small chuckle was similarly inaudible. Jon hated solar flaring. Not only was it a pain to deal with for the day and changeâone could argue he got either lucky or really unlucky by solar flaring the morning of Christmas Eveâbut it always threw his senses out of whack as they trickled back in. And, with the gray skies of Gothamâs winter, Jon was expecting it to be even weirder than usual. It was worth it though, to him, in order to spend the day itself with his partners. It was enough that the Kent family Christmas Eve was ruined by Lex Luthor. He wasnât going to let his Christmas day be ruined too.Â
âIâm sorry, mi sol,â you offered with a shrug and a smile. Jon met your grin with his own. A full-body shiver wracked his frame. Your gaze turned concerned. âYou okay?âÂ
âYeah,â Jon agreed, âJust chilly.â Damianâs arm wrapped further around Jon, pulling their sides flush against each other. Jon maneuvered the blankets away to soak in his warmth.Â
âAmeli, we can turn the heat up,â Damian offered.Â
âNope,â Jon argued, nuzzling into Damianâs neck. âThis is good.â Damianâs resulting huff of air teased at the hair on the top of Jonâs head.Â
âMi luna?â You asked from the floor. Damian turned to look at you. Jon followed, eyes traveling over the mound of presents arranged under the tree. There was a pile around the back of the tree against the wall for Damianâs family (Jon still needed to give Dick his gift from the Hanukkah celebration a couple weeks ago. The blue dreidel paper was obvious against the sea of brown, red, and green wrapping paper.), and a smaller one for yours. The empty gap left behind after the Kent Christmas was already filled in with a large box Jon was like ninety percent sure was a new easel for Damian. You ordered it, not him, but Jon couldnât think of anything else on any of your lists that was even close to that size. âCan you hand me that please?â You gestured to a precarious stack on the coffee table.Â
Damian acquiesced, passing over a teetering pile of vaguely book-shaped items. Who those were for was anyoneâs guess. Jon was grateful Alfred had helped you and him pay for some of the gifts for Damian. Looking at the gift tags, it otherwise would have been horribly uneven. And Damian himself wouldnât have minded, Jon knew, but you and him would have been upset about it anyway. He deserves the world, your rohi. Damian pulled out his phone and snapped a picture of you, still arranging presents under the tree. He showed it quickly to Jon before texting it to him immediately.Â
âThis look okay?â You asked, peeking out from behind the tree. Jon looked it over. He wasnât sure what he was looking for exactly, but he also wasnât exactly the reigning opinion on artistic presentation.Â
âIt looks fine, hayatiâ Damian said, eyes still trained on his phone. You narrowed your eyes at him.Â
âYou didn't even look.âÂ
Damian turned to look at you. âBecause I knew it looked fine, beloved.â His eyes scanned the presents. âAnd it does.âÂ
You shook your head at him, exasperated, before conceding and sitting heavily on the couch. Scooching in, you nearly pressed up against Jonâs other side.Â
âCome closer,â He whined, untangling a hand from the blankets to grab yours. âYouâre warm.âÂ
Jon could feel the look exchanged over his head.Â
âIâm not that warm,â you argued even as you grabbed the TV remote from the coffee table and arranged the blankets so that you could fit underneath. âYouâre just cold.âÂ
Jon shrugged. The hand that wasnât holding yours reached underneath Damianâs shirt and he swore, grabbing Jonâs wrist to keep its chill away. Another look passed over Jonâs head. He wondered sometimes if the two of you were aware he knew what you were doing and just didnât care. Probably.Â
âAre you sure youâre okay, amorcito?â You asked. Jon shrugged.Â
âItâs cold outside and Iâm human but otherwise yeah. I have you two,â he added smugly. Damianâs playful shoulder hit came at the same time as your muttered âsap.â Jon grinned. âSo because Iâm sickâsort ofâI get to pick the movie. And weâre watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town.â Despite the protests on both sides, the movie was playing before Damian could even get up to turn the lights off. To the side of the couch, the lights on the Christmas tree bathed the room in a soft white glow.Â
~
Jon awoke to a cold bed. On a good day, heâd wake with the sunâor whenever it wormed its way through the bedroomâs black out curtainsâor to an international emergency. Okay, not that the emergency was good, just that he was feeling good enough to know it was happening. On a bad day, all bets were off. Jon stuck his hand out of the covers, searching blindly for his phone. After a moment of finding nothing but the wood of the end table, the scratchiness of the sheets was unignorable and he gave up, flinging back the covers to get out of bed. Hanging over the side of the dresser was a dark red sweatshirt. Jon grabbed it and tugged it on, rubbing his arms to get the lingering echo of the sheets off his skin. His off kilter super hearing zeroed in on the crooning of Michael BublĂŠ before zooming back out into the general background noise coming from the kitchen. Jon winced, squaring his shoulders. That was a bad sign. But it was Christmas; heâd be fine.Â
A quick squint at his phone told Jon that it was just after noon. No wonder the bed was cold. Jon shivered, then grabbed a pair of your fuzzy socks before opening the bedroom door.Â
The smell of cinnamon and chocolate coming from the kitchen was pleasant rather than unbearable. Jon let himself breathe it in as he approached quietly. He didnât even notice you behind himâthough that was often true of an average dayâbefore there were arms around his waist and a head on his shoulder. He let himself lean back into the warmth of you.Â
âMerry Christmas, mi amor. How are you feeling?â you inquired. Hot breath ghosted across his neck. Jon shrugged.Â
âFine. Excited for today.â He spun around to face you, eyes taking in your christmas pj pants and sweater with a Robin logo. Over your shoulder, Jon could see flashes of blue, likely Damianâs nightwing sweatshirt. âMerry Christmas,â he added, tucking his nose into the spot just underneath your ear for just a moment. No matter what his super senses were like, he took comfort in the smell of the two of you. A hand weaved through his hair, a kiss pressed to the top of his head. Jon pulled back just enough to give you a peck on the lips before being spun around into a kiss from Damian.Â
âMerry Christmas, my heart,â Jon muttered, pressing a second lingering kiss to Damianâs jawline. A steady heartbeat pulsed under his fingers, wrapped around Damianâs wrist.Â
âGood morning,â Damian said, wrapping an arm around Jon to keep him close. Jon blindly reached out and a second calloused hand found his. A second warm body curled around him. He missed your heartbeatsâ song in his ears, but Damianâs pounding steadily under his ear and yours fluttering underneath his fingertips was good enough for right then. âAre you alright?â Damian continued. âItâs late.â His voice was echoey underneath Jonâs ear and Jon flinched instinctively. The two of you reacted immediately, pulling back.Â
âJon?â you asked, voice laced with concern.Â
âYeah,â he managed. âIâm mostly good. About as expected, you know?â Jon offered up a smile. By the looks on your faces, it didnât do as much reassurance as heâd hoped. âIâm sorry I slept so late.âÂ
âDonât apologize,â Damian argued. âThere is no reason to.âÂ
âYeah, I guess,â Jon sighed.Â
âHow are you feeling about breakfast, mi sol?â You asked, tangling your fingers with his.Â
âSounds good,â Jon agreed.Â
~
âOh yeah I should definitely send Dick a text to thank him. And also say Merry Christmas,â Jon said, flopping down on the couch after breakfast. With his partners looking happy, Christmas music in the background, and a breakfast of vegan pancakes in his stomach, Jon could almost forget about the buzzing under his skin.Â
âTt,â Damian scoffed. âHe would have swapped with me anyway. Gordon and Father are both working tonight so it was pointless for him to have the evening off.â
Jon shrugged. âStill, doesnât hurt to say thanks.âÂ
âSay hi from me too,â you yelled over the running kitchen sink. After a moment more, the water shut off and Jon released a silent sigh at the absence of an irritating bit of noise. He was lucky the x-ray vision hadnât started acting up. Not only was that like the antithesis of Christmas presents (his mom kept presents out of the house or in a lead box until morning for that very reason), but it was also a huge pain and the hardest to hide. Screwy touch and hearing was more than enough. Dishware clanked around in the kitchen as Damian sat beside Jon on the couch.Â
âNo change?â He asked, reaching for a Nightwing mug of cider on the coffee table.Â
Jon shrugged. âNope, nothing yet.â Damian narrowed his eyes and Jon attempted to start coming up with excuses. At the very least, he could probably get Damian to leave it alone until after gifts. Less so if you noticed too and started teaming up on him.Â
âReady for presents?â You asked, sitting down on the other side of Damian. You raised the untouched Superman mug to your lips, eyes scanning over Jon.Â
âYes!â Jon butt in before you could say anything. âLetâs do it.âÂ
You and Damian exchanged a look. On the floor below, the elevator dinged, releasing a family with a horde of kids. âOkay,â you conceded, standing to grab the first load of presents.
In the apartment directly underneath, the front door squealed open. A load of presents was slammed down on the floor beside him. Three kids squealed âgramma!â in unison. Jonâs hoodie was all of the sudden suffocating him.Â
Jon jumped up and yanked the sweatshirt over his head, pawing the sleeves off before yanking his socks off too. He didnât care where they ended up. His hands went up to press against his ears. Stumbling over his own feet, Jon meandered backwards until his back slammed into a wall and then slid down, knees up and head with ears still covered in between them. Sounds zoomed in and out. All of the sudden, he could hear Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer playing eight floors down, then A Christmas Carol on someoneâs TV across the street. Focus! Jon yelled at himself through all the noise. One steady beat came into focus, then another.Â
Until there was a soft item brushing his feet, Jon didnât realize he had company. A steady beat pulsed in his ears, too loud even for its familiarity. He pulled the blanket close. Something plastic nudged his shoulder and Jon grabbed it instinctively, slamming special-made headphones over his ears. The sounds faded down into something manageable. Jon took a deep breath. And then another. He didnât need to hear to know that the two of you were there. When he reached out tentatively with his sense of smell, the usual wave of cinnamon-vanilla-brown sugar-clove and somethings just the two of you tempered by pine and peppermint was comforting rather than overwhelming. Jon let it wash over him, clutching the soft weighted blanket to his chest.Â
When he cracked his eyes open, two blurs blinked into focus as his partners, leaning against the back of the couch and hands linked. Damianâs head rested on your shoulder, one of your hands tangled in his hair. Jon noticed as soon as Damian saw he was up. He almost slammed his head into your chin as he shot up and Jon huffed a laugh. Â
âAmeli?â Damian asked. Your eyes locked onto Jonâs.Â
âYou guys shouldnât sit on the floor,â Jon responded. âItâs bad for your backs.â
You offered Jon a hand, ignoring his remark completely. Jonâs chest ached. If you werenât willing to banter, heâd scared you. âHow are you feeling?â  Â
Jon took the hand and stood, adjusting the headphones so they stayed on his head. He tossed the blanket over his shoulder and reached his other hand out towards Damian before tugging the both of you up and towards the couch.Â
âIâm okay,â Jon reassured you, sitting down on the couch. âI promise.â When neither of you moved, he tugged you both down on top of him, interrupting the bat-assessment written all over Damianâs face. Â
âPromise like this morning?â Damian argued. Jon winced.Â
âOkay, yeah maybe I shouldnât haveââ
âBeen a self-sacrificial dumbass as if we donât a) know you and b) want you to talk to us?â You cut in. Jon could read the hurt underneath the anger clear as day. His fingers brushed over two sets of knuckles, one scarred from years of fighting without protective gear, the other dry from the winter air.Â
âI know. I just wanted today to be a good day, you know? We never get uninterrupted holidays.â Jon resisted the urge to pull his hands away from yours and curl into himself. The two burning gazes on him were ones of love and concern, though, not judgment.Â
âAnd for some reason you think accommodating you makes the day worse, why?â Damian asked. Jon didnât have an answer.Â
âWe love you, Jon. Eres nuestro pareja. We picked âpartnersâ for a reason, yeah?â You squeezed his hand in yours.Â
âYeah,â he agreed, head dropping to your shoulder. Silence was heavy in the room for a moment.Â
âYou choose what we do next,â Damian stated, tugging the blacket from its bundled blob to instead cover you and Jon.Â
Jon moved from your shoulder to halfway on top of Damian, tugging you on top of him. âYou guys are going to squish me in between you while we watch a movie and then we can do presents?âÂ
You shot him a wicked smile. Jon shrieked as Damian pulled him bodily half on top of him along the couch, cut off when you landed nearly on top of Jon.Â
âGood?â You asked. Jon let himself sink into Damian, arms coming up to wrap around your waist.Â
âYeah,â he said. âGood.â
Damian grabbed the remote. âWeâre not watching Elf.â
(A/N): So I have literally drafted the post for the last chapter in order to get it out by the end of the year. It will happen, I swear.

The baggage claim area was packed when they arrived. Damian scanned the crowd quickly once, then once more. He knew you had a bag. You had to be there. A large man elbowed his way through the crowd and Damian had to restrain himself from forcibly removing the man from his vicinity.Â
âAnything?â Jon asked from beside him. Damian opened his mouth to say no. His eye caught on movement in his periphery.Â
âThere.âÂ
You were off to the side, most likely trying to avoid getting trampled by the crowd. Your arms were wrapped tightly around yourself, eyes scanning the moving conveyor belt despite its lack of suitcases.Â
âHi,â Jon started as they came up behind you. You let out a startled exclamation, nearly tripping over your feet in an effort to see who was talking to you. Â
Damian winced internally. He figured youâd hear the rattle of their carry-on bags. In hindsight, everyone was carrying some form of luggage. They were standing at the baggage claim.Â
âHi,â You said. âWhat are you doing here? I thought you left.âÂ
Damianâs heart tweaked in his chest. He heard what you didnât say: I thought you left me.
âI mean I know you donât have suitcases,â you rambled on, âso thereâs literally no reason-â
âWe were looking for you,â Jon interjected. âEven if you didnât want to see us again, we could have at least said goodbye.â He was hurt, Damian realized, getting defensive.
âNo no thatâs not what I meant.â Your voice was frantic. âI just-I know you donât have large bags and you have each other and probably some better way to get home than finding a last-minute train so when I didnât see you, I figured youâd justâŚâ The sentence trailed off in a shrug.Â
âBut weâre here,â Damian argued. âAnd Jon and I were already planning to take public transport.âÂ
Your eyes searched beside Jonâs shoulder, scanning the suitcases coming down the conveyor belt.Â
âDo you need help getting your bag?â Jon asked, following your gaze.Â
âNo, I got it. Meet you back here when I get it?âÂ
Damian nodded.Â
âDo you want to leave your backpack here?âÂ
He could almost see you mentally combing through the pros and cons.Â
âIf you leave with my stuff,â you began lightheartedly. Damian could hear the underlying anxiety in your voice. âIâm going to be really pissed off.âÂ
You handed the bag to Jon and disappeared into the crowd around the belt.Â
âDo they think we would?â Jon asked Damian. Damian resisted the urge to reach up and smooth the wrinkle in between his eyebrows. âJust leave, that is? I mean if they knew who we were-â
âWhatâs to stop them from thinking theyâre an obligation then either?âÂ
Jon sighed, pouting. Damian bit back a smile. It was adorable.
âYouâre right. I hate it when you're right. It happens way too often.âÂ
A huff of laughter escaped Damian. A moment of comfortable silence lingered in the air, interrupted by you pushing through the crowd with a suitcase.Â
âOkay this is it,â you declared, taking your backpack back from Jon. Your relief was unmistakable. âSo the train stop that gets us to the main station is in terminal A, I think. Are you guys taking a train back too?â Jon shrugged, glancing at Damian.
âWe hadnât actually gotten that far yet.â
âIf we need to catch a local train, we should head that way now,â Damian suggested. âWeâll figure out the rest on the way.â
âSo what train are you taking?â Jon asked halfway to the airport train platform.Â
âUhh wait one sec.â You pulled out your phone, tapped the screen a couple times, then handed it to him. âHere. Thatâs my ticket.â
Jon turned the screenâopen on the Amtrak appâtowards Damian. He was already pulling out his phone. Damian dipped his head towards the screen, scanning the list of trains for the correct one before purchasing two tickets. Bruceâs credit card auto-filled into the payment information. Damian doubted his father would even notice.Â
âAlright, we all have tickets for the 119 train to Gotham.â Jon handed your phone back and you shoved into your pocket.Â
âNow we just have to get there.â
~
You didnât think Jon had ever been in a train station before. Or at least not this one. Heâd spent the majority of the half hour youâd all been sitting in the station alternating between talking to either you or Damian or looking around and asking you questions about your previous experiences on trains.Â
âYou have a terrible track record with transportation,â he frowned at you after you recounted a two-hour train delay. It had pushed your arrival time at home until past two in the morning. The face he made was really sweet. âYeah I kinda do,â you laughed, shifting on the wooden bench.
Train stations overall, you found, were less overfilled and more comfortable than the airport, this one especially. You wouldnât want to get delayed at Gotham Station (you knew that from experience too), but this station was much nicer. Less so at midnight, but that had more to do with your exhaustion at that time than the station. Damian, on your other side, was typing on his phone. Heâd gotten up a little while before to make a call then came back and declared heâd sorted out who was picking him and Jon up once they arrived in Gotham.Â
You glanced up at the big screen in front of you once again. This time, your gate and track number were up on the board.Â
âGate seven, track eight,â you read aloud. Beside you, Damianâs eyes snapped up to the board. Jon turned to look at you.Â
âWhat?â You pointed at the screen.Â
âOur gate and track number. We should go now before the line gets too huge so we can get seats not already occupied.âÂ
Damian nodded, collecting his belongings. Jon followed, pulling his jacket back on before flashing you a smile.Â
âAlright, letâs go.âÂ
You were quickly vindicated in your decision. The boarding line stretched all the way out towards the restrooms at the back of the station. When you got on, the train wasnât empty, but it was close enough. With an origin in Baltimore and an end stop of New York, Philadelphia was one of the larger stops on the trainâs path. You dropped into the first empty seat you saw with a likewise empty seat behind it, shoving your suitcase into the limited space allotted to legroom. It didnât fit, but you really didnât want to check your bag. Again.
Damian dropped into the seat behind you. Jon sat down next to you.Â
âWhat-?â you asked, confused. âDonât you want to sit together?â
âWe are,â Jon shrugged. He leaned towards you, voice lowered. âBesides, Damian could probably use an hour not squished in between a whole bunch of people.âÂ
You turned around just enough to see Damian shove both his and Jonâs carry-ons onto the window seat and sink down heavily into the aisle seat.Â
âThatâs smart; I do it too,â you approved. âNo one wants to take the window seat with a stranger.â Damian offered you a nod in exchange. He looked the way you felt after hours upon hours spent with people you werenât comfortable with. That is to say, socially exhausted.Â
You turned back around, crossing your legs so that you could sit somewhat comfortably even with a huge suitcase taking up all your legroom.Â
âTurn it sideways,â Jon suggested. âSo itâs not so tall.âÂ
âBut itâll take your legroom,â you protested. Jon shrugged and did it anyway, maneuvering his backpack to rest on top of it. You followed suit, shifting your seating position to accommodate the new space. The fabric of your pants had no traction on the smooth material of the train seats.

Soon apparently meant thirty minutes. The planeâs landing gear hit the tarmac hard. The few shrieks were outweighed by the many sighs of relief, you own included. Jon yanked the window open, squinting. The view of the tarmac went from blurred to clear in the morning sunlight as the plane slowed.Â
âTt, finally. Though Philadelphia would not have been my first choice as a welcome back to the East Coast.â Damian pulled his gaze from the window, bending down to resecure the closures on his backpack. Jonâs eyes stayed glued to the window.Â
âAre all plane landings this rough?â
âYeah, usually,â you replied. âBut it means weâre on the ground, so I donât mind.âÂ
âWelcome to Philadelphia, ladies and gentlemen. The local time is 9:32 am and the temperature is 47 degrees Fahrenheit. Apologizes for the early landing but glad we all made it safe and sound. Remember to stop at the help desk if you do need to get your luggage routed to baggage claim or if you would like to take a voucher and find another method of transportation to Gotham. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation and thank you for flying with us.â
âIf I ever see the inside of a plane again, it will be too soon,â Jon whined. You turned to see him drop his head on Damianâs shoulder.
âFlying commercial is both unpleasant and inefficient, I concur.â Damian squinted at the standstill line forming at the front of the plane. You stayed carefully silent. The two future trips you had in your calendar burned in the back of your mind.Â
âBut hey,â Jon sat up. âAt least we met you!â
You chuckled, maneuvering up and out of your seat into the line of departing passengers before swinging your backpack over your shoulder.Â
âYeah,â A bittersweet wave of emotion gripped your heart. âIt would have sucked so much more without you guys.â Â
The deplaning of the flight was the worst youâd ever been a part of. Between panic and desire to leave, everyone was sloppy and on a short fuse. You nearly got whacked in the head with a carry-on bag trying to stand up. You did get elbowed trying to move forwards in the line.  Â
There was no Damian and Jon right behind you this time when you turned around after finally making your way into the airport. The spike of disappointment that drove through your chest caught you off guard. I knew this was going to happen, you reminded yourself. It didnât make the ache in your chest go away.
âHi,â you greeted the help desk employee. âIâd like to get my bag routed to baggage claim.â The required materialsâyour boarding pass, baggage tag receipt, and driverâs licenseâwerenât hard to produce. In just a few minutes, you were given a new receipt and an instruction to check screens for the baggage claim. The guaranteed âvoucherâ was to be later emailed, added to your airline account. You stepped off to the side, shoving the new receipt in your pocket. Theyâre tall, you figured. Youâd see them if they were still there. Multiple scans of the crowd later, you didnât see Damianâs waves nor Jonâs signature glasses. The spike of disappointment morphed into a vice around your chest even as you shoved it down. Your phone, now off airplane mode, buzzed in your pocket. You spun on your heel and headed towards baggage claim. The train you needed to take back home wasnât going to book itself.Â
Despite your unfamiliarity with the airport, it was simple enough to follow the signs towards the baggage claim area. You stopped at a restroom on your way there to avoid having to maneuver through one with a full suitcase in tow. The screen was empty of flights from your airline when you arrived, and your phone was blank of any email updates. Instead, you rerouted to the Amtrak app. The train with the lowest fare that also gave you enough buffer time to get your bags and catch the local train from the airport to the station was 2 hours away. The number of your bank balance flashed in your mind.Â
âThirty-eight for the train and eight to get to the airport,â you muttered aloud. âYes I am so willing to spend fifty bucks to finally just be home.â The inevitable expense of a taxi or rideshare back to your home poked at the back of your mind. You ignored it. The voucher would cover the difference later on and that would have to be enough.Â
A notification banner popped up on the top of your phone screen. The text notification was from the airline, declaring baggage claim three. Sure enough, the screen on the wall said the same thing. Baggage claim number three was farther down. You moved quickly, shoving through other passengers to stand in closer to it. Standing nearby was someone you had a murky recollection of from the boarding line.
All that was left now was to wait.Â
~
Damian bit back a growl as a large man shoved him back into Jon and forced his way farther up the line.Â
âThatâs not getting him anywhere,â Jon muttered. He was half-hoping his powers would spontaneously come back and help them out. âWhatâs the point?â Damian shook his head.
âIf people made sense, Jon, weâd be out of work.â Jon rolled his eyes.Â
âYouâre hilarious.âÂ
Damian chuckled lowly, pulling his carry-on bag from the overhead storage, then Jonâs.Â
âDamn it.âÂ
A jolt of panic sliced through Jon. His head snapped towards Damian, eyes wide. Jon winced, massaging the back of his neck. That hurt.
âWhat?âÂ
âWe lost them.â He nodded towards the front of the plane. You were gone.Â
âShit.â
As much as he wanted to get off the plane, Jon wouldnât have pushed through the other passengers even with powers at full strength. Especially with powers at full strength. He followed the movement of the crowd as they exited the gate, coming to a stop just beside a stand selling Philadelphia hoodies and t-shirts. Jon eyed them with a not small amount of disdain. Heâd pass.Â
âSo weâre not taking another plane-â Damian began.Â
âOh fuck no,â Jon interrupted.Â
âWhy do you think I started with âweâre notâ?âÂ
âRight,â Jon could feel his cheeks heating. âI knew that.âÂ
âHnn. So could it be worthwhile to call someone now? Itâs past 9:30, your family should be up. Of mine, Alfred at the very least will be awake at this hour.â
âWhatâs the other option?â
âWe take another method of public transport to Gotham and have Alfred pick us up there.âÂ
Jon thought about it for a moment. Then he thought of you. His hearing was past the point of awful fluctuation, but not good enough to hear across a crowded airport. And he didnât know your heartbeat. It was a weird thought. Jon thought about it again. That was a weird thought too. But it had been a long time since heâd gotten to know someone without being able to hear their heartbeat.Â
âDo we know what theyâre doing? I donât think we even talked about it. But I donât want to leave them alone after all this.â He paused. âThatâs not weird, right?âÂ
Damian shook his head.Â
âNo, I agree. Which means your family is out. And waiting for Alfred to drive all the way here and then asking them to get into a car with a complete stranger for two hours is also less than ideal.â
âSo public transport it is.â Jon concluded. âWait, how do we even know they arenât taking another plane?â Damian smirked.Â
âThey donât call us the world's greatest detectives for nothing.â
Jon narrowed his eyes at Damian. âYou guessed.âÂ
âI formed a hunch based on multiple deductions,â Damian retorted, arms crossed.
âSo you guessed.âÂ
âDeduction and guesswork are two different things.âÂ
âUh huh,â Jon smiled and started heading to the help desk. âKeep telling yourself that.â
The help desk employee guaranteed Damian that the vouchers would be emailed and attached to his airline account. Based on the look on his face, Damian couldnât care less about them. Jon wanted to hurry up and find you too. But he also didnât want to be booked into the nearest flight to Gotham. Until he got his powers back in full, Jon wasnât doing any flying whatsoever, much less flying that involved any sort of metal contraptions.Â
âWhich baggage claim is for this flight?â Damian asked before he stepped away. The airline employee checked her screen.Â
âThree, but I donât believe bags have started arriving yet.âÂ
Damian nodded and headed quickly towards the signs leading towards the baggage claim area.Â
âThanks!â Jon threw out as he followed, sneakers squealing against the linoleum floor as he hurried to catch up.Â
(A/N): this is where the real-life experience I took to write this story runs out so please take any and all airplane/airline logistics with a grain of salt. And with that said, enjoy! I want to get the rest of this series out by the end of fall to hopefully have room to post the holiday fics I want to write so look forwards to the coming final chapters. And apologies, this is a short one.
edit: forgot to link the masterlist so here it is!
The next forty five minutes passed in some part conversation and some part Jon showing you dozens of pictures on his phone. He had a few really good ones of Superman (the older one) and some stunning ones overlooking Metropolis.Â
âMy parents are reporters so theyâthey know people who take photos like this,â Jon explained to you, crunching on the airplane pretzels heâd reclaimed from Damian. Â
You pulled out a few photos of the Gotham skyline to show the boys in turn. Your photos didnât live up to theirs, but with your not-high-tech phone camera, those were about the best you had.Â
A stronger bout of turbulence rocked even you, hands instinctively gripping the hard plastic of the armrests. A quick glance at Damian gave away that he didnât find it regular either.Â
Jonâs âThis is weird right?â overlapped with the concerned cries of other passengers. You turned to Damian.Â
âIt feels more like a train right now than a plane.âÂ
âI agree. This is irregular at best.âÂ
You nearly missed the crackle of the loudspeaker from underneath the raised voices of those around you.Â
âLadies and gentleman, there has been a slight issue with one of our regulators. As of now, all passengers and attendants are to remain seated for their safety. Our next step is to make an emergency landing at the Philadelphia airport where there will then be connecting flights to Gotham. If you would rather find an alternate method of transport, let the front desk know as soon as we arrive so any luggage is forwarded to baggage claim.âÂ
You could barely process the new information over the sudden uproar.Â
âThis has never happened to you, I assume?â Damian spoke loudly.Â
âNo, nothing like this. Iâd never even had a delay this bad before but this? No it-itâs crazy.â The answer to your question was chiseled into the shaken expression on Damianâs face but you asked anyway. âEither of you?â
Twin shakes of the head confirmed your assumption.Â
âItâs not an emergency right? Like I know itâs an emergency landing but not a fall out of the sky kind of emergency right?â Jonâs blue eyes were wide. You shrugged helplessly.
âI want to say theyâd tell us if it was but-â
âBut theyâve been less than forthcoming so far so why begin now?â Damian finished.Â
âYeah,â you agreed. âExactly.âÂ
Beside your seat, the emergency exit lights lit up.Â
âThat doesnât bode well.â Damian pulled the words out of your brain. âBut panicking,â he hissed at the woman lamenting in the row behind you, âwill not solve anything.âÂ
You didnât think Damian realized Jon was clinging to his hand. You didnât think he knew he was holding yours. Â
âJon, youâre shaking the floor.â The words came out harsher than you intended. âSorry. I didnât mean to be-I just-itâs-â
âSorry I just-â Jon switched from tapping his foot to holding Damianâs left hand in his, focus tuned on his fingers. Damianâs gaze was locked on where his right hand was linked with yours. You pulled away as if his gaze burned you. âIâm never flying commercial again,â Jon finished.Â
The laughter that bubbled out of your mouth was more hysterical than you intended.Â
Another bout of rough turbulence wracked the plane. You kept your hands to yourself his time, arms crossed against your chest to squeeze at your biceps.Â
You barely heard Jonâs whispered cursing underneath the panic rising throughout the rest of the plane.
Damian stayed quiet, but the hand that wasnât held in Jonâs was tightly clenched. If he wasnât human, you might have expected there to be holes bored into the head of an older man across the aisle. You wanted to quiet the guy yourself; his catastrophic ranting was only adding into your own anxiety. Instead, you spent a couple minutes making sure all of the stuff in your backpack was tucked away.Â
âHe does know everyone else can hear him, right?â You asked as you sat up. Both boys chuckled. Jonâs fingers tapped rapidly on his thigh.Â
âAlright folks,â the pilotâs voice interrupted the catastrophizing. âWeâve begun the landing process. Please be aware that further turbulence is normal. We should be on the ground soon.â
âHow much longer can they call turbulence normal?â Damian ground out. You didnât have an answer for him.Â
