Salvage by MuffinLance (@muffinlance) - Does this fic need an introduction? During Book 1, Zuko falls overboard & is rescued by Hakoda. Bonding & adoption ensues. Complete.

Samsara: Mai’s Long Day by Loopy (@loopy777) - Maiko. Mai gets stuck in a time loop on the Day of the Black Sun & does a lot of crazy shit trying to get out again. Had to stop reading at several points because I was laughing too damn hard. Probably one of the best fics I’ve ever read. I’m not even kidding. Complete.

Sozin’s Bay by Blue_Lacquer - Maiko. Mai & Zuko run into each other in a Fire Nation colony during his banishment. Complete.

tranquil as a forest, on fire within by peroxideprncss - Maiko. AU where Mai runs away & joins the Yuyan Archers.

Two Drama Queens Loose on a Shirshu by mindbending - AU where Zuko runs away after the Agni Kai & gets adopted taken on as an apprentice by June.

Okay I know this is a post of Zuko & Mai fics but here’s a Toph-centric one because I refuse to leave it out just to fit a theme

King Kuei and Firelord Zuko friendship ❤️ 💚

Like at this point i've gotten used to people grossly misunderstanding the show's characters (mainly aang and katara) but i've never seen it happen so blatantly, and to ZUKO of all characters.

Zuko, the guy that asked his uncle to let him into the war meeting when he was only 13 because "he'll be firelord one day" and he wants to learn as quick as possible. Zuko, the guy that interrupted said war meeting also at age 13 because even that young he already felt a massive responsibility for his nation and the people in it, and he couldn't just stand by as these generals were planning on killing them. Zuko, who at age 13 BEGGED his father not to punish him, because he only had the Fire Nation's best interest at heart.

Zuko, who despite what his father did to him, still traveled to the world's most desolate places for a chance of getting his honor, his family and his throne back. Zuko, who at age 16, looked his father in the eye and told him he was going to free his people, and the whole world of his tyranny. Zuko, who at age 16, said he wasn't betraying his nation by joining the Avatar, he's saving it. Zuko, the teenager with so much love for his nation that he questioned his own uncle when he suggested Zuko should be firelord, because he didn't feel like he deserved it, because his people deserve a leader that hasn't made as many mistakes as Zuko.

And we have to remember that they wrote and filmed the first season a while ago (and it had a ton of development hell time too). The creators have the opportunity now to learn from the mistakes and build on the high points. Hopefully, but not holding my breath on it, Netflix will increase the episode count AT LEAST to 10 for seasons 2 and 3. That short run really killed a Lot of potential to iron out issues and improve the pacing, as it does for A TON of other streaming shows.
