for a moment, he allowed himself to believe the lie. he even sat in his chair in front of the hearth - sitting across from the echo of toriel in her own chair. she didnât register that he was there, just as the other figures in his memories hadnât. but this all felt so real. he could even smell the butterscotch-cinnamon pie in the kitchen, hear the gentle crackling of his fire magic. asgore shut his eyes for a moment, though he was all but forced to open them as tiny footsteps ran past him, complete with childish giggling as chara and asriel played together. his eyes began to water, and he looked up at the ghost of toriel, as if she would finally notice that he was there. but she didnât. none of them did.
the only person that noticed was someone who absolutely should not have been in this memory, and the realization that the real undyne was seeing all this too hit him a little harder than it should have. he tried to smile at her, but only succeeded for a brief moment before it turned into a pained, teary-eyed wince. â i wishâŚyou could have met them. â was all he could murmur, taking a deep albeit shaky breath.Â
Undyne isnât even sure at first that anything sheâs seeing isnât a mistwrought memory-- Asgore seems just as peaceful here as his family. Itâs strange to see them all here, so... unburdened. Living the life they deserved to live, before it was taken away.
But this is the real Asgore, she realizes when he focuses on her. She feels abruptly and extremely awkward.
Undyne met Toriel when she came barrelling in to stop Friskâs final battle only to find the ex-Queen already there for the same cause. But sheâs not the only person here Undyne can recognize.
âI met your son,â she blurts out, perhaps in some attempt to reassure Asgore. âHeâs, uh. He was a good kid.â
