There are profiles of the personalities who have shaped the past, present, and future of LA dining: Nancy Silverton, the founder of La Brea Bakery who now runs the Mozza empire; Jazz Singsanong and Tui Sungkamee, the proprietors of Jitlada, a mind-meltingly great restaurant in a strip-mall restaurant in Thai Town; and Jon Shook, Vinny Dotolo, and Ludo Lefebvre, who are building a modern-day Los Angeles restaurant dynasty. Lucas Peterson explores the challenges street vendors face through the story of Caridad Vasquez, the last vendor left on Breed Street; Zan Romanoff checks in with Ron Finley, a self-described “urban gangsta gardener.”

Before I met Nancy Fraser I didn’t know what to expect.She was visiting Cambridge from New York, a philosophy professor with a very impressive CV who was in town for just a couple of weeks. A first casual lunch with her in our college cafeteria was chaperoned by a mutual friend. Little did we know we would really get something out of this philosopher that was easy to grasp for our audience. Eventually, Sarah Stein Lubrano and I interviewed Fraser, sitting in the heavy leather sofas of a professorial office.We had carefully put together questions about her scholarly work and thought, and we had read her more journalistic pieces, too. We were well prepared. The discussion lasted for an hour and a half, and the writing up took almost for times as long. It was tiring and laborious work, involving clarification, explanation and, at times, translation.But it was then, back in 2012, when I first understood how powerful our vision was: we wanted to ‘make academia engaging’, to take the analytical power of academic thought and academic thinkers to illuminate events and current affairs in the wider world, We wanted to provide the forum for a new kind of debate, by bringing the best of scholarship to as broad an audience as possible. In the hours we spent with her, Nancy Fraser not only helped me to understand the intricate interrelations of capitalism, the environment and the Euro-crisis, she also helped me to realize what our role as editors was supposed to be. We do more than just search for the right word at the right moment, we’re also searching for the right encounters. We are mediators, translators, and hosts at the same time.I understood that King’s Review was about these kind of encounters – between academia and the public, between works and ideas, between people, between thoughts. It was founded to bridge gaps and to make these encounters more available, accessible and understandable.While the whole journal, as well as all of the pieces we publish, are in the spirit of ‘encounters’, we decided to place the theme at the centre of this year’s print issue. Here, the first half of the magazine contains seven contributions in the guise of long-form articles, photography, sheet music, and fiction, all illuminating aspects of encounters.

Issue 12 of Printed Pages contains 240 pages of inspiring work and engaging articles that feature creatives from around the world. The magazine brings together the best work from the last six months It’s Nice That and provides an essential overview of the creative world.

The cover was shot by Jack Davison as part of a commission that profiles the work of graphic designer John Morgan. Inside, features include an interview with graphic design legend Milton Glaser, illustrator Jean Jullien, exclusive images of TroTro drivers in Ghana by photographer Charlie Kwai, and a gallery of the heroes of Rio 2016 sculpted by Wilfrid Wood.

Throughout the magazine there are articles covering the work of more than 30 international artists including photographer Blaise Cepis, printmaker Sophy Hollington, and graphic designers Neubau to name but a few.

KALEIDOSCOPE’s new Issue #28 (Fall 2016), introduces a new editorial structure with Myriam Ben Salah as new Editor-in-Chief and Alessio Ascari shifting to the role of Publisher and Creative Director.

This kickoff issue, launching in London during Frieze Week, comes with a set of two different covers.

American sensation Jordan Wolfson, who is also the subject of an extensive MONOsection (with an original photo shoot by Jason Nocito). Swinging between ambition and ambiguity, Wolfson’s production has been consistently thought provoking for over a decade and is about to be celebrated by a career-defining exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. For this occasion, Jordan talks here at length with the Stedelijk’s director, Beatrix Ruf, while KALEIDOSCOPE’s New York editor Alexander Shulan discusses his arcane mixture of absurd humor, spectacle and desire, channeling a dark strain in American culture.

Following an ongoing and quite personal research project, new Editor-in-Chief Myriam Ben Salah edits this issue’s MAIN THEME survey dedicated to the subject of Disorientalism, or the deconstruction of a preconceived Middle-Eastern aesthetic.

New voices in REGULARS, starting with New York-based curator Piper Marshall, who’s joined the ranks for some much-needed “Cheap Talk,” and Alessio Ascari, probing the blurred lines of the visual reign in a new series entitled Visualize.

FINALY: ONE DOZEN EGGS! Put A Egg On It 12 heads west to Las Vegas with Geoffrey Ellis who photographs Chef Giuseppe Conte preparing whole striped bass for friends and family. Julia Wertz documents San Francisco artist haunts with her nostalgic illustrations. Back on the East Coast, Sarah Keough checks out people eating on the go as only New Yorkers can. Composer and artist M. Lamar has a chat over monkfish with iconic New Yorkers Penny Arcade and Max Blagg.

Scott Thomas has pulled off the rare trick of gaining national treasure status in not one but two countries, having reached the top of her profession in both Britain, her nation of birth, and France, the country she now calls home.
