Fuck, Sebastian thinks, as he checks his pocket one more time.

He is not usually so . . . flappable, but these are special circumstances.

Beside him, Kurt is silent. Sebastian takes a glance to check: he's swiping through Instagram. A small mercy. Kurt can spend ages watching reels if left unchecked.

Though, Sebastian can feel the mild disapproval from him at their behavior in such a picturesque place. They should be flirting or talking about the coffee or anything else.

Sebastian prods at the inner seam of his blazer pocket, carefully feeling out the innermost crevices of the cocoon of fabric. Zip, zilch, nada, fucking gone somebody shoot him now.

That ring was vintage.

Goddammit. Sebastian checks his other pocket, even though he knows he definitely had it in the left. No. Pants, left, right, nope. Sebastian checks his back pockets, slouching on the bench to lift his hips and root around for any stray rings.

"Lost your phone?" Kurt's inquiry is light, casual, but Sebastian nearly jumps.

"Yep," Sebastian lies.

A great foundation for their marriage, he's sure. The marriage that will not happen because no ring, no proposal, no engagement, and this was the most perfect spot and time to do it god fucking dammit. Sebastian squints resentfully out at the setting sun, which is taking its pretty oranges and pinks with it as it begins to flee the humiliating scene.

"Bas, you put it right here when we sat down, next to you."

Sebastian looks between them, where his phone is resting innocently.

"Would you look at that!" He exclaims with false cheer. "You're so great, thanks."

"Are you okay?"

"Never been better." Sebastian smiles tightly out into a distance, unable to look at Kurt.

It was a fancy placeholder because Kurt would want to shop together, true, but it would not do for Sebastian to go into his proposal empty-handed.

Kurt sighs.

"You shouldn't be careless with your things, Sebastian, anybody could just take them."

Kurt places the phone on top of Sebastian's thigh. And he keeps his hand there until Sebastian looks down.

Kurt is wearing the ring.

"You dropped it ten minutes ago." Kurt's smile presses against his cheek, fond. "Finders keepers."

Sebastian is so relieved, and overwhelmed, that he can only joke, "Did you want me to weep?"

"Nope, just squirm. It's fun."

Kurt has replaced the sun, flushed pink and brighter than the glint off his ring finger.
