          Often referred to as the revolution, the French Revolution marked a turning point in world history and is often considered by historians to not only have accelerated other revolutions worldwide, but also helped shepherd the world into the modern era. Beginning with the storm on the Bastille on 14 July 1789, the French Revolution was a time of enormous political instability, fuelled by Enlightenment ideals that were considered radically liberal at their time. Over 16,000 members of the aristocracy and other enemies of the Jacobins were sentenced to death during the infamous Reign of Terror (1793-4), including King Louis VXI and Queen Marie Antionette. During this time, the monarchy was abolished in France forever, and it became a republic (with the exception of the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte).
