Nobuyoshi Araki «A Sentimental Journey/ Winter Journey» (1991). «It’s thanks to Yoko that I became a photographer». - Nobuyoshi Araki. Nobuyoshi Araki has achieved world-wide acclaim for his photography. With an impeccable creative drive, he has published over 500 photo books. In his works he address a variety of themes and techniques. From revealing portraiture to alluring kinbaku-bi as seen in legendary S&M Sniper magazine. After studying photography at university in the 1960s, Araki engaged a commercial pursuit at advertising agency Dentsu. It was here he met Yoko Aoki, who later would become his wife. Araki self-published his first photo book «Sentimental Journey» in 1971. This monograph is an intimate photo essay documenting the Yoko & Araki wedding and honeymoon. «To live is to go through a sentimental journey, and for Araki, to photograph is to go through a sentimental journey». - Yoko Aoki. From their first meeting 1968 Yoko has played a significant role in Araki’s photography. The artist is still preoccupied with his love. During the last years he continues to photograph our firmament, clouds and the sky, and in this manner document his love Yoko. During the late 1980s Yoko was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This 1991 title chronicle Yoko & Nobuyoshi strong bond and deep intimate relationship. The book opens with the couple wedding photo and chronicle Yoko’s battle with cancer and beyond. «Sentimental Journey» now form a serializtion of photo books. This title, «Winter Journey», can be understood as a chapter in the series. «A Sentimental Journey/ Winter Journey» is a work of beauty and sadness. An inmost photo diary and life-affirming love declaration, it share moments of tender intimacy, sadness and heartbreak.
