-๋ค๊ฐ, -์/์ด๋ค๊ฐ, -์/์๋ค๊ฐ, -๋ค๊ฐ๋, -์๋ค๊ฐ
This has been a much-requested grammar form! -๋ค๊ฐ is a really useful grammar point that is used often in speech, so it would be really helpful to learn how to use it well.
I will cover four differentย โformsโ of -๋ค๊ฐ, each of which has its own meaning(s). The four forms Iโll cover will be -๋ค๊ฐ, ์/์ด๋ค๊ฐ,ย -์/์๋ค๊ฐ (-๋ค๊ฐ attached to a verb conjugated to past tense), and -๋ค๊ฐ๋. Also, while itโs not the same as the verb endings that use -๋ค๊ฐ, Iโll explain the particle -์๋ค๊ฐ as well.
-๋ค๊ฐ
Function
The -๋ค๊ฐ grammar form is used to indicate interruption of an action.ย In English, we could translate this form roughly asย โWhile doing Xโฆโ
Usage
-๋ค๊ฐ is very simple to use! Just attach it to an action verb root in present tense! You can optionally remove the โ๊ฐโ at the end and just use it as -๋ค as well. Just make sure that the subject of the preceding and following clauses stays the same Letโs check it out:
Interruption of an action:
์๋ฆฌ๋ฅผ ํ๋ค๊ฐ ์ ์๋ฅผ ๋จ์ดํธ๋ ธ์ด์. (While cooking, I dropped a plate.)
์ํ๋ฅผ ๋ณด๋ค๊ฐ ์ ๋ค์์ด. (While watching a movie, I fell asleep.)
ํ๋ ์จ๋ ์์ ๋ฅผ ํ๋ค๊ฐ ์น๊ตฌ๋ค๊ณผ ์ ํ๋ ํ์ด์. (While doing his homework, Hwarang ย talked with his friends on the phone.)
์ํ ์จ๋ ์ค๋๋ง์ ๋ชป ๋ณธ ์น๊ตฌ๋ ํตํํ๋ค๊ฐ ์ธ์์ด์. (While on the phone with a friend she hadnโt been able to see in a long time, Suha cried.)
NOTE: This section originally listed a second meaning for -๋ค๊ฐ, that being the introduction of the simultaneous occurrence of two actions. After looking into it a bit more, a true feeling of simultaneous occurrence can not be achieved by using -๋ค๊ฐ and -(์ผ)๋ฉด์ must be used, otherwise the sense of interruption persists. You can read a little more by clicking this paragraph. I apologize for any confusion caused.
-์/์ด๋ค๊ฐ
Function
-์/์ด๋ค๊ฐ is a grammar form indicating sequential actions. The action in the preceding clause is done first, and then the action in the following clause occurs in a different location. The two actions must be related to each other, so that the action in the following clause happens dependent upon the completion of the action in the preceding clause. You can think of it as meaningย โFirstโฆ and thenโฆโ in English, though of course you might have to change that a bit for a more natural translation depending on the circumstances.
Usage
To use this form, simply attach -์/์ด๋ค๊ฐ to the root of an action verb in the present tense. Remember to change the root as needed depending on whether or not itโs irregular!ย You can optionally remove the โ๊ฐโ at the end and just use it as -์/์ด๋ค as well.
์ ๊ฐ๋ฐฉ ์ข ๊ฐ์ ธ๋ค ์ฃผ์ธ์. (Please get my bag and give it to me.)
์๋ฆ ์จ๋ ๊น๋ฐฅ์ ๋ง๋ค์ด๋ค๊ฐ ์น๊ตฌ์๊ฒ ์คฌ์ด์. (Areum made kimbap and gave it to her friends.ย
์ธ๋๋ ์ ๋ฌผ์ ์ฌ๋ค๊ฐ ์ด๋จธ๋๊ป ๋ณด๋์ด์. (My older sister bought a gift and sent it to mom.)
-์/์๋ค๊ฐ
Function
Using -๋ค๊ฐ on an action verb conjugated to the past tense indicates completion of an action, after which another action action occurs. This is in contrast to -๋ค๊ฐ with a present tense action verb, which indicates interruption of an action or simultaneous occurrence of two actions, as seen above. The verbs used in the preceding and following clauses are often contrasting or opposite, though this is not always the case.
Usage
Just conjugate the action verb that you want to use to past tense and add -๋ค๊ฐ! You can optionally remove the โ๊ฐโ at the end and just use this grammar as -์/์๋ค. Also, the subject of both the preceding and following clauses must stay the same.
๊ฐ๋ค ์ฌ๊ฒ์! (Iโll go and come back! [More naturally,ย โIโll be back!โ])
ํธ์์ ์ ๋ค๋ ๋ค๊ฐ ์ง์ ๊ฐ์ด์. (I stopped by the convenience store and then went home.)
NOTE: This form can also be used to express that something unexpected happened after doing the action in the preceding clause.
์ง์ ๊ฐ๋ค๊ฐ ๋ฌธ ์์ ์ฌ ์ํฌ๊ฐ ์์์ด์. (I went home and there was an unexpected package in front of the door.)
๊ธฐ์ฐจ๋ฅผ ํ๋ค๊ฐ 6๋ ๋ง์ ๋ชป ๋ณธ ์น๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋ง๋ฌ์์. (I got on the train and met a friend I hadnโt seen in six years.)
-๋ค๊ฐ๋
Function
This grammar point is used to give warnings, indicating that if the action or condition of the preceding clause continues, then the negative result in the following clause will occur. It can be translated asย โIfโฆ thenโฆโ. Just keep in mind that it must be used with negative consequences only!
Something important to note with this form is that, while it might seem similar to -(์ผ)๋ฉด, the two are not totally interchangeable! -๋ค๊ฐ๋ refers to an action that is already known to be in progress, regardless of context, while an identical sentence that changes only -๋ค๊ฐ๋ to -(์ผ)๋ฉด refers to a condition in the preceding clause that may or may not be in progress (unless prior context makes it clear that the action is in progress, in which case the two sentences are identical).
Usage
Unlike the other -๋ค๊ฐs that we have looked at so far, this one can be used with action and descriptive verbs both! Just attach -๋ค๊ฐ๋ to the root of the verb in either present or past tense. Using a verb conjugated to the past tense changes the preceding clause from a situation that is currently in progress to speculating about a present or future event.
PRESENT
Action verbs: -๋ค๊ฐ๋
๋ด๋ฐฐ๋ฅผ ๊ณ์ ํผ์ฐ๋ค๊ฐ๋ ํ์์ ๊ฑธ๋ฆด์ง๋ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์. (If you keep smoking, you might get lung cancer [LIT-I donโt know whether or not youโll get lung cancer].)
์ด๋ ๊ฒ ๊ณต๋ถ๋ฅผ ๋ฏธ๋ฃจ๋ค๊ฐ๋ ๊ธฐ๋ง ์ํ์ ๋จ์ด์ง ์๋ ์์ด์. (If you put off studying like this you could even fail the final exam.)
Descriptive verbs: -๋ค๊ฐ๋
๋ฏธ์ธ๋จผ์ง๊ฐ ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ์ฌํ๋ค๊ฐ๋ ํธํก๊ธฐ ์งํ ํ์๋ค์ด ๋ง์์ง ๊ฑฐ์์. (If the pollution stays severe like this, the number of respiratory illness patients will increase.)
๋ ์จ๊ฐ ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ๋ฅ๋ค๊ฐ๋ ํนํ ๋ ธ์ธ๋ค์ด ์ด์ฌ๋ณ์ ๋ง์ด ๊ฑธ๋ฆด ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (If the weather stays hot like this, it seems that especially many elderly people could get heat stroke.)
PASTโ I actually struggled over this section quite a bit! I had to ask some native speaker friends to help me work through it. In general, the consensus we reached is that the examples that I wrote here are correct, but it is far more common to just use -(์ผ)๋ฉด for the same meaning.
Action verbs: -์/์๋ค๊ฐ๋
์ด์ ์ฒ๋ผ ๊ฒฝ๊ธฐํ๋ค๊ฐ๋ ์ง ๊ฑฐ์์. (If we play like we did yesterday, then we will lose.)
์์์ ๋๋ฌด ๋ง์ด ๋จน์๋ค๊ฐ๋ ๋ฐฐํ์ด ๋ ๊ฑฐ์์. (If you eat too much food, youโll get a stomachache.)
Descriptive verbs: -์/์๋ค๊ฐ๋
์ง์ ์ต๊ธฐ๊ฐ ๊ณ์ ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ๋์๋ค๊ฐ๋ ๊ณฐํก์ด๊ฐ ์ฝ๊ฒ ์๊ธธ ๊ฑฐ์์. (If the humidity in your house is constantly high, mold will form easily.)
์ถ์ฐ์จ์ด ๊ณ์ ๋ฎ์๋ค๊ฐ๋ ์ธ๊ตฌ๊ฐ ๊ฐ์ํ ๊ฑฐ์์. (If the birthrate stays low, the population will decrease.)
-์๋ค๊ฐ
Function
The particle -์๋ค๊ฐ has two main functions. One of those functions is to indicate the specific location of something, and the other is to add more information in addition to something else. You can drop the finalย โ๊ฐโ and just use this particle as -์๋ค.
Usage
When used to indicate the specific location of something, -์๋ค๊ฐ is attached to an adverb. When used to provide additional information, it attaches to nouns.
Specific location:
์ข ์ด ๋ฐ์๋ค๊ฐ ์ฌ์ธํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. (Please sign the bottom of the paper.)
๊ฐ๋ฐฉ์ ์ฑ ์ ์์๋ค๊ฐ ๋์์ด์. (I put my bag on top of the table.)
์ด๋์๋ค ๋๊น์? (Where should I put it?)
Additional information:
๊น๋ฐฅ์ ๋ง๋ค์์ด์. ๊ฒ๋ค๊ฐ(๊ทธ์๋ค๊ฐ) ์๋ฃ์๋ ์ค๋นํด ๋จ์ด์. (I made kimbap. In addition to that, I also prepared drinks.)ย
์์ค ์จ๋ ์๋ฐํ๋ ๋ฐ๋ค๊ฐ ๋ด์ฌ ํ๋๋ ํด์. (In addition to working a part-time job, Soyun also does volunteer activities.) NOTE: ๋ฐ๋ค๊ฐ = ๋ฐ + ์๋ค๊ฐ. For more info on -๋ ๋ฐ, click here!
์ด๋ฒ ์ฃผ ๊ฐ์ค์๊ธ์๋ค๊ฐ ์ ๊ธฐ์๊ธ๋ ๋ด์ผ ๋ผ์. (This week I must pay my electricity bill in addition to my gas bill.)
And thatโs about it for -๋ค๊ฐ! Thereโs a lot of information in this post, so take your time reading through it and feel free to ask if you find anything confusing. Happy studying, everyone~
Level 3 / Lesson 3:ย (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค / ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค (I can.../You may...)
์๋ , ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ! In previous lessons, we learned how to sayย โifโ using -๋ฉด andย โeven thoughโ orย โeven ifโ usingย ์/์ด/์ฌ๋. In this lesson, we are going to be using these structures to either give someone permission, or to say that we can do something. Letโs begin!
๋๋ค
First of all, letโs talk about the word ๋๋ค. You might know thatย ๋๋ค meansย โto become,โ but it also has a few different other meanings. Talk to Me in Korean I think defines it bestโit can meanย โโto function,โ โto be possible,โ or โcan do.โโ For example, you may hear people sayย โ๋ผ์?โ to meanย โis it working?โ orย โis it okay?โ Letโs see how we can use how we can useย ๋๋ค withย -(์ผ)๋ฉด orย ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ to sayย โI/you canโฆโ
-(์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค
Now that we know that -๋ฉด meansย โifโ and ๋๋ค meansย โto be possibleโ orย โto work,โ letโs look at a sentence with both of them together. You can use this formula:
[verb / adjective stem]ย + (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค = You may [verb / adjective] / I can [verb / adjective]
For example:
์ง๊ธ ๊ฐ๋ฉด ๋ผ์. = You can go now / You may go now / I can go now
๊ฐ๋ค = to go
๊ฐ๋ฉด ๋ผ์ = if you go now, itโs okay / itโs okay if you go now / it is possible for you to go now
So literally, this sentence can meanย โitโs okay if you go nowโ orย โitโs okay if I go now.โ But most of the time youโll see it translated asย โyou can/may go nowโ orย โI can go now.โ Letโs look at some more examples!
์์ ๋ฅผ ๋๋์ผ๋๊น ์น๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋ง๋๋ฉด ๋ผ์. = You finished the homework, so you can meet your friend.
๋๋ด๋ค = to finish / to complete
๋ง๋๋ค = to meet
๋ง๋ + (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค =ย ๋ง๋๋ฉดย ๋๋ค = you can meet / itโs okay if you meet
More on theย (์ผ)๋๊น structure in a future lesson!
์ ๋ ๋์ด ์ถฉ๋ถํด์ ์ด๊ฑธ ์ฌ๋ฉด ๋ผ์ = I have enough money, so I can buy this
์ถฉ๋ถํ๋ค = to be enough / to be plenty
ย ์ฌ๋ค = to buy
์ฌย + (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค =ย ์ฌ๋ฉด ๋๋ค = you can buy it / itโs okay if you buy it / itโs possible for me to buy it
-(์ผ)๋ฉด ์ ๋๋ค
If you want to say that you or someone else cannot do something, or that something is not possible, you can just attachย -๋ฉด ์ ๋๋ค to a verb or adjective. For example:
์ง๊ธ ๋งํ๋ฉด ์ ๋ผ์ = You canโt talk right now
๋งํ๋ค = to talk
๋งํ + (์ผ)๋ฉด ์ ๋๋ค =ย ๋งํ๋ฉด ์ ๋๋ค = itโs not okay if you talk / you may not talk
๋ฆ์ผ๋ฉด ์ ๋ผ์ = You cannot be late
๋ฆ๋ค = to be late
๋ฆย + (์ผ)๋ฉด ์ ๋๋ค =ย ๋ฆ์ผ๋ฉดย ์ ๋๋ค = I canโt be late / you cannot be late / itโs not okay if youโre late
์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค
Letโs move on toย ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค. In a lot of cases, this is very similar toย (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค. Simply use this formula to say that it is okay for someone to do something:
[verb / adjective stem] +ย ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค = You can [verb / adjective] / You may [verb / adjective]ย
From what I could gather, the only difference between this andย (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค is thatย (์ผ)๋ฉด ๋๋ค can be used to talk about yourself, whileย ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค is used for only talking to other people (as in granting others permission). Someone please correct me if Iโm wrong!ย
For example:
์ง๊ธ ๊ฐ๋ ๋ผ์ = You may go now / you can go now
๊ฐ๋ย ๋ผ์ = Even if you go, itโs okay / itโs okay even if you goย
๋ด์ผ์ ์ผ์ฐ ํด๊ทผํด๋ ๋ผ์. = You can leave work early tomorrow.
ํด๊ทผํ๋ค = to get off work / to leave work
ํด๊ทผํย + ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค =ย ํด๊ทผํด๋ย ๋๋ค = You can get off work / Itโs okay even if you leave work
์ ํธ๋ํฐ์ ๋น๋ ค๋ ๋ผ์ = You can borrow my phone
๋น๋ฆฌ๋ค = to borrow
๋น๋ฆฌย + ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค =ย ๋น๋ ค๋ย ๋๋ค = you can borrow it / its okay even if you borrow it
You will also hear ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ ๋๋ค when asking for permission. For instance:
์ง๋ฌธ ๋ฌผ์ด๋ด๋ ๋ผ์? = May I ask a question?
๋ฌผ์ด๋ณด๋ค = to ask
๋ฌผ์ด๋ด๋ ๋ผ์? = May I ask? / Is it okay if I ask?
์ด๊ฑธ ์ ์ด๋ด๋ ๋ผ์? = May I try this on?ย
์ ์ด๋ณด๋ค = to try on [clothes]
์ ์ด๋ด๋ ๋ผ์? = May I try it on? / Is it okay if I try it on?
If you want to say that someone does not have to do something, simply addย ์ before the verb or adjective. For instance:
์ง๊ธ ์ ๊ฐ๋ ๋ผ์ = You donโt have to go now / Even if you donโt go now, itโs okay
๊ณต๋ถ๋ฅผ ์ ํด๋ ๋ผ์ = You donโt have to study / Even if you donโt study, itโs okay
Occasionally, you may even hear ์/์ด/์ฌ๋ followed by the adjective ๊ด์ฐฎ๋ค, which means โto be okay.โ For example:
๋ด์ผ์ ์ผ์ฐ ํด๊ทผํด๋ ๊ด์ฐฎ์์. = Itโs okay [even] if you leave work early.
์ง๋ฌธ ๋ฌผ์ด๋ด๋ ๊ด์ฐฎ์์? = Is it okay [even] if I ask a question?
Wow, this lesson was pretty long, but I hope you understand everything! ์ง๋ฌธ ๋ฌผ์ด๋ด๋ ๋ผ์! You can ask me questions!! See you in the next lesson! ์๋ !ย

hii~ What's the difference between -ใน/์ ์ ์๋ค and ๋ชป+verb? I know that they both mean can't but I don't know when to use either
Hey anon!
Youโre correct in stating that they both meanย โcanโtโ, hopefully, this answer will help clear some confusion you have.ย
I used to have this problem as well - I didnโt know which one to use for the longest time and I would say:
ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ๋งํ ์ ์์ด์ย VSย ํ๊ตญ๋ง ์ ๋ชปํด์ - I canโt speak Korean
I mentioned it a little in my Basic Communicative Sentences video. When using -ใน/์ ์ ์์ด์/์์ด์ and ์ (๋ชป)ํด์, ์ (๋ชป)ํด์ is more natural! Of course, you can say either! But theyโre completely different depending on the situation.
-ใน/์ ์ ์๋ค - is used when you are unable to do something at the moment (due to the temporary obstacles that occur)ย ย ย ~ ๋น๊ฐ ์์ ๊ฐ ์ ์์ด์ ใ ใ - I canโt go because itโs raining :(
Whereas ๋ชปํ๋ค expresses permanent inability! (๋ชป - poorly / ํ๋ค - to do) Often times, -์ง is also attached to the verb to express inability (+์ง ๋ชปํ๋ค)ย ย ย ~ ์ ๋ ํผ์๋ ธ๋ฅผ ์ฐ์ฃผํ์ง ๋ชปํด์ - I canโt play piano
*BONUS*
You can addย โ-์ง ์๋คโ to say that you donโt do something, rather than you canโt!ย ย ย ~ย ์์ฃผ๋ฅผ ๋ง์์ง ์์์ - I donโt drink Soju
Main difference:-ใน/์ ์ ์๋ค - unable to do something (in the moment)๋ชป ํ๋ค - unable to do something (at all) ย ย ย ~ more natural and used more in spoken Korean
Hope this cleared up your confusion! If you have any more questions, Iโm always here to help ~~ Happy Learning :)

~ใน์ง์ธ์
This is described as being similar to ใน๋ง์ , with the same two meanings. However, this structure is slightly stronger. 1. The first meaning can be understood as โEven thoughโฆโ or โAlthoughโฆโ. The first clause is (usually) a negative thing, and the second clause is a positive thing. You can think of it as interchangeable with โโฆ ๊ทธ๋ผ์๋ ๋ถ๊ตฌํ๊ณ โฆโ. ํ๋ค์ง์ธ์ , ๋ถ๊ฐ๋ฅํ์ง ์๋ค. Even though itโs difficult, itโs not impossible. 2. The second is like saying โIโd rather โฆ than โฆโ. ์ฃฝ์์ง์ธ์ ์คํจํ์ง ์๋๋ค. Iโd rather die than fail.
For more example sentences, see the ~ใน๋ง์ post.
V๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋๋ค. Leave a person to do V / Leave a person alone and let them V
Itโs quite difficult to explain but you use V๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋๋ค as said on the title: to leave a person do V/ to leave a person and let them do V (btw this is commonly used).
Take a look at the examples below to get a better understanding of the grammar point:
๋ ์ข ๊ทธ๋ฅ ํผ์ ์๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋ฌ! (๋ ์ข ๊ทธ๋ฅ ํผ์ ์๊ฒ ๋๋ฌ ์!) Just leave me alone!
์ธ๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค๋๋ค (์ธ๊ฒ ๋๋ฌ ์ ) To leave a person alone and let them cry
๋จ์ ์ ๋ฉ๋๋ก ํ๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋๋ค ( ๋จ์ ์ ๋ฉ๋๋ก ํ๊ฒ ย ๋๋ฌ ์ )ย Leave a person to do as they like
์ผ์ด ๋์ด๊ฐ๋ ๋๋ก ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋๋ค (์ผ์ด ๋์ด๊ฐ๋ ๋๋ก ๋๋ฌ ์ ) Leave the matter as it is
์ผ์ด ํ๋ฌ๊ฐ๋ ๋๋ก ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค๋๋ค ( ์ผ์ด ํ๋ฌ๊ฐ๋ ๋๋ก ๋๋ฌ ์ ) To let things slide
๋ ์ข ์ด๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋ฌ์ค! ( ๋ ์ข ์ด๊ฒ ๋๋ฌ์ค ์ !) Just let me live!
์ ๋ฉ๋๋ก ์ด๊ฒ ๋ด๋ฒ๋ ค ๋๋ค ( ์ ๋ฉ๋๋ก ์ด๊ฒ ๋๋ฌ์) To let a person live as they like/ To leave a person and let them live as they like
-๊ตฌ์์ & ๊ฐํ๋น
~๋จ ๋ง์ด์์.
This grammar point is used colloquially. It has two different meanings depending on the intonation of the speaker.ย
Conjugation follows the same rules as quoted speech; ๋๋จ for verbs ending in consonants, ใด๋จ for verbs ending in vowels and ๋จ for all adjectives. Also, (์ด)๋ ๋ง์ด์์ is used for nouns. In addition, past tense is attached before ๋จ, i.e ์/์/์๋จ ๋ง์ด์์. ย
1. Rising intonation (question). Used to check what the other person said because it is hard to believe. Translates toย โDo you mean that..?โย
Itโs meaning is similar to ~๋ค๋์?, however unlike ~๋ค๋์, you can reply with your feeling rather than directly copying the first speakers words. When expressing your feelingsย โ๊ทธ๋ ๊ฒโ is often used.
2. Level or falling intonation. Used by the original speaker to confirm, can be translated asย โI mean thatโฆ,ย โI am saying that..โย
๊ทธ๋ ๊ฐ ํ๊ตญ์ธ ์๋๋ ๋ง์ด์์.
๊ทธ ์ฌ๋์ ์ด๋ฏธ ํ๊ตญ์ผ๋ก ๋ ๋ฌ๋จ ๋ง์ด์์.
The imperative ending ๋ผ and the proposalย ending ์ can be combined with this grammar point (and used for either meaning)ย
๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๊ฐ๋ ๋ง์ด์ผ

Upper-Intermediate / Lesson 19: -๊ธด ํ๋ค
์๋ ํ์ธ์! Hey everyone! In this lesson, weโre going to learn about how to say something you hear in English a lot! In English, we say things likeย โyeah, it is expensive, but Iโm going to buy it anywayโ orย โI am busy, but I do want to hang out.โ We can say this in Korean using -๊ธด ํ๋ค! Letโs start!
What is -๊ธด ํ๋ค?
-๊ธด ํ๋ค is a shortened (and more common I think) version of -๊ธฐ๋ ํ๋ค. It is often used for when youโre admitting something, but showing a contrast at the same time. It is often paired with structures that show a contrast such as -์ง๋ง or -ใด/๋๋ฐ Hereโs a formula:
[verb / adjective stem] +ย ๊ธด ํ๋ค + [rest of sentence]ย
This is how you attach it regardless of tense! Just attach it to the stem!
Letโs see some sentences to better understand this!
๊ทธ ๋จ์๊ฐ ์์๊ธด ํ๋ฐ ์ฌ์ ์์ด์. = That man is handsome, but heโs rude.
So whatโs the difference between this sentence and โ๊ทธ ๋จ์๊ฐ ์์๊ฒผ๋๋ฐ ์ฌ์ ์์ด์โ? When you use -๊ธด ํ๋ค, it emphasizes that youโre admitting something, but also that youโre trying to defend your opinion. Itโs like when in English we say,ย โyeah, he IS handsome, but heโs rude.โ Youโre admitting that heโs good-looking, however, youโre also pointing out that heโs rude, and perhaps thatโs the reason why you donโt like him or something. Youโre admitting something, but youโre also defending another opinion that you have. Letโs see some more examples!
๊ทธ ์ํ๊ฐ ์ฌ๋ฏธ์๊ธฐ๋ ํ๋ฐ ๋๋ฌด ๊ธธ์ด์. = That movie is interesting, but itโs too long.ย
๊ฑ๊ฐ ์ฐฉํ๊ธด ํ๋ฐ ๋ด ์คํ์ผ ์๋. = He is nice, but heโs not my type.
์์ด์คํฌ๋ฆผ์ด ๋ง์๊ธด ํ์ง๋ง ๋จน์ผ๋ฉด ๋ฐฐ๊ฐ ์ํ์ ๋ชป ๋จน์ด์. = Ice cream is good, but I canโt eat it because it makes my stomach hurt.
-๊ธด + [verb / adjective]
Sometimes, youโll hear the first verb or adjective used to replace ํ๋ค in the middle. For example, instead of ๊ทธ ์ํ๊ฐ ์ฌ๋ฏธ์๊ธฐ๋ ํ๋ฐ ๋๋ฌด ๊ธธ์ด์, you might hearย ๊ทธ ์ํ๊ฐ ์ฌ๋ฏธ์๊ธด ์ฌ๋ฏธ์๋๋ฐ ๋๋ฌด ๊ธธ์ด์. This would translate to the same thing. I think it would give theย โbutโ part extra emphasis though, as inย โyeah, it IS interesting, BUT itโs too long.โ
Thatโs about all for this lesson! Hope it was helpful! ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ๊ณต๋ถํ๋ ๊ฒ ์ฌ๋ ต๊ธด ํ์ง๋ง ์ฌ๋ฏธ์์ด์! Studying Korean is challenging, but itโs lots of fun!! See you in the next lesson! ๋ค์์ ๋ ๋ด์!

What does the phrase "๊ฒ ๋๊ณ ?" mean?
Hello! So sorry for the wait. This grammar has two parts: -๊ฒ ๋ค and -๋๊ณ . In short, -๊ฒ ๋ค is a kind of future tense, -๋ is an informal way of asking a question, and -๋ combined with -๊ณ is a way of quoting a question. Thatโs all Iโm going to get into for those grammar points for now, but if youโre interested, check out my full-length lessons on them linked!
Letโs see an example with only -๋ from hinative:
์ด๊ฒ ๋๋? = Will this work?
Now if you add -๊ณ to the end of that, it becomes
์ด๊ฒ ๋๋๊ณ ? = He/She/They/You asked if it would work?
Literally, this is quoting what another person said. From what I read on hinative, however, -๊ฒ ๋๊ณ has a more aggressive nuance and is used to ask something like, โdid you really think that would work?โ Or โdid you just ask me if that would work?โ Something like that. Iโm not a native speaker so I canโt tell you the nuance for sure, but I hope this is kinda helpful at least! If anyone else has any better explanation, please share! Thanks so much for your patience! ํ์ดํ !
Hello, Iโm just wondering if ~์ด๋ผ๋ is a grammar point or if itโs only a colloquial thing?
Hi there! Itโs more grammar than it is colloquial, however, itโs used pretty casually! The ending -(์ด)๋ผ๋ is attached to nouns that the speaker focuses on in the specific sentence. From my understanding, you use -(์ด)๋ผ๋ when youโre:
surprised
angry
disappointed
embarrassed
worry
-์ด๋ผ๋ - attached to consonants-๋ผ๋ - attached to vowels
Some Examples:
[Worry]
์ ๋ฆผ: ํฐ์ผ๋ฌ์ด - Iโm in big troubleํฌ์ฃผ: ๋ฌด์จ์ผ์ด์ผ? ํฐ์ผ์ด๋ผ๋?? - whatโs going on? whatโs the problem??
[Dissapointment]
ํฌ์ฃผ:ย ์ฌํ์ ๋ฌผ์ ๊ธฐ๋ํ๋๋ฐ ๊ณ ์ ์ฌ์จ๊ฒ ์ด์ ๊ณ ๋ฆฌ ํ๋๋ผ๋โฆ - I was excited to get a souvenir, but all I got was a keychainโฆ
[Surprise]
ํฌ์ฃผ: ๋ญ์ผ? ์ด๊ฒ ์๋ฌผ์ด๋ผ๋! - what? this is a plant!
For verbs and adjectives, you use โ-๋ค๋โ:
๋ง์๋ค๋โฆ - Itโs deliciousโฆ
๋์๊ด์ด ์ ์๋๋ฝ๋ค๋? - why is the library noisy?
I hope I conveyed the proper emotion through my examples! If you still need help, donโt hesitate to shoot me a message so I can clear up the confusion! Happy Learning :)

Could you do a lesson on ๊ฒ ์ง and ์๋๊ฒ ์ง when used as a question and as a statement?
There are a lot of grammar points in here, so I'll give you an index:
-๊ฒ ๋ค; intention, will / observation, supposition
-์ง(์)/์ฃ ?; right?, isn't it?
์๋๋ค; to not be
N(์ด/๊ฐ) + ์๋๋ค + ์ง์
์๋๋ค + ๊ฒ ๋ค + ์ง์
I sincerely apologize for the length of this post! There's a lot to unpack in just those two phrases, so I hope this helps.
1. -๊ฒ ๋ค; intention, will (1) / observation, supposition (2)
Phrases youโll hear/know using -๊ฒ ๋ค:
(1) ์ ๋จน๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค โ Iโll eat well (aka: I intend to eat well)
(1) ๋ญ ๋์๊ฒ ์ต๋๊น? โ What will you eat? (๋์๋ง)
(1) ์ ํ๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค โ Iโll do my best!
(2) ๋ง์๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค! โ I suppose it is delicious
(2) ํผ๊ณคํ๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค โ I suppose you're tired
(2) ๋ด์ผ ๋น๊ฐ ์ค๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค! - I suppose it's going to rain tomorrow
When to use -๊ฒ ๋ค:
Use it for yourself when you want to express first-person intent or will
If you do this, then remember that itโs more common and natural to use -๊ฒ ๋ค with formal grammatical patterns (thatโs why you see -(์ค)ใ ๋๋ค in all the examples)
This pattern also puts more emphasis on the intention than the simpler (์ผ)ใน ๊ฒ์ด๋ค future tense; if you use the -๊ฒ ๋ค pattern, you mean it, essentially.
Use it when you want to make an observation towards someone or something else
Use it when inquiring about another personโs intent or will
All that said, you can use -(์ผ)ใน ๊ฒ์ด๋ค to express a future action in a less formal situation.
๋ญ ๋จน์ ๊ฑฐ์ผ? (with friends) vs. ๋ญ ๋์๊ฒ ์ต๋๊น? (as the server)
Note: you can use this pattern in lower formality situations (as an example, ํ๋ค๊ฒ ์ด; it seems difficult), it's completely okay! It's just more common to use -๊ฒ ์ต๋๋ค when talking about the intended future in a formal situation.
2. -์ง(์)/์ฃ ; right(?), isn't it?
This is used to ask for confirmation from the speaker about an observation! For us Canadians, this is the "eh?" we love so dearly. You can use this as a statement, to agree with the speaker. The difference between ์ง์ and ์ฃ is just pronunciation; they're the exact same thing. Examples:
์ถฅ์ฃ ? - it's cold, isn't it? (Canadian translation: it's cold, eh?)
์ธ๊ตญ์ธ๋ค์ ํ๊ตญ์์ ์ผํ๊ธฐ ํ๋ค์ง์? - it's hard for foreigners to work in Korea, right?
์๊ณ ์์ฃ ? - you know that, right?
๋น๊ทผ์ด์ง - right, of course! (informal)
3. ์๋๋ค; to not be
This is pretty self-explanatory. It's the opposite of ์ด๋ค! When using this verb, make sure you use ์ด/๊ฐ particles! Here are some examples:
๊ทธ ๋จ์๋ ๋ฐฐ์ฐ๊ฐ ์๋์์ - he's not an actor
ํ์์ด ์๋ ์! - I'm not a student
๋ถ์๊ฐ ์๋์์? - you're not rich?
4. N(์ด/๊ฐ) + ์๋๋ค + ์ง์
If we combine ์๋๋ค and ์ง์ we can get sentences that express a negative statement to be confirmed. It's best to illustrate this with examples:
๋๋ด์ด ์๋์ฃ ? - you're not joking, right?
๋ถ์๊ฐ ์๋์ง์? - you're not rich, are you?
ํ๊ตญ์ธ์ด ์๋์ฃ ? - you're not Korean, right?
Note: when answering these questions, you have to answer the Korean way; we have to think of if we agree or disagree with the statement. Look hereย for examples.
5. ์๋๋ค + ๊ฒ ๋ค + ์ง์
Final grammar point! This is also pretty self-explanatory. As we know, -๊ฒ ๋ค is used to express an observation or supposition. When we attach -์ง์, we are expressing that we need the listener to agree with our future observation. Examples:
-๊ฒ ๋ค + ์ง์
์ฝ๊ฒ ์ฃ ? - I suppose it's gonna be easy, right?
๋ค์ ์ฃผ์ ํ๊ตญ์ด ์ํ์ ์ด๋ ต๊ฒ ์ฃ ? - The Korean test next week will be hard, right?
When adding ์๋๋ค to ๊ฒ ์ง(์)/์ฃ , we are expressing a statement that we (the speaker) believe is a true observation.
Here are examples:
์ฝ๋ก๋ ๋๋ฌธ์ ํ๊ตญ์ ๊ฐ๋ ๊ฒ ์๋๊ฒ ์ฃ ? - you aren't going to Korea because of CoVid, right?
๊ฐ๊ธฐ์ ๊ฑธ๋ ธ๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ ํ๊ต์ ์ค๋ ๊ฒ ์๋์๊ฒ ์ง์? - you didn't come to school because you caught a cold, right?
If you disagree with these statements, you are more than welcome to say so. The question/statement is just an observation that the speaker believes to be true. For example, you could say:
A: ์ฝ๋ก๋ ๋๋ฌธ์ ํ๊ตญ์ ๊ฐ๋ ๊ฒ ์๋๊ฒ ์ฃ ? B: ์๋์, ๋์ด ์์ด์ ํ๊ตญ์ ๋ชป ๊ฐ๊ฑฐ๋ ์ - No (I disagree that it's because of CoVid), I can't go because I don't have money.
BONUS:
~(์ผ)๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋ค; I hope ~
You can use this when you want to express the hopefulness of something. The literal translation is "it would be good if~". Here are some examples:
ํ๊ตญ์ ๊ฐ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์ - I hope to go to Korea
์๋์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์ - I hope it goes well
์์ ํ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ์ด์ - I hope I win a prize/award
Ooof!! Finally at the end! Hope this answered your question! As always, if there's anything that you still don't understand, you're more than welcome to send me a pm and we can sort it out together!
Happy Learning :)
