Most Valuble Tips
Tip #1: Get out of your comfort zone! You're at a new university with so many opportunities, get out & see what it has to offer. Try something new every week, even if it's just a new club or an interesting restaurant. Get involved and make connections with people in different areas. Tip #2: Stay focused! Don't get lost in all the college hustle and bustle. I know there are parties every week and always something to distract you on campus but remember why you are here, to get a degree & GRADUATE! Focus on your schoolwork first and party second! Tip #3: Career Fairs! I know that sounds boring but it is super helpful in the long run. They provid you with what the real world is like. Gets you prepared for interviews and working in the real world after college!

Tip #3: Perfect your resume
Coming into the University of Illinois as a junior transfer student, I had never created a resume for myself. I soon realized, however, that I was not going to be able to get away with that much longer. Any hopes I have of landing a great job or internship all start with handing over a resume.Â
Creating a resume can seem tricky and overwhelming, but we have many great resources on campus to help you out. The Career Center offers a "Winning Resume and Cover Letters" workshop multiple times a week, as well as the option to have it critiqued by someone one-on-one.
Your resume is the first thing to represent you when applying for an internship or job. Making sure it is perfected and accurately markets your strengths and abilities is the best way to ensure that you allow yourself to reach your full potential.
Tip #2: I-Link
I-Link is a great tool to use for finding jobs and internships. Employers post on I-Link specifically looking for University of Illinois students to fill their positions, so you are competing with a much smaller pool of applicants. There's even an option to upload your resume, which then allows potential employers to view it and reach out to you specifically
Being a transfer student, we have to adjust to a new school very quickly. This means all new information, new resources, new online databases, new everything. I hadn't even heard of I-Link until about a month into my first semester. If this post is the first time you are hearing of I-Link as well, now is the perfect time to sign up! If this isn't your first time hearing of it, now is still a great time to create an account and start building your professional career.

In order to find the right internship for you, there are a few steps you may need to take:
Gain a clear focus of the types of positions you are seeking
Research opportunities within those areas
Review your resume and ensure it markets you the best
Practice your interview skills
Gain focus: Think about your major, skills, and ultimate career goals. You can seek advice by asking a career counselor or your professors where students in your major most often intern. Keep your ultimate career goal in mind!
Research: Organize a list of companies that match the skills you want to gain, as well as can help you reach your future goals. There are many resources to help you with this: I-LINK, U-Intern, and the Job Shadow Program are all great places to start
Resume and interview: Attend a resume workshop or schedule a time to have your resume critiqued. The Career Center offers both of these options and is a great resource here at UIUC! Also, you can sign up to have a mock interview if you believe your skills may be a little rusty.
