long rant about anime INCOMING. like. so long.
there is something so powerful about nostalgic anime or things from the past. SPECIFICALLY 2000’s to 2010’s ANIME HITS SO DIFFERENT. the stuff theyre putting out now is really a lot of hit or miss, overused troupes, mid writing, same formulaic stuff…. IT GETS BORING.
i have my gripes with harem and isekai and just how boring it gets with each overused troupe, everything is so predictable, and frankly ITS ALSO HOW I FEEL ABOUT SO MUCH SHOUNEN ANIME OUT THESE DAYS. isekai: theres always some weird thing that makes the main character special and overpowered, for some reason lots of big boobied simple characters with no depth, fanservice central, boring boring boring. theres some gems out there like mushoku tensei, slime was pretty good but set the standard and everything else just seems the same, iconic ones like everyone in isekai quartet (ainz, rezero, tanya, etc. u get what i mean) but frankly, theyre really just pumping out some MID garbage. and while i get it: some shows just SUCK but are SO AWESOME that u just enjoy it… but as for me? its just NOT my cup of tea.
then theres harem… oh harem………. its just bad. theres a lot of shows that count as harem that i actually LOVE and enjoy like MakeIne (great show), oresuki, konosuba technically lumfao!, BUT. with like every great show that counts as a harem, theres like 10 other shows that hit the mark completely. and i get it, not every company can come out with ONLY certified bangers,
BUT CMON THE GOLDEN ERA FOR ME IN ANIME WAS SOOOO THE 2000’s AND 2010’s. ESP IN SHOUJO lumfao. LIKE ALL THE MOST ICONIC BEAUTIFUL AMAZING GROUNDBREAKING ANIME WAS CULTIVATED DURING THEN. not every anime was heavily fanserviced with big boobies, not every shoujo was poorly written “hes so big… and he cares for me…!!!”, not every harem was panties in my face (though admittedly many of them were…), men who are main characters had GUY FRIENDS, and maybe even GIRLS WHO ARE ACTUALLY JUST FRIENDS AND NOT LOVE INTERESTS, shows had BACKGROUND CHARACTERS AND MINOR CHARACTERS THAT ARE ACTUALLY INTERESTING.
kaminomi is one of my top fave harem of all time, with technically ohshc being a “reverse harem”, theres just sooo much iconic anime that really cant be beat from the 2000s-2010s era for me.
this is death note era, nana era, ouran era, jjba era, chobits, toradora, kaminomi, little busters, angel beats, code geass, higurashi when they cry, clannad, steins gate, monogatari, hetalia (oh gosh), (late 2010’s-2020’s~soso) ssss.gridman/dynazenon/universe (my goat currently), spice and wolf, engaged to the unidentified, kamisama kiss, naruto and dbz (even tho dbz is like way old and so is jjba but yk.), gintama, not all but a LOT of some of the most iconic ghibli films imo, full metal, my little monster, MADOKA MAGICA, HARUHISUZUMIYA.. LIKE THE LIST GOES ON. ARGUABLY SOME OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ANIME OF ALL TIME. EVEN IF I HAVENT SEEN WHAT SOME PEOPLE SAY IS THE GOAT OF ANIME IT PROBABLY AIRED DURING THIS ERA. AND IM NOT EVEN INCLUDING ANY OF MY FAVE ANIME MOVIES SAD AND NOT SAD (besides ghibli)
but do i think there arent any good gems out there right now? oh nah theres a few good ones out rn. but the way its looking. lowkey. i think we’re only gonna be getting mostly mid ones…… like sure the animation quality is fantastic! the overworked animators are doing great, but. some of these shows are just plain dog water. like i cant get through so many of these shows. like yeah jjk is aight, chainsaw man was dubious!!, dandadan is a fun watch, but for SOME REASON. none of these shows hit like freaking early 2000s and early 2010’s anime. like instantly it also hits when there’s like violin and divine ahh soundtrack like DANG!!! YOU DID NOT NEED TO HIT THAT HARD!!! especially madoka magica and kaminomi.
can i just talk about how good kaminomi is too btw. its the only respectful harem i know, keima is actually a main character worth loving with substance more than a character troupe, the girls are so much more than what they look, keima helps them all and ELSIE IS ACTUALLY JUST A SISTER CHARACTER AND NOTHING ELSE. GENUINELY SHE IS JUST ELSIE MY GOAT. and like in toradora each of the characters are ACTUALLY INTERESTING!!!! like taiga and ryuji’s progression, the arcs of minorin and freaking glasses (even tho their arcs may be weakly written, at least they have more depth than most!) and the fact our main character actually has a guy friend and like. not some weird little girl sister character? its refreshing. its so refreshing!!!!!! does toradora count as a harem? lul. like wow!! these characters are people!!!
actual people! not just boobs or overpowered MC who everyone likes for NO REASON!
lowkey, i think they hit it out the park when VNs were being produced in anime. storylines with serious characters and plot, the characters have feelings and goals and so much more emotion. these recent years its a lot of light novels, but so simple. like
they all have one shtick they follow: “in another world without my books” “in another world WITH a cellphone.” “im the only guy who can level up and im overpowered” “i have a useless skill that actually isnt useless at all and im overpowered!” like wow, just how many themes are we exploring this time around. i did like “kumo desuga, nanika?!” a lot but frankly bc it was one of the like first 5 super quirky isekai i’d watched at the time. (and it was super likeable lol)
but like. dude. theres a lot that just really isnt even likeable character wise, story wise, and even like MAIN STORY TITLE wise. rent-a-girlfriend’s MC sucked actual dookie nuts, that one guys love sickness is just “wow! this girls different and not into me… i want her….” rehashed, 7th time loop is really just SO BORING. no substance, mc is overpowered, men are deeply in love with her for no reason besides “shes just sooo different and interesting from other women…. i want her…”
maybe all these are fr just self inserts and feel good media. heres some stuff you said you looooved to eat up but slopped up on your plate! enjoy!!! and…. LOWKEY. PEOPLE DO JUST EAT RHE SLOP. and you can. im just tired of the slop my bro.
admittedly theres slop thats poorly written but just SO ENJOYABLE AND AWESOME THAT ITS JUST SO GOOD. like… the first half of ssss.dynazenon sucked but. THE OTHER HALF AND GRIDMAN UNIVERSE JUST WAS SO AWESOME THE FIGHTING AND KAIJU AND HIKARU MIDORIKAWA (tehe! >.の), even though the loose ends were tied pretty poorly. spoilers but AKANE AND ALEXIS KREB COMING BACK??? OUGHHGHSHS SO GOATED I DONT EVEN CARE THEY WERE SO ENJOYABLE IT WAS AWESOME TO HAVE THEM BACK EVEN IF THIS JAWN DIDNT MAKE SENSE !!!!
for years ive been super into seiyuu, vocaloid, vtubers, even japanese edm, and frankly just consuming whatever other japanese media that i can shoot into my eyeballs, into my retinas, and let hit my eardrums (what a blessing.)
and BOY!!! LET ME TELL YOU THE COMMUNITIES AND RICHNESS OF CERTAIN SHOWS AND FANDOMS IN JAPAN IT WAS TIGHT BACK THEN. shout out Little Busters radio CD (ナツメブラザーズ(21)) and gridman universe drama CDs for opening my eyes. idk why it just hits so different from the stuff everybodies pumpin out. hell, even older seiyuu events. and MAN!!! ECEN THESE JUST HIT DIFFERENT FROM THE 2000’s AND 2010’s. AAAREGHHHH I WISH !!! I WAS BORN A LITTLE BEFORE…. AND GOT TO BE FULLY CONSCIOUS WHEN THESE THINGS HAPPENED…
but. anyways. thats kind of all for now. if i have more to rant about like music, other media, musicals, colin firth, seiyuu like hikaru midorikawa, etc. etc. i probably will do this again or make a part two. but thats all thats on my mind my goats. bye bye
