The nearly-stifling heat of summer drifted around them, cooled by the night. Remus and Sirius sat atop a grassy hill, smiles decorating their faces and sweat beading along their hairlines.

Sirius leaned back into the ground, resting on his elbows and looking up into the starry sky. Remus copied him so they were side-by-side once more. They spent a few moments in silence, pondering the vast expanse of space before them.

Sirius broke the silence first. “Do you ever think, Moony,” he nearly whispered. “Maybe there’s something connecting you and I? An invisible string, perhaps, or a sort of… gravity pulling us together?”

“Why do you ask?” Remus tilted his head inquisitively.

“I can’t think of any universe in which I don’t have you.”

Remus sat up, reaching for Sirius, leaning in for a feather-soft press of lips.

“You’ll always have me, darling.”

“No.” Remus shook his head. “No, I’m not joining in your water fight.”

“Why not?” James whined, dodging an Aguamenti from Sirius. “It’s fun, and it’s hot out!”

“Because… I’m not really feeling it? What do you want me to say, Prongs?”

“I don’t know, just- Wormtail, you traitor!” James cried, attention subverted by the fact that Peter had just gotten him in the back with a jet of water.

Peter shrugged. “Oops.”

The fight restarted with renewed vigor, Remus sidestepping all of the stray spells.

Eventually, there was a lull. Sirius sauntered over, sopping wet and smiling with a devious glint in his eyes.

“Give me a hug?” he asked. “Or a kiss for your poor old Padfoot?”

Remus obliged, softly pecking Sirius on the lips. And then-

Well, in hindsight, maybe he should have seen the wand in Sirius’s hand.

The spell hit him, rendering him completely drenched. He spluttered, the strange feeling of having water dumped on him instantaneously making him shiver.

“Come on,” he sighed, once he had regained his wits. “Sirius…”

“We wanted a fourth person, Moons. Come on, please?” Sirius practically begged, making puppy eyes at him.

Remus smiled. “Oh, alright. Only ‘cause I’m wet now anyways.”
