Dog booties are a really special and ancient tool in aiding arctic dogs comfort that was invented by the Inuit, the indigenous people in the arctic. These dogs were far from babied: they lived outside and often had to fend for themself in summer, they pulled sledges full of freight for miles in nasty arctic temperature and weather. And yet the Inuit have the ultimate respect for these dogs, their dogs were and are instrumental in helping human beings not only survive in the arctic, but THRIVE in the arctic. And part of that respect was making sure your dogs were comfortable….in dog booties (boy puts seal skin booties on a Qimmiq (Canadian Inuit Sled Dog) in 1951, above).  Here is a collection of traditional dog keeping knowledge by Inuit elders collected by Kerrie Ann Shannon and Winner of the 3rd annual ARCUS* Award for Arctic Research Excellence, 1999.
