Feb. 6, 1978: In New York City, gale-force winds buffeted Midtown pedestrians during a storm that forced motorists to abandon their cars and dropped more than 16 inches of snow on the city. “In Manhattan, midtown hotels reported virtually every room rented by noon to people who had decided they would not try to go back home last night,” The Times reported. At night, deep in the mountains, I sit in meditation The affairs of men never reach here; Everything is quiet and empty, All the incense has been swallowed up By the endless night. My robe has become a garment of dew. Unable to sleep I walk out into the woods— Suddenly, above the highest peak, The full moon appears. - Hakuin (1686-1768)

This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

So to clear things up, psychedelics and other mind altering substances (pot) are bad? Imo I think if used sparingly and carefully they can help aid in enlightenment....What's your take?
This is the last response I will say on this matter…
We already live in a world of illusion and ignorance, so why would you take mind-altering substances to take you deeper into a world of more illusion? Seems counter-productive…
If the Buddha thought drugs would aid in enlightenment, then he wouldn’t have made a precept to abstain from it.
Smile and be well!
How are you so sure that mind altering substances (ayahuasca, psilocybin, mdma, etc) used in sacred or therapeutic ways put you in a state of delusion?
Is it possible that sacred medicines used properly can temporarily dissolve the ego resulting in a greater connection to the universe? Is it also possible that they might aid an individual in connecting with a higher power or intelligence in a way that profoundly and positively changes their outlook?
There is evidence in Hindu Vedic texts that people used sacred plants for the reasons I just mentioned.
There is a lot o overlap between Hinduism and Buddhism (obviously since Buddhism came after Hinduism) and I wouldn't be surprised if Buddhists over time took sacred plants despite the fifth precept.
I don't think the Buddha would have a problem with it either since he always said to question even what has taught and if the experience would heal and enhance their meditation.
Strict Buddhism isn't the end all be all and people can combine aspects of different religions and practices to enhance their lives.
Some might say believing in reincarnation is delusional or that the idea of enlightenment is delusion or that a place called nirvana is delusional etc.
Got damn son, what a conditioned view you have with mind-altering substances! May your future lives see into the nature of truth and transcend the ego!
May your future lives realize that mind-altering substances won’t make you any wiser.
Smile and be well!
You say you are a "truth seeker". Do you really believe Buddhism and the 5th precept are the only ways to seek truth?
Do you not think indigenous cultures have also sought and found truth(s) by using sacred plant medicines?
Look up ayahuasca and people's experiences and realize there are many different ways to seek truth and , more importantly, heal the mind.
