AB 1949 (personal information for users under 18) and AB 3080 (Age Verification of NSFW sites and minor-unsafe item online purchases) have both been moved from the Senate Rules Committee and into the Senate Judiciary Committee. As of right now, neither has a set hearing date on the Judiciary's Agenda. So if you want to send letters of opposition, you can begin planning out your wording while continuing to send word in opposition to your California Senate representatives.

Remember that committees will only accept letters in opposition or support. Do not add any caveats about conditions for change. Keep it simple and to the point, that you are in opposition of these bills and why.

SB 976 (Social Media Addiction) remains in the Assembly on first reading Held At Desk. No new information as of yet. So continue sending word to your Assembly representatives on this one as usual.

This means that KOSA will be discussed and reviewed. HOWEVER, this does not necessarily mean that it will be voted on. There is a potential for it though.

KOSA still has not went through senate, however. It will need to pass both the Senate and the House in order to become law.

BAD INTERNET BILLS

SB 976 is nominally a bill to fight against social media addiction for young people, with such "safety" features as not allowing notifications to come through on school days and school nights and removing addictive feed algorithms for minors without parental permission.

But what is there when you read between the lines is that they'll have to determine who's a minor and who's an adult on social media platforms for Everyone. Which means age verification will likely be the default norm for all platforms in California if it passes. If only because it would make things easier for the platforms to minimize their liability. That or employ extremely invasive analysis of people's posting, or the possibility of biometric data being taken.

This bill has just passed through the suspense file, and the deadline for bills to pass their house of origin is this week. So if we want to stop this in the Senate we only have this week to do it.

Same goes for AB 1949, a bill ironically meant to limit data harvesting and sale for users under 18. When such a thing should really become the norm for any websites by this point in time. It should also be one of the bills that will be pushed by the Assembly this coming week.

Find your reps and call, fax, and email them as much as you can. Make those voices heard and get them to know what you don't want.

But the fight is not over yet. We have not succeeded in the Senate, so we will take this fight to the Assembly. Let us do our best to take this on, and tell the representatives that we do not approve of this bill.
