A group of the Advanced Printmaking students this semester (Fall 2014) are working with visiting artist Brad Tucker (his website is here, and his tumblr blog is bradtuckerbadtrucker, check'em out!

These are some of the experimental trial proofs we've just started with. Brad cut some shapes out of normal window screen. These were exposed onto normal screens for screen printing. When the layers are overlaid some pretty crazy moiré happens. We're very excited about the possibilities.

All proceeds from the sale of this portfolio subsidize student scholarships and the travel of students to professional conferences and exhibitions.

This suite's theme is "ornament."

Suites 1 through 5 are available for purchase, and are published in clamshell boxes covered with Irish book cloth, each made by Mrs. Marilyn Worrix at the McMinnville Center for the Book Arts, McMinnville, Oregon. Portfolio 6 will be given to Mrs. Worrix for her time and skill. Portfolios 7 through 35 reside in the ownership of the participants and the archives of Texas State University-San Marcos.

The participants are students, instructors, and visiting artists to Texas State.

Printmakers Open Forum is pleased to announce its first international printmaking expedition!

We will join the city of Raahe (just south of the arctic circle) in celebrating the Summer Solstice by creating prints in the spirit of the sun at the printshopGRAFIIKANPAJA - AAVA.

GRAFIIKANPAJA - AAVA is located in Raahe, Finland right next to the sea. It is run by Raija Korpilla and Juha Laakso. GRAFIIKANPAJA - AAVA translates as the (Open) House of Printmaking - the Finnish word “aava” means “vast / open”. Raija and Juha use this word to represent their way to observe the phenomena surrounding us. What a perfect match for Printmakers Open Forum!

Master printers, Shelley Thorstensen, Juha Laasko and Raija Korppila will co-teach Print The Midnight Sun. They will teach photoetching (ImagOn), Pronto plate lithography, collagraph, multiple plate printing with chine colle, monoprint, and a host of printmaking color techiniques.

Our group lodging is a super-clean Finnish cottage with open floor plans, living room area, kitchen and sauna, just steps from the sea. The average temperature during the Solstice is 70F! Raahe is a favorite destination for the Finnish who will be celebrating the Solstice with lots of public events over several days. We’re planning a day trip to a little island called Tasku (“Pocket” in English). It is a beautiful place with a beach. We’ll sketch, take pictures, swim and have a picnic. And of course,we’ll go to The Old Town and the Historic Museum in Raahe.

We invite you to come adventure, learn, print and experience the celebration of the 24 hours of sun on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia above northern Europe’s Baltic Sea.

Course dates: June 21 - June 28, 2014

Workshop cost: $1350. Includes workshop, lodging, breakfast and lunch. Bring a non-workshop friend! Their cost is $950.

Nick and Yuko were an incredible presence in the shop for a number of years, and both got pieces accepted into IPCNY. I will post some shots of their work soon.
