I introduce you Eridian Grace post-fossilisation (still don't have a name for this au)

Here are two versions one with scratch marks on his limbs,

And one without it,

I tried to make the colours as accurate I can get to an actual opal fossil but this is what I can do.

For Grace's eridian design he actually has two shells by technicality, he's outer shell is made up of well rocks (listen I don't know much about minerals okay), while his internal shell which is the exposed area on his head is made up of opal.

For some unknown reason he is able to survive the domes atmosphere despite being an eridian now, although he isn't able to handle Erid's atmosphere but for some reason with light exposure to the atmosphere over time his rocky outer shell would harden? and adapt to it so he can leave the dome.

But the exposed area of his internal shell doesn't harden? so Rocky made him a special pair of xenonite google/helmet to protect that area.(Basically Rocky made him eridian size glasses)

His front limbs are fused for unknown reasons but he has gotten used to them. Speaking of limbs it took him about 3 weeks to get used to walking on all fours with four legs?hands?

one thing from project hail mary the book that i really wish theyd made clear in the movie is that when grace makes the decision to save rocky instead of go back to earth, he is prepared to die. like i understand why the movie had to cut a lot from the book for pacing and it wasnt exactly necessary to include the whole sub-subplot where rocky and grace figure out that there is nothing on erid that is safe for humans to consume, but it would have been worth a passing mention at some point, because grace goes back for rocky knowing that even if rocky takes him to erid, he will still die there, because there is nothing he can eat. the only reason he survives is by eating taumoeba, which is a solution rocky comes up with only after grace saves him and admits to him that he came to his rescue fully prepared to die.

the movie really breezes past rocky's rescue and the time skip, and it never explains why choosing to save rocky is so monumental in the first place: it answers the central question grace is grappling with for the whole movie. "who would i die for?" he doesn't just go back for rocky because it's the right thing to do. he sacrifices himself to save rocky. he is ready to die if it means rocky will live.

Love love love that Grace is staring at the "who would you die for?" line on his whiteboard right before Rocky shows up in his xenonite container. Yes hello here is someone so important to you that you would sacrifice your life for him. He's in a hamster ball on your doorstep and he's about to run into your spaceship and insult your house and wreck your shit. You would die for him in every lifetime, and only because of that do you end up living.

I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.

something that I can't really stop thinking about is the fact that grace would have never been apart of the project hail mary mission if he hadnt convinced stratt to let him keep doing it. the butterfly effect has always fascinated me, but especially now.

does grace realize how much he truly did for the earth, even before he got sent to space? figuring out how astrophage worked, how to breed it, all the logistics of it. he was basically second most important on the project, stratt's right hand man for getting things done, and I don't think he even really knew

then of course, he never would have gotten sent to space if he hadn't joined the mission. where would he be then, still a middle school teacher, and would the lab still have blown up and killed the crew that was supposed to go? would they have figured it out as quickly as they did without him? he becomes the lead on astrophage research then is sent into space on a whim against his will because there is no one else but him. what would happen if he had said no in the beginning?
