i remember being little and playing pretend with friends, and while the rest of them had the opportunity to pick and choose which character they liked the most, i was always designated one specific character. whatever we were roleplaying, i always had to be given the token minority.

it bothered me in more ways than one because firstly, we are all human, so why wouldn’t i be able to relate to any character regardless of race?

and secondly, why was there only ever one minority character for me to be forced to relate to?

i think about my experience with this whenever somebody brings up the topic of forced diversity. when you think about the grandness of this Earth, and everything on it, I would say we are light years behind in terms of diversity in media.
