katniss has always known haymitch. just not in the normal sense, not until recently. as a young girl he’d always been a drunk victor who had bared his own scars like warnings to everyone in district twelve. on stage during reapings he always put on some show with his drunken theatrics that would tick off the escort, effie trinket. if you asked katniss now what she thought of haymitch abernathy she’d tell you he was a drunk who made sure she lived to see another sunrise. there wasn’t a doubt that she held him close to her heart under a guise of distaste.

quiet and cold. no game. slipping back beneath the fence, snow crunching beneath her boots as she marched back into the district. she could run, she’s sure she could survive on her own out there—but she wouldn’t dare risk the lives of those she loves. she doesn’t go home, not yet. she left when the moon was still lighting up the night sky, now it had faded and the sun was rising. she quietly returned to her ‘ place ’ in victor’s village, it still left a sour taste in her mouth. this was not her home. the floorboards weren’t worn, walls weren’t left with small carvings. her jaw clenched and before she knew it she was on the steps of abernathy’s house.

today was the day the tour would be starting. she hated speaking to crowds, the eyes on her, the lies she would surely have to tell. peeta was the one who had a way with words, a way with people. everyone knew that. she looked over the door to his house. the wood stained and it was clear the doorknob had been replaced. she turned the knob and let herself in, closing the door behind herself. greeted with a mess that was worse than the ones prim used to make as a baby. she peered into the kitchen, dishes stacked high and empty bottles scattered on the floor. a lump lay against the table, a half empty bottle beside it. of course. she walked towards him, floorboards groaning beneath her weight. she swiped the bottle, pouring the remaining liquid onto the sleeping man.

🪶 ~ how do they laugh?

katniss rarely laughs. mostly she just smiles or chuckles. the only people who have seen her actually laugh has been family. that includes gale, haymitch & peeta. when katniss does laugh.. she often snorts and covers her mouth with her hand. her laugh is the kind that makes others laugh.
