âOh. Um, okay, thatâs⌠Good at least.â At least they werenât dead. For now. She snorted at the head bit, if only they knewâŚÂ âYeah, Iâve heard the spiel before. Sometimes a need for speed canât be beat, yâknow?â She snickered, forgetting her general embarrassment at the situation and hunger for a moment. âI am real sorry, though. I turned the corner, and whammo. Whoopsidaisy.â
Donât even ask their name, thatâs a terrible idea, donât think about how easy it would be, donât do it. âSo, um⌠This is like, weird and stuff, right? Or is that just meâŚâ She looked away, fiddling with her ponytail. âIs there somethinâ I can do to like, make it up to you? I feel kinda bad⌠Your skirts are all dirty and stuff.â
They shrugged.âYeah, itâs kind of a thing around here. Iâve had the spiel more than my fair share of times.â Spotting their phone on the concrete, they bent down and snagged it before it could get muddy or wet or skated over. âNeed for speed, huh?â Nao smiled. Hadnât heard that line in a while; there wasnât much speed on the island. âDonât worry about it, really. Iâm a big baby.â
After a short lull, and they did mean short, the stranger seemed to scramble again. Maybe their social skills had dulled after talking to themselves so much, but they really didnât think it was that awkward. They just smiled up at her, trying to bring them both to some level of normalcy. âI mean, you donât need to, but if youâre offering, I could go for a coffee. Or a white chai. Or.. You know what, Iâll just pick later.â
