What To Do If You Find A Beached Cetacean
If you are ever out by the coast and are the first to happen upon a stranded or beached whale, dolphin, or porpoise, please take these steps to ensure the animal gets the help they need!
Before anything, call a local rescue or stranding network! A list of these networks for America can be found here. Do this before doing anything else, the faster you can notify professionals to come for help the better.
Do not try to push the animal back into the water! They beached for a reason, and if they are ill or needing medical attention and you push them back into the water, they could re-strand and stress/injure themselves further, or they could go off and eventually die of whatever was ailing them.
Do not try to touch the animal or get close unless necessary. They are large, wild predators and are likely in a certain mode of survival, which could lead to injury for you. Itâs best to keep yourself safe and stay far enough back that if the animal were to bite or thrash, you are not in the way. If the animal is in a situation that requires you to get near, do so with care and have volunteers assist you.
Ensure the animal can breathe. If their blowhole is covered or not in a position that allows them full access to air, you may need to flip or adjust the animal. Only do this if you feel comfortable and with the utmost self preservation.
Try to keep the crowd away and quiet. A noisy crowd of barking dogs, yelling adults, and screaming children will only stress and panic the animal more. Keep everyone else at a safe distance and try to keep everyone calm and noise levels down.
Log the time, physical appearance, condition of the animal, and take photos. Any information you can gather while waiting for the rescue team is essential in giving them more information to help the animal.
Try to gather some wet towels and carefully drape them over the animal while keeping as much distance as you can. If the animal is thrashing wildly or acting aversively to any advance, back off immediately and skip this step. Itâs not worth risking your safety.
Place a tarp tent over the animal if any beach goers have one nearby. Keeping the animal out of the sun is ideal so they can avoid sunburn. They are not used to being exposed to such high intensity rays for long amounts of time.
Keep waiting for help to arrive, and keep logging behavior and condition of the animal.
So important tho

Happy Earth Day everyone!
2015 is the year we should all make a pact to make a difference. You can go online right now and order a tshirt from EarthDay.org and theyâll plant 7 trees from the money youâve paid. Itâs nice to give, but itâs even nicer to give-and-get!
Be kind to nature, youâre a part of it.
Incredible! We recommend you all give it a watch.
Very inspiring stuff.

The environmental impact of oysters, in one photo
The water in both tanks came from the same source. The one on the right has bivalves. Not only do oysters naturally filter the waters in which they live, they can even protect humans from destructive hurricanes. For more, read about New Yorkâs efforts to bring back oyster populations in the once-toxic Hudson River.
Delicious AND helpful. Who knew?
(photo via Steve Vilnit on Twitter)
Amazing stuff! Of course, we do have to be careful of invasive oyster species that can out-compete native organisms. In general though, oysters sure know how to clean up their act!
A stepping stone to fighting the shark-finning dilemma? Go scientists!
Speaking of fins, we'd like to give a huge cheer for Rob Stewart (director of the fantastic documentary "Sharkwater") who is currently cycling across France in a Spandex Shark Costume to raise money! We salute you and your #finfree campaign!

We hope you're all having a great shark week!

Ever wonder how dangerous sharks REALLY are?
DNews informs us of 6 creatures that are way more dangerous than sharks - and some of them may surprise you.
We can sometimes be annoyed at the "mockumentaries" that the Discovery Channels tend to display during shark week, but thankfully this video addition to the Discovery Network is interesting, informative and truthful.
We hope you're all having a happy shark week!

HAPPY SHARK WEEK!
Some of us aren't huge fans of the Discovery Channel's way of celebrating sharks, so instead of making them seem fierce or debating the existence of a Megalodon we're going to show you a different scientific video on sharks every day of the week!
And remember - live every week like it's shark week!

"The Antarctic icefish live in water colder than freezing â 2 degrees below zero Centigrade.
Ocean water doesnât freeze at this temperature because itâs full of salt. The blood of the icefish is less salty than seawater; instead, it keeps itself from freezing by using ice proteins, sometimes called antifreeze proteins, that attach to ice crystals forming in the blood stream.
Once the ice crystals are coated with antifreeze protein, they canât stick together, so they donât grow. The icefish of the Antarctic have used this adaptation to become very successful â making up 95% of the fish biomass around Antarctica.

The meat from dozens of slaughtered sharks off UK coastline could be illegally passed off as huss in fish & chip shops across the country.
Local resident Kevin Parker came across the heads and butchered bodies of over 60 smooth-hound sharks. On his discovery he said "I was about to check on my boat when I found myself among a big pile of about 50 or 60 shark heads. Then, just a bit further up, there were even more. There were little pups in there as well [...]Â Iâve lived on the island all my life and Iâve never seen anything like this. I was just devastated.â
A photo of the severed remains of the sharks has made its way to Facebook and Twitter. You can view the picture via the link below but viewer discretion is advised. There is no blood in the picture but there are a lot of shark heads and shark skin. You can view the image HERE.
These creatures were dumped near the Isle of Wight coastline and anglers in the local area are furious.
These sharks are not dangerous to humans and are also not usually caught for human consumption in the UK. However, once the fish are skinned, their meat can easily be passed off as huss (a.k.a dogfish or catfish). But smooth-hound sharks are nowhere near as common as huss and are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN.
Make sure your local fish & chip shop are buying their produce from reputable sources, especially if you live in and around the Isle of Wight. If you would like any more information, don't hesitate to contact us.

Glad to see a blog like this. I watched blackfish and was so stunned. The general public really needs to know about what Seaworld really does.
Thank you, we're very glad that you appreciate our blog!
We agree that Seaworld's live shows and captivity of large marine creatures should have ended a long time ago.Â
In other news, we see you have Irish blood! Our headquarters are based over here in Ireland :) Always nice to find alike people!
We hope that you will fight with us in order to make our dreams a reality.
All the best,
Everyone at Turn Tides

Amazing news!
An amendment has just passed in Congress which will push the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct an examination on the effects of captivity on marine animals such as ocras.
Could this be the beginning of the end for live orca and dolphin shows? We hope so!
