(ignore how shit from ass the hands look)
the trans girl’s name is abi de los reyes, and the trans boys name is river camilo lopez
abi is cuban, and river is dominican and puerto rican
both of them have powers, river’s being super speed, and abi’s being the ability to change her center of gravity, thus making her able to fly
they both live in a crummy antique fixer upper town called willow tree brook that’s hours outside of new york city
abi’s story is that while her mom was pregnant with her, her (the mom) and her dad decided to keep the gender of the baby a surprise because they didn’t care that much. however, her dad had a gut feeling she would be a boy, but “it could be anything and i wouldn’t mind”. he didn’t want her to be a boy, that’s just what he thought would happen. but then, on the way to the hospital, it was raining and they’d ended up swerving on the road on the way to the hospital. this ended up killing abi’s dad, as the car slammed into a tree. abi’s mom was able to call 911 and she got to the hospital, where abi was born that same night. abi grew up, and from a fairly young age she told people she was a girl. her family supported her no matter what, either because they genuinely believed her, or because they felt pity and thought she’d grow out of it. but she never did and soon started to transition physically. however, as she went through this, she started to think about what it would be like with her real dad here. her mom had remarried soon after abi was born out of a pact that her, abi’s dad, and their childhood friend made together; if abi’s dad died, the friend would marry abi’s mom. they never thought they’d have to use this pact, but they did. and so that’s when abi went back to watch some videos of her mom and dad before he died, and she discovered the assumptions he had about her birth and her gender. seeing her own dad, the one she could no longer talk to, say he thought she’d be a boy, it made her feel guilty. as if she didn’t ask for permission first. she wanted to love her dad but he wasn’t there to love, and now she doesn’t know if he’d even love her back the same. she can’t come out to him herself, she can’t get his support, because there’s no longer a source for it to come from. so now, since the age of nine, she’ll wallow in her room for three days of the year; her birthday, and the day before and after that. she already gets dysphoria, most people do, but it’s like it all racks up for the month of august, because she took his place in existence. she inherently saves all her depression for that time of the year, and everything else doesn’t need to be addressed. she’s got a little sister, named el, and her best friend amelia, but neither of them know how to comfort her because her situation is so specific. el is technically the only happy one in the family, being the result of the aftermath of abi’s dad dying rather than a cause, and amelia has a hard time understanding others and doesn’t know how to think of problems that she can’t relate to her own, which are very different. so abi feels forever guilty she couldn’t at least handle living as a boy for her dad. that was the only expectation she knew he had for her and she couldn’t even do that. the biggest comfort she has that she’s doing something correctly is that it’s impossible to fall because her power affects her reflexes and literally catches her if she topples. so she’s never fallen over in her life except for once, which we’ll get to later.
river’s story is that his mom and dad were in a bit of a situationship. they weren’t married, river’s mom was kinda young, and his dad was an on and off alcoholic who was very temperamental. when river was born, his mom ended up paralyzed from the waist down after giving birth. this pissed river’s dad off because now she “couldn’t do anything for him”. this resulted in a lot of abuse to river’s mom in every aspect of the word. meanwhile, river watched all of it happen because, while he could technically run away, he didn’t think it would actually help anything and he didn’t want to leave without his mom. after a while, even river would try and argue back to his dad from time to time, but it would end up falling apart because he never had any true rebuttals and his dad would sometimes just smack him away. finally, after a while, while river was still young, a relative was able to get river and his mom out of the situation. but river and his mom never really got over the situation. his mom can’t go places very well because where they live isn’t very accommodating to wheelchairs, so she just works from home and goes to simple places like the park, while river ends up doing this like going to the grocery store and whatnot. because of how he grew up, river didn’t really come out or even think much about who he was till he was probably eleven or twelve. currently, he can’t get on things like hormone blockers or anything, so the most he does to pass is basic things like cutting his hair, voice training, wearing binders, etc. his dad tries to come around from time to time to threaten him and his mom, too, but he leaves pretty quickly when he realizes he doesn’t care enough. everytime his dad comes around though, he (his dad) always says something weird about him. like “you look less like my ‘daughter’ every day” or “i thought you were a girl. don’t know if this is a blessing or a curse.” weird derogatory things that really point out how his dad both hated women and queer people all in one. river can’t win here because if he actually was a girl, his dad would hate him for that. but if he actually points out the fact he’s been a boy, his dad would hate him more than he already does over that as well. another thing that happened to river when he was fifteen was that he ended up having a crush on this girl named iris who was in a couple of his classes. iris had her own problems and was known around the school as being a fake and a crashout. her power is super strength and she’s never been afraid to use it on people when she’s upset. acceptance is a big deal to her because she lacks it from her mom and sister simply because shes got genuine temper issues and they don’t want to help her with them. so when iris finds out about river, a trans boy who’s clearly got his own crap going on,liking her, the pretty girl who was held back, she decides to take it to her advantage. she says yes to being his girlfriend only to talk about how she’s so accepting and learning so much about queer people because she’s dating a “trans girl”. she doesn’t actually care to learn any terminology, or to learn about river at all. however, since river has such a skewed view of relationships, he didn’t break up with her till they physically had a fight at a school dance accident in an empty classroom, and one of iris’ nails cut river’s shoulder really deeply because of her super strength.
abi and river meet about a year after that incident and abi, being very open to meeting new people, starts to get closer to river out of curiosity. he reciprocates this interest, though very warily, considering what happened just a year prior. that is until he learns about abi’s mourning on her birthday. he went to visit her to simply see if she was busy only to find out she was sitting in her room half way sobbing, barely talking, with amelia by her side having no idea what to do. abi gets pretty embarrassed by this, but river still tries to see if he can help. he tells amelia that maybe she should stop trying to tell her it’s okay and instead just let her talk when she wants and needs to. and it makes a lot of difference to abi because everyone who knew about her situation was either equally as manic as her or couldn’t understand the nuance behind it. river didn’t even get a chance to figure out what was wrong, he just knew that no one should keep saying stop crying while it’s uncontrollable. he knows firsthand it’s unavoidable. after a couple hours of just trying to soothe abi, she ends up making a comment about herself in relation to her dad, which gives river a chance to let her explain. she does, and he stays with her and amelia the rest of the day to keep her company. a few weeks later, school starts again and iris sees abi and river hanging out a lot more. she starts to get really confused and annoyed by this, not realizing it’s actually stemming from her guilt over what she did to river. this resulted in her beginning to target abi, making crude remarks about her, pointing out her (abi’s) own transness in relation to river’s, and just over all trying to bully them into being apart. it didn’t work, of course, but rather confused abi. she asked river what was up and that’s when he showed abi the scar he got from his fight with iris and explained the story behind it. this in turn pissed abi off to no end. she decided that the next time iris pulled something, she’d just fight her. there didn’t seem to be much else left to do to get her off their backs. that day ended up being pretty soon, because iris actually told abi herself to meet her in an empty classroom during club times after school. originally, abi wasn’t gonna do it, but iris quite literally forced her and river to come along. she started throwing punches at abi, and river growing up the way he did, felt frozen in his spot and didn’t know how to stop it. meanwhile, abi flew around trying to dodge iris till she got tired. that is until iris shook a bookshelf and caught abi off guard so much she fell from the ceiling to the floor. and abi was terrified. that feeling was brand new to her, and even though iris stopped punching because she realized she fucked up again, abi still felt overwhelmed and couldn’t get rid of the sinking feeling in her stomach. she felt like she was wrong all over again, and river still couldn’t move even though he’s supposed to be the quickest kid around. abi was a bookworm, she was always caught up in her own little world of papers of assumptions, and her wings had just been torn apart. no one had any idea what to do, till iris decided that she should at least try to fix it a little bit and pick them up and out of the classroom. she tossed them out and then locked the door behind her, and she stayed there for the night as her own punishment. abi and river finally got to their senses outside of the classroom and abi just started sobbing. river held himself together just enough to supper abi on his side and walk them both home. they explained to their parents what had happened and they let them both stay home from school for a week after that while the adults dealt with the situation themselves. during that week, since all the others were in school, river and abi just ended up hanging out and both developing crushes on each other on account of what they did for each other and their experiences that helped them do it. as of right now in the story, they aren’t together yet but they do end up together when they’re older and make music !!
