Cousin in town visiting and finally spilling all the tea about how bad things are with my mom. It is so much worse than I thought.
Sheâs living with her sister who constantly berates my mom for not spending enough time with her. Like if my mom is out too late, sheâll berate her. If my mom goes downstairs to talk with my cousin, she is only âallowedâ to be down there for half an hour or my aunt will start texting her to come up. My aunt is likely in the early stages of dementia but is making my momâs life a living hell.
My mom wants to kick her out but canât because she needs my auntâs rent money; my momâs money is entirely going to my sister who lives in England, without a job (somehow - I donât understand how this is possible). My sister is rude and nasty to my mother when they talk despite my mom constantly sending her money (which I can see on Venmo).
My aunt doesnât shower. She stinks to high heaven. My mom has similarly stopped taking care of herself. She showers maybe once a week and also smells bad.
My mom wants to move in with her other sister, but that sister does not want the cats to live in her house. The cats that my sister adopted and then dumped on my mom to go live her exciting life abroad, which consists of bed rotting in a rented room and taking trips to the continent with my momâs money. My mom doesnât take particularly good care of the cats; sheâs never been a cat person, and now theyâre part of whatâs preventing her from getting herself out of what sounds like an awful situation.
I obviously have to act here. Or I feel like I do. But my mom is lucid; I canât just get a power of attorney and clean all of this up. But for fuckâs sake, this is intolerable. At the very least I want to take the cats and kick my aunt out of the house. But my mom stubbornly insists to me that everything is fine. God this is so fucked up.
âWhat if you burned it all down and started overâŚand then pretended that you hadnât? What if you insisted on locating your ideals and your identity in the old order that you had already rejectedâthat, in fact, you had overthrown and destroyed by force? That should seem deeply odd. Yet this is what we do with the most fundamental question of American identity. We tell ourselves a story that links us to a past political regime âFounding America, the America of the Declaration of Independence and the Founderâs Constitutionâto which we are not the heirs. We are more properly the heirs of the people who destroyed that regime.â
-Kermit Roosevelt III, The Nation that Never Was.
Iâm back on my Kermit 2nd Founding bullshit and I will never stop being tickled with how heâs able to take the argument of every left wing social studies teacher and of William Lloyd Garrison to its best and most logical conclusion: the Declaration and the âfounders constitutionâ suck shit but hooray hooray we are the heirs of the people who killed it with bullets on a hot day in Pennsylvania.
The Catholic church is a thin veneer of aesthetics and religious dogma laid over the Western world's most ancient continuously operating bureaucracy. The issuing of an official Vatican-approved I'm Sorry form that SSPX members have to fill out and tick several checkboxes then get stamped for approval to have their excommunications reversed is more beautiful to me than any liturgy
Itâs been an interesting few weeks for counterexamples. This post is basically my perspective of what has been going on in the world of form
Even though Terry Tao has been saying for months that "AI in mathematics is the real deal", it was a little slow to percolate. But now that Fable and Sol are out, several big AI results were delivered on back-to-back days and it seems like math is about to have its own Claude Code moment where the whole field collectively realizes over a period of days that the game has changed. My condolences to them, it's kind of traumatizing but hopefully you come out the other side intact. Some people do, I'm still not sure if I'm one of them.

We have this weird little cubby in the stairs to our basement that sometimes we put little decorative knick knacks in but otherwise serves no purpose. But today our petite lil kitty decided itâs her new spot đĽš

My least favorite phrase is âjust make assumptionsâ which is leadershipâs way of saying âeven though you donât have enough information, find the right answer any wayâ
On two occasions I have been asked, â âPray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?â In one case a member of the Upper, and in the other a member of the Lower, House put this question. I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.
You have to love how both
people asking stupid questions about computers, and
computer scientists responding by being total dickwadsÂ
are phenomena that go all the way back to the very beginning of the discipline.

Saw something about how despite not being well suited for air conditioners, European windows are superior to American windows and sorry but no, because they also donât have screens. So in summer when you most need to open windows to get a draft in, youâre also letting in hordes of mosquitoes. Yes there are screen curtains you can put up but thatâs a whole extra install and not as effective as built in screens. The ability to open windows vertically is nice, I guess, but since coming home Iâve never once wished I could do that but Iâve been extremely grateful for the screens.
