mandatory report to the watchful eye
i absolutely fuckin hate it here
This is why you gotta show love and comment on old fics. You never know when the author may drop another chapter
"middle aged women shouldn't participate in fandom" and you think it's teenagers that are writing those brilliant, incisive 100k fics of your favourite characters
Louder.
I keep seeing fic with words censored in the body of the fic like so: c*nt, f*gg*t, q-slur (seriously, come on), r*pe, *nc*st. I even saw a fic where someone was described as "sitting next to his unalived body" which was so absurd it made me laugh.
I've seen this trend in tags as well, which would be ACTIVELY FUCKING DANGEROUS if AO3 tag wranglers weren't literal, actual angels who make sure that "rape" and "r*pe" (and all such transpositions) are treated like the same tag.
AO3 isn't TikTok. Tag accurately and completely for your fic themes so people can search AND filter. Use the correct words in your fic content so people who use blacklist extensions can actually benefit from the tools that protect them.
If you don't feel comfortable using a word without censoring it, then don't use that word at all. Maybe consider why you're even writing something that contains that theme.
Sincerely,
An actual real life rape and incest survivor who has actual fucking PTSD and really doesn't want to have to stop reading fic for my ship because people think a god damn asterisk is going to somehow save people like me from being triggered.

You know what I donât get? When fanfic authors apologize for long chapters. Itâs like? You gave me bonus content, for free, and youâre sorry about it? Bruh. I have already named my firstborn after you. Dude.
You know what else I donât get? When they apologize for short updates. Itâs like: look at these new words I gave you! Sorry I didnât give you even more free words. Bro, thatâs at least two words that I did not have yesterday. For free. Dude. Thank you.
And another thing: when people drop out of nowhere with a surprise update and then apologize for it taking a while. Like, dude, I wasnât expecting anything, and you gave me words. I thought this fic was abandoned, but wait: thereâs more. You just popped in and reminded me that this is a Good Fic that I should probably reread. You made my goshdarn day.
Basically fanfic writers are under no obligation to publish anything so when they do update itâs always a net positive because the story is longer now, and I have something to read, so thank you so much to everyone who writes fic at whatever pace or quantity they want.
You know. Reading is important. Because I'm like always trying to make every line I write this groundbreaking mindfucking art but like. A book is 90% just saying what happened. "I hugged him around the waist." "The chair was brown and overstuffed." "I woke up alone." Etc etc. Like normal ass lines. I just keep comparing my boring, necessary to set a scene lines, with famous authors' absolute best lines and like.... every line doesn't have to shatter the earth. Sometimes someone just sits in a chair and the lines that wreck you come later, one at a time, here and there. It's alright.
This is super common and I wish we were taught when we begin to write that those quoted lines are also in a sea of the same sort of setup we obsess over not being 'good enough'. I saw multiple people drop out of writing courses over this in college. Sure, sometimes you need a better way to describe something prevalent or to pinpoint an emotion, but if EVERYTHING was written in that sort of tone for a whole book it would prove utterly exhausting to read.
Also, if every single line in the book was hard-hitting and mindblowing, then it wouldn't be memorable because it would be drowned out.
The best lines are famous because they stand out.
I think I might have a new horrible, terrible, fucking amazing story idea.
Okie dokie it took a very disturbing turn very quickly but here's the idea;
Imagine the tiniest, most wimpy, pathetic, pitiful dragon you possibly can. She's got blunt horns and blunt teeth, and her claws aren't very sharp! She's a little smaller than your average house cat! Her name is Altheria. Her hoard consists of;
One dirty gold coin
That's it.
And she's so little she can't even hold the coin in one paw. It's not a big coin, she's just little and doesn't have thumbs! đ
So the other dragons are all bigger and greedy, and very mean to her. She's struggling to hold onto her one pathetic coin, and these other dragons are fucking HUGE with caves full of gold, yet they're super greedy and want all the gold they can get! So one of them sees Altheria's single little coin and steals it. She tries to fight back, but they're so big compared to her that they just bat her out of the sky like hitting a fly with fly swatter.
So she's lost her entire hoard in one night, and she's feeling pretty pathetic, when she sees a poster!
HELP WANTED - RESCUE PRINCESS ELIZABETH - REWARD 15,000 GOLD
and she gets a very bad idea, but she's pretty desperate and stupid so she does it anyway!
So the story follows Altheria as she blunders her way through this quest to save the kidnapped princess (so tragically taken days before her wedding!!!) And she kinda sucks at it. She mostly skates by because everyone looks at her and goes "She's so small!!! She's harmless!!!"
And there's this thing called The Gift that people are born with. Only people with The Gift can understand dragons, so no one knows what the fuck she's saying anyway. Everyone just ignores her!
Well Altheria makes it to the bandit infested fortress where the princess is only to discover....
Drum roll please!!!!
The princess wasn't kidnapped. She ran the fuck away because she was not vibing with that whole marriage thing. She's taken over this small army of bandits and become their leader. She's plotting to take over her father's kingdom and become queen instead of being sold off to some prince. She's building an army.
Elizabeth has offered every would-be rescuer to show up a choice; join her cause, or die. Out of 37 would be rescuers, only three have joined her. The other 34 she defeated and killed in single combat. Because she's a badass.
She then ransomed the bodies to their families for a shit load of money.
So Eliza has The Gift, and gives Altheria the same choice but with some added sugar; if Altheria joins up, she can be Eliza's treasurer.
Altheria takes one look at the 35,000 gold Eliza has built up, and Eliza promises they'll get even more gold if they can take over the kingdom... And Altheria is 100% on board!!!!
But the reason dragons need gold is simple; the more gold a dragon possess, the larger they grow. That's why Altheria was so small. She only had one coin! But now she has 35,000 that she (kinda, she shares with Eliza) owns.
Altheria starts growing again. Throughout their quest to take back the kingdom in Eliza's name, she gets bigger, her teeth and horns get sharper, her fire gets hotter... She becomes a fucking badass, just like Eliza.
That's as far as I've gotten so far.
This story is badass. hehe~ Imagine Eliza and Altheria going around defeating the other dragons that bullied Altheria before (in the sense of robbing; unless dragons do âfair and squareâ matches to get the Gold) and Altheria just becomes this extra huge, extra strong, extra badass dragon and the rest are now the tiny fly treatment dragons. XD hahaha
I have this image in my head of Altheria eating the alley cat that was mean to her in chapter one, but this works too
OP can I đ ąď¸lease draw fanart
I would die for you if you did
Bless
And you know I had to draw my favorite part
I'm actually crying oh my god I can't see the screen anymore my eyes are too blurry with tears in my god oh my god oh my god do you understand you're my favorite person now? Holy shit holy shit holy shit I love you she looks so little and perfect it's exactly how I pictured it thank you THANK YOU THANK YOU⤠⤠â¤
I hope you know I've been sitting here in hysterics repeating SHE'S GOT A LITTLE FORK SWORD SHE'S GOT A LITTLE FORK SWORD SHE'S GOT A LITTLE FORK SWORD OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS SO MUCH OH MY GOD
with one amendment: could she possibly eat the dog who was mean to her in chapter 1?
How about a raccoon instead?
Raccoons are mean and associated with no gender, I concur.
Iâm just ... u know, imagining this ... very nice, old black lady voice for the âis there a problem, Elizabethâ but ALSO imagining a princess voice. AGH
I picture Elizabeth's voice as very prim, proper, and delicate. Like cheery and upbeat no matter what she's talking out. Think like if Janet from The Good Place was a princess.
Yo, can Altheria get her dirty, small coin back? Like a keepsake for something?
Shhhhh spoilers. I've actually got a full plot now, I'm getting into the first draft as we speak.
This story has so many powerful economic privilege themes:
Most known dragons have grown up big and strong because they were supplied with starter hoards from their parents.
Altheria is an example of a rags to riches story that follows a narrative that few lower class dragons get to experience.
Fascinating.
I like you. You get it.
Does the story have a title
Yes! "The Dragon Altheria." Everything about it will be tagged as such.
You work as tech support for ancient supernatural beings who are trying to adapt to the modern world. Itâs a frustrating - and at times dangerous - job, but at least your clients pay well.
Part Two || Part Three || Part Four
âMy Great Destroyer, Consumer of Lands, Harbinger of the Deep Seas,â you say trying to keep the exasperation from your voice, âyou need to be connected to the internet to see your email.â
â{}@&_@&%(#(&@__!*_â
âYes. Can you move the mouse to the lower right side of the screen? There should be some little bars that will tell you if you are connected to the wi-fi.â
â&%)!^*^$%^!_%_$}{|â
âNo my Great and Terrible the wi-fi is not a rival god from the desert lands, itâs just the technology that letâs you see your email.â
â!*&){}|@*#â
âGood, that means you are connected to the internet. Now if you can open your browser, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or even Microsoft Edge.â
â!@^&)(&@!&&&@}|â
You mute yourself so you can swear. âYes, you can use Internet Explorer to access your AOL email account. If I may offer a suggestion?â
â$%^&*@â
âIt will be easier in the long run, I promise. But Microsoft stopped supporting Internet Explorer a long time ago, and AOL is barely a company anymore. If you will let me walk you through some steps we can get you a modern web browser and a brand new email-â
â&^$}â
âYes, with all of your old email.â
â-
Five hours of your life later, youâve got the deep sea eldritch god set up with Firefox and a new email with forwarding from itâs old email. Just when you start to think that this job isnât remotely worth it, a small crab-like creature crawls across your desk. (you canât in good conscious call it a crab because it somehow has both too many eyes, legs, and pincers, and not enough of the same. yet your brain interprets the being as âcrabâ)
Itâs about the size of a coffee mug and it holds something up for you, shaking one of itâs many claws at you.
You take the small thing, and crab scuttles away to where ever it came from.
The small thing in your palm seems to be a tiny treasure chest, the kind of thing that youâd put in a goldfish bowl. It feels wet and the kind of slimy something gets from being covered in seaweed.
You put it down on your desk just in time for it to rapidly expand, cracking a support on your desk and covering you in sea water.
Before you can get mad about it the chest opens revealing a small horde of gold, jewels, and a bottle of what you have to assume is pirate rum.
âOh! Cool!â one of your coworkers say as they pop their head up over the cubicle wall. âI wish I got pirate booty once in a while.â
âWhy, what did Thyrien, Emissary of the Sun, give you for helping them recover their steam library?â you ask.
âA sense of peace and calm about my life and place in the world.â
âOh sounds nice.â
âIt is. They also gave me this ceremonial headdress.â You coworker disappears for a moment and puts on a giant headdress that appears to be made from gold and platinum and has several truly giant diamonds all over it.
âWow,â you say.
âYeah, Iâm thinking I should wear this to the next company mixer.â
[a very nice anon asked for more and then sent pictures of cute animal fluff balls so who am I to deny them]
While watching a DVD from the library my TV popped up a message saying to press a button if I wanted to watch this from additional providers.
It's never done that before so I looked it up and turns out Roku TVs have added all sorts of creepy things in the privacy section since I last checked.
One of which being they take screenshots from what you're watching and send them to third parties to identify it.
Fucking hell! Remember when every fucking device in your life wasn't a spy implanted in your home and working against your interests to try and sell your data? Remember how nice that was??
Remember when the TV was just a tool that would play the things you plugged into it?
Why must the future suck SO much?
TVs collect a huge amount of data. Here's how to use privacy settings to limit the surveillance on TVs from LG, Samsung, TCL, and every othe
A good rundown on what each brand of TV is up to and which settings you should turn off.

i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story
sometimes things are subtext because they donât quite fit the tone of the story, or because the story isnât about that (and if they showed it outright they would have to take time to explore it), or sometimes the characters arenât ready to face it, or sometimes subtext is just the right choice for this specific story, or SOMETIMES itâs just fun and interesting to have underlying themes and implications!!!!
also just because itâs subtext doesnât mean itâs not deliberate or not meant to be part of the story. âwell if they WANTED it to be canon they shouldâve SAID SOâ some of us can understand implications. some of us enjoy thinking about the media we consume and donât just want everything handed to us on a silver platter. âwow i canât believe the writers didnât even realize what this impliesâ im going to beat you to death with hammers
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better
I reblogged this like 9 times kinda jokingly, but software should be able to run on older and less powerful hardware, and consume less power on newer hardware. Like, this is a real problem imo
I completely agree with this but I do need you to understand that the image above is 32 times the size of the lunar missionâs memory
This is what the image looked like compressed to 4 kb
that was a very expensive superbowl ad
Do not for one fucking minute believe this will meaningfully stop your stupid fucking internet camera from being used by law enforcement or adtech data companies. This is one partnership being (allegedly) cancelled for now.
Get rid of your stupid fucking internet camera.
Yeah, this is a win in that it is a big FUCK YOU to ring and flock, and a sign to others that profiting of collaboration with a fascist regime is not popular with 'consumers'. But it doesn't mean ring cameras aren't still dangerous to you and your community. Get rid of them.
Unhealthy ships in a fandom are a bioindicator. They're like finding caterpillars on your produce. You may not want to consume them---you may even find them disgusting---but if they aren't there at all, you know that stuff is COVERED in toxicity.
There are some people in the reblogs saying "too many caterpillars are unhealthy too though!" but they are WRONG. You can always remove a caterpillar but you can't wash off pesticide
#this is a metaphor for 'you can dldr as many fics as you want but you can't avoid people who come to you to make you feel bad'

Youâre telling me this was made during the Hays Code
This is whatâs known as a physique film, and it is vintage gay porn. Actual gay pornography was illegal in the 50s, so people created short films like these that existed in a legal gray area - the (paper thin) excuse is that they are about bodybuilding and fitness. No sex happens in physique films, nor any full-frontal nudity, just a lot of the kind of thing you can see in these gifs. The film reels would be ordered by people through the mail (via physique magazines - which were magazines of homoerotic photography along the same lines as these films) and would not have been screened in theatres. Since they were not a product of the movie studio system, physique films were not subject to the Hays Code, but that did not mean they werenât extremely legally dubious. Physique films and magazines were dangerous to make, distribute, and consume because of obscenity laws, and most of the important figures in the industry were arrested at least once.
