I run a punk/indie karaoke show called Karaoke Underground, and I’m headed out to the West Coast in December so Eric thought I should post some tunes from the KU songlist. These seven songs have all been called “the greatest karaoke song ever” by me at some point. I use “we” a lot because my wife Hannah founded Karaoke Underground with me and it was always a joint show for the first four years or so, until we had kids.
Enon - Conjugate The Verbs: This was one we used to sing with friends up in Minneapolis with Ian Rans’ Punk Karaoke show, and such was our collective love for it that one of our good buddies made the transition from painfully bad warbler to confident and competent singer just so he could sing this one song. It was an amazing and inspiring journey, cheers Banya!
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust: More revved-up than the slightly clunky Bowie original, this is the kind of cover that sounds the way the original should, at least how I remember it.
Patti Smith - Gloria: Another cover, this time taken on a trip far beyond where Van Morrison and Them started. The frat-rock classic becomes an anthem of female sexual power, powerfully rejecting the patriarchal idea of original sin. And you better dance and sing along to this one.
The Mountain Goats - This Year: A song that’s relevant every day and every night, I think it captures the kind of resilient spirit Bruce Springsteen is associated with. “I am gonna make it through this year, if it kills me.” KU was lucky enough to have John Darnielle join a fan on our stage for a performance of this last year for one very magical moment.
McLusky - To Hell With Good Intentions: A call-and-response favorite, each line punctuated with a singalong shout of “sing it!” This is just a series of fairly nonsensical playground boasts, but it’s so convincing when a room full of people has got your back.
Le Tigre - Deceptacon: A little more nonsense, some politics and a whole lot of new wave-inspired electronic punk, this is the most reliable dance party-starter on our list.
Modest Mouse - Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine: The leadoff song from the album my college friends referred to as “The Bible,” there’s a lot to take from these lyrics. But the reason it’s on this list is that Hannah made an incredible video for it that I never get tired of showing. The pathos of phrases like “do you need a lot of what you got to survive?” is highlighted by the writing on skin and spelling out “give a shit” on eggshells makes a darker moment kind of funny.
