Thinking about Tron & The Matrix:
Take a look around, what do you notice? Majority of people are either on a phone or laptop, utilizing a form of technology. Advancements in technology were created by people who wanted to create a new system for us to use. An example of this is with Alan Turing. He created the idea that we could have a computer program to solve any problem that we encounter with just the click of a button. Without these advancements of technology, our society would be lost, and life would be very different.
In the film Tron (1982), the Master Computer Program (MCP) was created by Walter Gibbs, as a program to rule the world inside of the mainframe computer. In time, gamer Kevin Flynn ended up transporting into the digital world that he programmed and was faced against the MCP. The MCP is one of the most effective, powerful systems ever created and it has learned to grow beyond its confines of the original program. Over time, the MCP wanted more power and was stealing data and the functions from other systems and companies. The intelligence was beginning to grow out of control, and it desired complete dominance in the world. To me, this form of dominance felt like the MCP was trying to be just as smart as a human (or maybe even smarter), but it wasn’t. What if the MCP took over our lives? We would have computers providing us with ideas, along with allowing/denying our access to certain sites in a computer. As a result, the MCP represents a closed system as it needs to control & regulate everything. An example of this was when Flynn was trying to gain access to all the information inside the computer, but the company was denying his access and monitoring his behavior, similar to what AT&T was doing. AT&T wanted to be in full control and only create phones for their service. I feel that this dominance is beginning to limit our humanity.
The MCP is associated with the rise of the personal computer, as computers were beginning to become prevalent during this time period. Computers are beginning to get smarter since the time they were written as a result of the people programming and controlling them (MCP). While watching Tron, I thought about the idea of computers being the master programs of our thoughts and our lives. It’s almost as if our humanity will soon be taken by computers. Gibbs explained, “You can remove men like Alan and me from the system. but we have helped create it! And our spirit remains in every program we design for this computer.” This quote explains how even if the men are removed, they will always be the masterminds behind the genius idea of creating the MCP & their humanity remains in it. As a result of the computer graphics and lights in the movie, the true battle for free and open software was demonstrated. The users are fighting the “big program” for freedom because they want to be in full control, which may begin to limit our creativity. In my opinion, if creativity is limited, then how can we express ourselves and our new ideas? How can we improve our society?
The whole concept of the MCP is also seen in the film, The Matrix. The man is considered the Matrix, as he shared the virtual world by keeping a close eye on it. If the MCP has no users, then it would be unable to function. Content and data would not be added; therefore, humans are needed to create more before the machines destroy and limit it. Similar to Tron, this system is closed because it’s the main “machine” that is in charge and controlling. I found it interesting how in both films, the main character was faced against the MCP, almost as if it was human vs. technology.
Our society would not be where we are today without the invention of the MCP. The way that our society is transforming is a direct result of the MCP. Our everyday lives feel like we are living in a giant computer program, everyone trying to edit it (hack) and create new ideas. Think about it…. What if the MCP took over the world wide web and the existing infrastructure? We would be having that small piece of technology which we all use everyday, thinking for us and controlling us. What would the future of our society do? Would we even be human?
