What Can You Expect In Life

It was when I receive my acceptance letter to my master’s program.  It was in November a couple weeks after I turned in my application.  I was nervous and knew I had to wait a couple of weeks before I heard back.  

I was laying in my bed just scrolling through my phone.  I ended up looking at my email and saw that there was a change in my application status.  I knew the decision had come in.  

I logged into the portal and took a deep breath before I looked at the new message.  My heart was beating loudly and had picked up its pace.  My breathing became erratic.  I opened the message and saw the date along with my name and address.  “Congratulations and welcome...”

My heart stopped.  I never realized how much I believed I did not deserve being accepted until that moment.  I ran downstairs to tell my dad, my biggest supporter.  

He was out in the garage doing some project.  His back was turned to me as I walked into the room.  “I got in,” I just stated in disbelief.  I saw my dad freeze.  Then he turned around and said excitedly, “congratulations!” 

He came over and gave me a hug and that was when I began to feel.  The floodgates opened and I felt an overwhelming emotion of joy, relief, and awe.  I could not control my emotions as I began to cry hugging my dad.  

I felt all the support and faith he had in me in that hug.  I admired him wholeheartedly for motivating me and believing in me when I did not believe in myself.  

That was 2 years ago.  I am currently in my last year of my master’s program studying counseling psychology getting ready to graduate in June, while I am applying for a Ph.D. program to further my career in something I love.  

This moment is ingrained into my brain.  A memory I could never forget.
