Englandâs Pearl and Their Beloved Queen
Mary I and Katherine of Aragon by @francy-sketches
Does anyone else feel such a level of guilt when they take a break from their school work that they have to make their hobby somehow related to whatever they need to revise with the result being illustrations based around historical figures or is this a fairly niche problem?
I had fun with the historical fashion, but will not claim it to be 100% accurate, I am but a mere mortal
@dailytudors TUDOR WEEK 2024 : Day 3 - Wednesday, 16th of October:Â Best Tudor What If?
What if Mary I of England have given birth to a son âĻ
On May 9, 1555, in the early hours of the morning, Mary I of England gave birth to a son after a protracted and arduous night of labor. Named Henry in honor of his grandfather, the formidable Henry VIII, this child marked a pivotal moment in European history.
Overwhelmed with relief and joy, Mary felt a profound sense of fulfillment in achieving her long-desired aspiration for a legitimate Catholic heir. His birth not only represented a personal triumph but also symbolized the strengthening of the dynastic alliance between England and Spain through his father,Philip of Spain . This event generated considerable political implications, as it reinforced Philipâs influence over English affairs and signaled a potential stabilization of Catholic power in England amid the turbulent landscape of the Reformation. The arrival of Prince Henry, therefore, held the promise of a more unified Catholic monarchy, altering the trajectory of religious and political conflicts in Europe for decades to come.

âBlessed Catherine of Aragon & Princess Mary Tudor (later Mary I of England )â
I wanted to honor the memory of Queen Catherine of Aragon & Princess Mary Tudor. I created a little piece of art inspired by one of the pieces of the Litany of Loreto, which is a series of needlework depicting Virgin Mary. Link to original needlework : https://royal-needlework.org.uk/litany-of-loreto/
A little celebratory painting in honor of Anne of Cleves' Hans Holbein portrait being cleaned
People often were not completely static sitters for their artists. They were also often played music, read to, and spoken with to help pass the time. Anne of Cleves, like many women of the era, was a fine sewist, but she may have also whiled the hours away practicing English for her prospective new husband or being taught court etiquette.
William Kay Blacklock's "The Lesson" was somewhat referenced for proper hand anatomy, as the main reference for this was the Hans Holbein portrait itself. Blacklock actually had two very similar paintings, which would have been even more useful to me had I discovered it earlier. The Second is "The Window."
Edit: Better photo
Catherine Parr
Queen of England, Sixth wife of Henry VIII
Art by 9 muses and an old mind (tumblr 1, tumblr 2)
After his disastrous marriage to Catherine Howard, Henry VIII resolved to marry a more mature woman. He found his next wife among the maids of honor to his daughter Mary. In her thirties and twice widowed, Catherine Parr fit the bill perfectly.  She was sensible, stylish, and intellectual.  She also favored religious reform over the traditions of Catholicism. Her father had been a close friend of Henryâs and Catherine herself may have been named in honor of Henryâs first wife Catherine of Aragon.
After two arranged marriages, Catherine hoped her third marriage would be for love and she had formed an attachment to Thomas Seymour, brother of the late Jane Seymour. But no one could refuse the king. Henry and Catherine married on July 12, 1543.
Catherine soon became one of Henryâs most trusted advisers. She was a devoted stepmother and personally oversaw the education of his two minor children, Elizabeth and Edward. She also influenced Henry to return Mary and Elizabeth to the line of succession. Henry trusted Catherine so much that he appointed her regent for several months in 1544 while he went on a military campaign to France.
Despite this show of trust, Catherine was not entirely safe from Henryâs wrath. Catherine was devoutly Protestant and published two theological works. In 1546, her strong religious view nearly led to her death when she was accused of having banned religious books in her rooms. A warrant was drawn up for her arrest but before it could be executed, a copy was anonymously left for Catherine. Aware that her life was in jeopardy, Catherine rushed to Henry who chastised her for being so outspoken on religious matters. Catherine told him she only brought up such issues so that he could educate her. Henry quickly forgave Catherine and rewarded her with new jewelry.Â
Henry VIII died in 1547. Six months later, Catherine married Thomas Seymour. Although her hasty marriage was somewhat scandalous, Catherine remained the guardian of Princess Elizabeth and her cousin Lady Jane Grey. Childless after three marriages, Catherine became pregnant at age 35. On August 30, 1548, Catherine gave birth to a daughter she named Mary. Six days later Catherine died from postpartum infection.Â
Thomas Seymour was beheaded for treason on March 20, 1549. Baby Mary went to live with a close friend of Catherineâs, but apparently died as a small child as there are no records of her life past age two.
I was in the mood to draw an actual person and out of all the official/most famous paintings of Henry VIII's wives, I like Anne of Cleves' portrait the best, so I decided to draw that. This was a lot of fun! 20 min doodle, pen on plain white paper.
