I'd love to hear your HCs regarding Spy and Engie's relationship... Like, what do they bond over? Do they interact often? Will Spy stop sapping Engie long enough for them to have an actual conversation?
You've made me just love their dynamic and now I can't stop thinking of them.
cracks my knuckles. OKAY! I'm not sure if you mean romantic or as friends, but I'm gonna go with romantic because thats most of what I think about for them.
My first ever introduction to how cute I think their dynamic is was fanart, to be honest. They're very popular so I'm not surprised but I saw a lot of fanart when I was getting into the fandom and they latched onto me like bugs.
I think they bond over being so different. Engineer says whatever he thinks in the moment, or he talks to himself and such. Spy doesn't do that, he thinks before he talks and he doesn't talk to himself because talking is a death sentence in his line of work. Engie is really honest in my mind, if he thinks you're being annoying he'll tell you. Sure, he'll probably be nicer about it, but he's gonna tell you. And Spy would hate that at first I think. He doesn't like being called out because everytime Engineer points out that he's seen Spy slinking around base at 3am or how Spy never seems to wear anything else or that he's honestly quite rude to everyone around him. I think Spy warms up to it eventually because he feels like he doesn't have to hide around Engineer. Engineer is clearly going to keep saying when he notices something Spy does, noticing things is basically Engineers entire job. He notices when machines malfunction, he notices when something happens to one of his buildings, he notices when he hears breathing behind him. There's not a point in trying to appear so uptight all the time around Engineer, because Engineer sees directly through it.
I think Spy would believe Engineer is sane at first. Not entirely, Engineer is never going to appear perfectly in his right mind, but saner than most other mercenaries. Then Engineer says something like " I sawed off my right hand to do this, " or he starts talking about what he does when he hangs out with Medic (insane science bullshit) and Spy speedruns the stages of grief as he realizes he still wants to be friends with the funny Texan.
I also think Spy is a bit of a shit-talker and Engineer really depends. They could both go on about the other team for hours (Engineer is mostly complaining about the enemy spy, or the enemy soldier) but I don't think Engineer would shittalk his own team. Spy tests the waters about different teammates by bringing up something small like how he thinks Sniper needs better hygiene or how Pyro is so blatantly insane. Engineer reacts negatively to just about all of this and gets a bit angry when Spy tries to talk about Pyro or Medic or someone else Engineer is close with.
I think neither of them would really admit they have feelings for the other for a while. Engineer denies it and says he's too busy for a relationship, or that he and Spy are strictly professional, or that dating another mercenary is " simply out of the realm of possibility " . Spy scoffs at the idea and says he'd never date the filthy Texan who spends his time in a dusty workshop covered in oil or getting dirt on his knees out on the battlefield. This gets to Engineer a bit, and drives them apart further. But then it becomes too obvious that they both have the hots for eachother and the entire team is just waiting to catch them kissing behind a shed or something.
I think Spy is ever so slightly disturbed by Engineer. He knows Engineer won't attack him, or something, but Engineers willingness to subject himself to pain for science is concerning and Spy ever so slightly tries to dissuade Engineer from his next reckless plan, aswell as the pure joy he gets out of seeing his machines tear people to shreds is not something Spy finds exactly comforting.
As for their conversations, I think Spy can convince Engineer to stop doing insane bullshit long enough to have a conversation. They would probably struggle at first with not sharing their big interests, can't see Engineer being too into talking about. Whatever Spies hobbies are and I don't think Spy knows all too much about machines and self-imposed amputations but I think after a while they'd find things that could interest both of them. Engineer keeps trying to drive the conversation back to Spy helping him with some sort of self-destructive bullshit and Spy hard turning the talk back to like. Architecture. I dunno.
I'm pretty out of it right now, got some pain, but yeah this is some of the stuff I have for them. If you have any more specific questions I am so happy to answer they fill me with joy. I started liking them when I first got into TF2, stopped for a bit after a bad experience with another engiespy liker and now they hit me like a truck. Also I'm not proofreading this so if something I said makes no sense, sue me. Or something.
