And I know he looks that way not because of Kali, but because he'd seen Lucifer wear Sam's body, because Sam always says "yes" in Detroit.

Because in all other timelines, Sam gets corrupted by evil, and there's no way out for him. He's doomed to either get killed or get trapped inside of his body by none other than Lucifer himself.

And he CAN'T let that happen.

And this is why he hands Sam and Dean the answer – to prevent the Apocalypse from happening and to save Sam from suffering.

He tried to push them to accept their roles, but he can't anymore. And this is why he mainly talks to Dean in Hammer of the Gods. He feels guilty.
