it wasn't haley's intention, to have luke want to come to her rescue like that. it was never her intention to make the people she loved worry about her and her well-being, but she was human, too, and ever since nathan had his accident, she hadn't just lost her husband as she knew him — she'd lost her confidant, too, her partner in weathering any storm life threw their way. peyton and brooke were both off making their dreams come true a thousand miles away, and jamie was going through enough already as it was: she refused to be one of those moms who unfairly emotionally dump on their children, and so that left her with lucas. for better or worse, he was her constant now, her safe place, but he was nathan's brother, too. and he needed his support just as much as she did — maybe even more. ❛   he's on the couch drowning his sorrows in the nearest bourbon bottle, where else would he be?  ❜ tutor girl admits in defeat with a sigh, chocolate hues rising to meet luke's ocean blues at the detection of uncharacteristic rage in his tone. haley scoffs a sad chuckle as an attempt to defuse, ❛   c'mon, luke, what're you gonna do, break his legs? i know he's being an ass right now and you only say that because it kills you to see me and jamie hurting, but he's still your brother, and the last thing i want is to help build any more resentment between you two, i just — i don't know what else to do. i've tried taking him to the river court, i've tried getting him to spend some time with jamie playing out by the pool, god, i've even searched online for massages maybe i could do to help him get his movility back, nothing. there's days i don't see a light at the end of the tunnel, and i'm not gonna lie: it really, really scares me sometimes.   ❜

a compassionate glance took over former rock star's features, as it wasn't much of a stretch to relate to her best friend — the noble yet lonely desire to make things right with someone you'd wronged was a feeling she knew all too well after the whole touring scandal. nathan was barely acknowleding her existence since her return, a cold look over his shoulder when they crossed paths on the way to class being the most, if any, contact she'd be lucky to get from him. but that was where the nobility in the endeavor to redeem yourself lied, in not giving up. and thankfully, she had lucas to rely on when that persistence turned into tough and hurtful rejection — least she could do was return the favor. ❛  how do y'think your chances are looking with that one? y'know, on a scale from never-in-a-million-years to five-feet-rubs-away-from-victory?  ❜ haley inquires, keeping up with their trademark, lighthearted wit and banter, although she shouldn't have underestimated lucas' brooding ability to segue into the toughest of topics: her crumbling marriage. if you could even legally call it that, annulment papers considered and all. ❛  i thought of including him in, y'know, as some pathetic attempt to summon the gods of the universe and the power of tradition to work some magic on my life's greatest screw-up or something, but even the prediction of winning a grammy before turning 25 seemed more likely.  ❜ she hated to admit it out loud, how bad things were looking for a reconciliation with nathan, but if there was someone haley could let her guard down around without feeling like she was dangling fresh meat above a pool of angry piranhas, it was him. ❛  what am i gonna do if he doesn't forgive me, luke? how am i gonna live with myself knowing i single-handedly and for no good reason messed up the best thing that'll ever happen to me?  ❜

“That’s just because you’ve never celebrated it as a single lady in time square, ringing in the new year with a bunch of foreigners that love to pay for everything. But, somehow I don’t think that’s why you’re venting so...” Taylor put her two hands on top of her little sister’s. “What were you expecting to be different this year?” 

❛   how many times do i have to tell you i'm not single, taylor, we're just —  ❜ on the way to getting a divorce. TRY AND MAKE THAT SOUND BETTER THAN IT IS, FORMER SPELLING BEE CHAMPION. a frustrated sigh apart, haley huffs, ❛   taking some time to figure everything out. ❜ her weak attempt at optimism there was any solution to the mess she made when she left didn't console herself in one bit, but, strangely, the warmth radiating off her sister's hands onto her own skin did. guess spending an entire summer on a bus with nothing but applause from strangers and a narcissist to count for emotional support can leave you a little touch-starved. ❛   i'm sorry, i didn't mean to be a bitch, i just — i expected everything to be different, the good and the bad. i never in a million dreams would've thought i would get to listen to my song on the radio, or sing for sold-out crowds for three months in a row — but i also never thought always and forever would barely last six months, and that i'd be spending my nights in brooke's bedroom floor without my husband to share all this with, begging him to let me keep the ring i kept buried at the bottom of a guitar case for god knows how long. definitely for too long.  ❜ the sting of regret was plastered all over her features, which is why haley lowered her gaze as she reached for the point she was trying to make, ❛   i guess i'm just tired of everything changing so fast and feeling like i can't do anything to stop it, and watching a clock tick down to a new page of the calendar isn't exactly the best way i can think of to get past it.  ❜

new year’s / new year’s eve starters

“Oh, is that where it is? I was wondering why it was so quiet out here,” he joked softly with a smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. He motioned over to the railing he was leaning up against so hopefully she could join him. “Parties can be a bit much for me sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I like catching up with everybody but it’s good to come up for air every now and then, maybe see something different.” He stayed silent for a little moment allowing the thought to breathe before he turned over to her. “How about you?”

❛   ha ha, very funny, i can see why lucas likes you — you got the same dry, blunt, irredeamably broody sense of humor he does. i, for one, as his life long best friend, am still deciding if that's a good or a bad thing.  ❜ the warm, fuzzy bubbles of champagne roaming her belly were doing the conversation's comedic, heavy-lifting for her, so tipsy haley was one to talk, specially as she approached the edge of the roof to bask in the view of an illuminated t.ree hill, incoming to a new year whether it liked it or not. but just because the world started anew tonight didn't mean the town did — nothing ever changed around here anyway, not really. for people like her and lucas and karen, and apparently jake, it was underdogs' groundhog day every day. this echoing thought perfectly attuned her to her friend's quiet reflection, gaze lost in the glimmering lights before settling back on his kind features, ❛   yeah, you probably had already noticed, but i'm not the biggest crowd person, either. if i hadn't found you up here, i would've most definitely proceeded to hide out in this exact spot and played a round of solo-mini golf until lucas had come running to get me one minute before the countdown. but i guess, since we're both already here, i could share my little hiding spot with you and grant you the once-in-a-lifetime chance of haley j.ames, resident straight-a goodie two-shoes, stumble from one bogey to another using the club as a walking stick in a game of nine-holes — what do you say, ja.gielski? would that count as seeing something different?  ❜
