Thinking about how in 3x14 Addison calling Meredith’s mom a black hole. Remembering thinking what an oddly specific but quick off the tongue remark for Addison to make on someone she has no background context on other than her medical condition (which is temporarily out the window bc she’s lucid) and I’m guessing context titbits round the hospital, but here, all she gets is the last few beats of Derek’s conversation with her. Addison doesn’t necessarily hear what she says, just steps in as Derek raises his voice. She’s prioritising Derek’s feelings at the moment and it makes the comment wholly unnecessary bc he’s not even listening and she swiftly moves onto telling him not to give up, not to break down when there’s still a chance etc, so why even say it?
Because it’s not just an assuring kind word, it’s her voicing an opinion and it’s her hitting the nail on its damn head. She’s stating it, and quick enough for her to move on to consoling Derek.
It is a fact in Addison Montgomery’s mind that her and Meredith have similar parents this early on the show and it sickens me to my core they never properly acknowledge this commonality. She knows what it’s like to grow up under vapid, soul sucking supervisions so much that she doesn’t even need to think about it before calling it. She is THINKING this about Meredith’s mother has pieced it together about Meredith’s mother and that kills me.
They let Meredith talk about mother issues to Christina, to Derek, even to George and Izzie but the one woman who could understand what it’s like to feel your whole life like a little girl standing in front of a mother who looks the other way as you cry? Addison.
