Whilst learning anything there are many different aspects of our behaviour we could work on in order to improve what we take in. That could range from taking more notes to extra reading or listening better to asking the right questions. What I would like to discuss today however is attention. This is an aspect of people’s behavioural spectrum and cognitive processing that is not discussed as much with regards to learning, unless in the area of attention deficit disorders. However, what is interesting is your attention is absolutely critical to what you as individual take in when learning.

We recently wrote about people’s ability to pay attention when learning . It is important to understand how you pay attention and how your focus is whilst you are learning. By knowing this we can work on improving it. There are many different things you can do to maximise your ability in keeping your attention on tasks whilst you are learning. Here are a list of 8 different possible things you can do in order to get the most your of your attention.

In the modern classroom, chalky revolving blackboards and wooden canes are thankfully things of the past. This evolution in education is not only thanks to the impact of technological advancements and changing social norms (it’s hard to imagine a day when whacking a child across the hands with a wooden ruler was perfectly acceptable practice), but also thanks to scientific research into the way our brains work which has made the way we teach much more effective than it used to be.
