Stuttering Through

I love the glass house idea, but I'm also wary of having such an on-display house. But dRMM has solved that problem with creating this sliding shell over the glass house. 

Natural light is extremely important in architecture. How little or how much depends on the mood that the designer wants. And there have been studies on how natural light affects productivity and growth on humans everywhere. Thus creating artificial natural light in places where there is none is awesome. It would be able to help people who suffer from SAD, or even in northern countries where they spend months in complete darkness.

Bob Snead I've been a big fan of The Art Assignment on youtube since it's launched. The newest video featuring Bob Snead is one that I really like. He seems to approach art and the process of it with a humorous lens, and this video brings up some good points regarding the authenticity of art when it isn't made by the actual artist. Which then reminded me of Ai Wei Wei because most of his travelling works and pieces created currently have to be made by others. And I really like the approach and attitude that Snead has with his art. On his website in his statement he mentions a community based art process rather than focusing on the artist.

Chloe Rutzerveldt is a food designer that studied industrial design at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. She focuses a lot of her work in food. What I like about this project is that she integrates technology into food, much like Ferran Andria did as well. The molecular gastronomy movement has been in full swing these couple years in the food world, and Rutzerveldt is bringing back the organic aspect of molecular gastronomy. Her edibles look organic and IS organic. While other chefs use molecular gastronomy to deconstruct foods to rearrange them back into their organic states, there's something that doesn't sit well with me in that process. It's kind of like lying to the consumer about the product. But Rutzerveldt's project doesn't have that aspect. It's not rearranging the food, its about growing it and letting it be.

I don't know what it is about Eames that I like so much; it could be the work ethic they had, or the creative child like way they saw life through, or the diverse work they did, but whatever it is, it is what I want to do for the rest of my life. When looking at the Eames office, it also reminds me so much of my own apartment and my roommates. The Eames office is filled with clutter and various objects of inspiration or to pass time. In my apartment, we have objects we've created on display everywhere and a lot of toys that we've collected to play with when we're bored. I've always tried to surround myself with creative work and objects I've found, but moving out into my apartment it was intensified as my roommates also did the same. When people came over, they mostly saw it all as clutter, but we saw it as part of us. And looking at the Eames office, I can see that they were the same way. 

What I really like about Tran's work is that a lot of his pieces look realistic and organic when most origami looks geometric. It is clear  he puts a lot of time and effort into his craft and I appreciate it, especially when origami can be seen as a "childish" art. 

What I really like about Elkebana, besides for the pun, is that they didn't invent something new, they simply reimagined and redesigned a vase into something more fun. 

Michael Paul Smith is what I aspire to be, an artist that works with their hands in multiple fields. He's worked as an architect model maker and a display artist for retail stores and museums. The detail in these little sets are amazing and I can only imagine the many hour's he's poured into them.

So in response to the photographs of the Quantam Physics' chalkboards being sold, I have none. There's nothing wrong with making money off art because everyone needs to eat. But once you abandon the spirit of the art, I'm looking at you George Lucas, that's wrong.

What I really enjoy about this collaboration is that it shows off Deepblue's creative prowess. It's informative, fun, and it falls in line with the firm's creative principles. It even looks like an app game, which falls right in line with the firm's own motto of "IDEAS. LOVE. TECHNOLOGY."

Another surprise was her frequent collaboration with pop-artists, like Jay-Z and Lady Gaga. Too often do people dismiss pop-artists as shallow. In actuality, those dissidents are the shallow ones. Many musical artists are very often more intelligent and business saavy than the public. And they have to be in order to maintain a public face. The surprise for me was this reminder as I realized both Lady Gaga and Jay-Z probably knew of Abramovic and her work in order to collaborate with her. And I appreciate that; as Abramovic has already mentioned, by having these famous pop-artists to collaborate with her, they also promote their own work as well as encourage the public to learn more.

Glass House is a peformance art piece by Tom Fruin, a Brooklyn based artist. He is known for this and a similar piece he did in Brooklyn with an old watertower. The Glass House performance has two actors in it that perform daily activities in exaggerated drama for the public. Both the Glass House and the watertower play with color, like the artists in assume vivid astro did, but he also incorporates light in his pieces. The translucent quality of the glass in the Glass House allow for stretched colors to move across the ground, especially during dawn and dusk. This piece also reminds me of Marina Abramovic's own piece where she lives in a space she created for days.

Continuing with Buckminster Fuller’s principles of design, John Kriegshauser is a Chicago designer that created a chair based on Buckminster Fuller’s principles of limited materials to create a strong structure. I never really expected to see Fuller’s principles to be so inherent in contemporary architecture and design. For example, just last week in my architecture and ecology class, Fuller was again mentioned as a notable figure in sustainable design. Which make sense with his principles of creating structures with lightweight materials that are ephemeral. His dymaxion house was an example of creating a eco-friendly house. It was built offsite and flown in by helicopters and was meant to be easily disassembled. When looking at Kriegshauser’s chair, it is clear that Fuller’s lightweight materials and ephemeralism principles were utilized in the design process.

Thus looking at Goldsworthy's work, it is truly done in Fuller's own theories. It utilizes only one or two materials that support each other. While Lee's own work is stunning, he cheats a bit.

Going back to rent day, Nora tells me that Toni had decided to go make her living by making glass top coffee tables. A normal person’s response would be to laugh and dismiss. I had no doubts she would. (During our senior year of high school, Toni had shown me her lofted drafting table she was building by herself.) And lo and behold when I entered my room there lay against the walls were at least ten panes of glass rectangles. Of course the rest of the room was a mess. (I was slightly glad I was not living here during her impulse to move everything out of her temporary workshop.) And Toni has always been that way. Once she has her mind set on making something, she does it. Though she is a mechanical engineer major, she does fantastic pottery, paintings, poetry, and other various arts and craft projects. Shes constantly making something and learning new things to incorporate into her projects. She reminds me so much of what Black Mountain College had, cross disciplinary individuals who were open to learning new things. I haven't talked to her recently because she's been busy with classes, but we have decided to start our project that we have always wanted to do. Building a Eames musical tower.
